Revival of Zeolite-Templated Nanocarbon Materials: Recent Advances in Energy Storage and Conversion

Nanocarbon materials represent one of the hottest topics in physics, chemistry, and materials science. Preparation of nanocarbon materials by zeolite templates has been developing for more than 20 years. In recent years, novel structures and properties of zeolite-templated nanocarbons have been evolving and new applications are emerging in the realm of energy storage and conversion. Here, recent progress of zeolite-templated nanocarbons in advanced synthetic techniques, emerging properties, and novel applications is summarized: i) thanks to the diversity of zeolites, the structures of the corresponding nanocarbons are multitudinous; ii) by various synthetic techniques, novel properties of zeolite-templated nanocarbons can be achieved, such as hierarchical porosity, heteroatom doping, and nanoparticle loading capacity; iii) the applications of zeolite-templated nanocarbons are also evolving from traditional gas/vapor adsorption to advanced energy storage techniques including Li-ion batteries, Li-S batteries, fuel cells, metal-O2 batteries, etc. Finally, a perspective is provided to forecast the future development of zeolite-templated nanocarbon materials.

P84/ZCC Hollow Fiber Mixed Matrix Membrane with PDMS Coating to Enhance Air Separation Performance

This research introduces zeolite carbon composite (ZCC) as a new filler on polymeric membranes based on the BTDA-TDI/MDI (P84) co-polyimide for the air separation process. The separation performance was further improved by a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating to cover up the surface defect. The incorporation of 1 wt% ZCC into P84 co-polyimide matrix enhanced the O2 permeability from 7.12 to 18.90 Barrer (2.65 times) and the O2/N2 selectivity from 4.11 to 4.92 Barrer (19.71% improvement). The PDMS coating on the membrane further improved the O2/N2 selectivity by up to 60%. The results showed that the incorporation of ZCC and PDMS coating onto the P84 co-polyimide membrane was able to increase the overall air separation performance.

Zeolite-templated carbons - three-dimensional microporous graphene frameworks

Zeolite-templated carbons (ZTCs) are ordered microporous carbons synthesized by using zeolite as a sacrificial template. Unlike well-known ordered mesoporous carbons obtained by using mesoporous silica templates, ZTCs consist of curved and single-layer graphene frameworks, thereby affording uniform micropore size (ca. 1.2 nm), developed microporosity (∼1.7 cm3 g-1), very high surface area (∼4000 m2 g-1), good compatibility with chemical modification, and remarkable softness/elasticity. Thus, ZTCs have been used in many applications such as hydrogen storage, methane storage, CO2 capture, liquid-phase adsorption, catalysts, electrochemical capacitors, batteries, and fuel cells. Herein, the relevant research studies are summarized, and the properties as well as the performances of ZTCs are compared with those of other materials including metal-organic frameworks, to elucidate the intrinsic advantages of ZTCs and their future development.

Adsorption–desorption of CO2 on zeolite-Y-templated carbon at various temperatures

This study aims to investigate the adsorption–desorption of CO₂ on a micro-mesoporous zeolite-Y-templated carbon (ZTC) at various temperatures. ZTC was synthesized via sucrose impregnation, carbonization, and template removal. The adsorption–desorption of CO₂ on ZTC was performed using the gravimetric method. Results showed that the CO₂ adsorption capacity was 9.51 wt%, 5.60 wt%, and 3.47 wt%, and desorbed up to 59.83%, 69.70%, 77.5% for temperatures of 30 °C, 40 °C, and 50 °C, respectively. The adsorption process of CO₂ at temperatures of 30 °C and 40 °C follow the pseudo-second order, while at 50 °C follows intra-particle diffusion. The thermodynamic analyses indicate that the adsorption was due to physisorption.

A micro-mesoporous structure of ZTC was synthesized via an impregnation method, and the structure assisted in a faster CO₂ adsorption–desorption equilibrium.

Influence of doping nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus on activated carbons for gas adsorption of H2, CH4 and CO2

Heteroatoms doped porous carbons were synthesized with different acids as catalysts and heteroatoms source. Heteroatoms doping enhances gas adsorption capacity.

Large surface area ordered porous carbons via nanocasting zeolite 10X and high performance for hydrogen storage application

We report the preparation of ordered porous carbons for the first time via nanocasting zeolite 10X with an aim to evaluate their potential application for hydrogen storage. The synthesized carbons exhibit large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas in the 1300-3331 m(2)/g range and pore volumes up to 1.94 cm(3)/g with a pore size centered at 1.2 nm. The effects of different synthesis processes with pyrolysis temperature varied in the 600-800 °C range on the surface areas, and pore structures of carbons were explored. During the carbonization process, carbons derived from the liquid-gas two-step routes at around 700 °C are nongraphitic and retain the particle morphology of 10X zeolite, whereas the higher pyrolysis temperature results in some graphitic domains and hollow-shell morphologies. In contrast, carbons derived from the direct acetylene infiltration process have some incident nanoribbon or nanofiber morphologies. A considerable hydrogen storage capacity of 6.1 wt % at 77 K and 20 bar was attained for the carbon with the surface area up to 3331 m(2)/g, one of the top-ranked capacities ever observed for large surface area adsorbents, demonstrating their potential uses for compacting gaseous fuels of hydrogen. The hydrogen capacity is comparable to those of previously reported values on other kinds of carbon-based materials and highly dependent on the surface area and micropore volume of carbons related to the optimum pore size, therefore providing guidance for the further search of nanoporous materials for hydrogen storage.
