A Review of Oxygen Carrier Materials and Related Thermochemical Redox Processes for Concentrating Solar Thermal Applications

Redox materials have been investigated for various thermochemical processing applications including solar fuel production (hydrogen, syngas), ammonia synthesis, thermochemical energy storage, and air separation/oxygen pumping, while involving concentrated solar energy as the high-temperature process heat source for solid-gas reactions. Accordingly, these materials can be processed in two-step redox cycles for thermochemical fuel production from H₂O and CO₂ splitting. In such cycles, the metal oxide is first thermally reduced when heated under concentrated solar energy. Then, the reduced material is re-oxidized with either H₂O or CO₂ to produce H₂ or CO. The mixture forms syngas that can be used for the synthesis of various hydrocarbon fuels. An alternative process involves redox systems of metal oxides/nitrides for ammonia synthesis from N₂ and H₂O based on chemical looping cycles. A metal nitride reacts with steam to form ammonia and the corresponding metal oxide. The latter is then recycled in a nitridation reaction with N₂ and a reducer. In another process, redox systems can be processed in reversible endothermal/exothermal reactions for solar thermochemical energy storage at high temperature. The reduction corresponds to the heat charge while the reverse oxidation with air leads to the heat discharge for supplying process heat to a downstream process. Similar reversible redox reactions can finally be used for oxygen separation from air, which results in separate flows of O₂ and N₂ that can be both valorized, or thermochemical oxygen pumping to absorb residual oxygen. This review deals with the different redox materials involving stoichiometric or non-stoichiometric materials applied to solar fuel production (H₂, syngas, ammonia), thermochemical energy storage, and thermochemical air separation or gas purification. The most relevant chemical looping reactions and the best performing materials acting as the oxygen carriers are identified and described, as well as the chemical reactors suitable for solar energy absorption, conversion, and storage.

Thermal Swing Reduction-Oxidation of Me(Ba, Ca, or Mg)SrCoCu Perovskites for Oxygen Separation from Air

The climate change impact associated with greenhouse gas emissions is a major global concern. This work investigates perovskite compounds for oxygen separation from air to supply oxygen to oxyfuel energy systems to abate these significant environmental impacts. The perovskites studied were Me0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (MeSCC) where the A-site substitution was carried out by four different cations (Me = Ca, Mg, Sr, or Ba). SEM analysis showed the formation of small particle (<1 µm) aggregates with varying morphological features. XRD analysis confirmed that all compounds were perovskites with a hexagonal phase. Under reduction and oxidation reactions (redox), Ba and Ca substitutions resulted in the highest and lowest oxygen release, respectively. In terms of real application for oxygen separation from air, Ba substitution as BaSCC proved to be preferable due to short temperature cycles for the uptake and release of oxygen of 134 °C, contrary to Ca substitution with long and undesirable temperature cycles of 237 °C. As a result, a small air separation unit of 0.66 m3, containing 1000 kg of BaSCC, can produce 18.5 ton y−1 of pure oxygen by using a conservative heating rate of 1 °C min−1. By increasing the heating rate by a further 1 °C min−1, the oxygen production almost doubled by 16.7 ton y−1. These results strongly suggest the major advantages of short thermal cycles as novel designs for air separation. BaSCC was stable under 22 thermal cycles, and coupled with oxygen production, demonstrates the potential of this technology for oxyfuel energy systems to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Dopant-Site Determination in Y- and Sc-Doped (Ba0.5Sr0.5)(Co0.8Fe0.2)O3-δ by Atom Location by Channeling Enhanced Microanalysis and the Role of Dopant Site on Secondary Phase Formation

(Ba0.5Sr0.5)(Co0.8Fe0.2)O3-δ (BSCF) is a promising material with mixed ionic and electronic conductivity which is considered for oxygen separation membranes. Selective improvement of material properties, e.g. oxygen diffusivity or suppression of secondary phase formation, can be achieved by B-site doping. This study is concerned with the formation of Co-oxide precipitates in undoped BSCF at typical homogenization temperatures of 1,000°C, which act as undesirable nucleation sites for other secondary phases in the application-relevant temperature range. Y-doping successfully suppresses Co-oxide formation, whereas only minor improvements are achieved by Sc-doping. To understand the reason for the different behavior of Y and Sc, the lattice sites of dopant cations in BSCF were experimentally determined in this work. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope was applied to locate dopant sites exploiting the atom location by channeling enhanced microanalysis technique. It is shown that Sc exclusively occupies B-cation sites, whereas Y is detected on A- and B-cation sites in Y-doped BSCF, although solely B-site doping was intended. A model is presented for the suppression of Co-oxide formation in Y-doped BSCF based on Y double-site occupancy.

Nanoparticles at Grain Boundaries Inhibit the Phase Transformation of Perovskite Membrane

The high-energy nature of grain boundaries makes them a common source of undesirable phase transformations in polycrystalline materials. In both metals and ceramics, such grain-boundary-induced phase transformation can be a frequent cause of performance degradation. Here, we identify a new stabilization mechanism that involves inhibiting phase transformations of perovskite materials by deliberately introducing nanoparticles at the grain boundaries. The nanoparticles act as "roadblocks" that limit the diffusion of metal ions along the grain boundaries and inhibit heterogeneous nucleation and new phase formation. Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ, a high-performance oxygen permeation and fuel cell cathode material whose commercial application has so far been impeded by phase instability, is used as an example to illustrate the inhibition action of nanoparticles toward the phase transformation. We obtain stable oxygen permeation flux at 600 °C with an unprecedented 10-1000 times increase in performance compared to previous investigations. This grain boundary stabilization method could potentially be extended to other systems that suffer from performance degradation due to a grain-boundary-initiated heterogeneous nucleation phase transformations.

Fast mapping of the cobalt-valence state in Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-d by electron energy loss spectroscopy

A fast method for determination of the Co-valence state by electron energy loss spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope is presented. We suggest the distance between the Co-L3 and Co-L2 white-lines as a reliable property for the determination of Co-valence states between 2+ and 3+. The determination of the Co-L2,3 white-line distance can be automated and is therefore well suited for the evaluation of large data sets that are collected for line scans and mappings. Data with a low signal-to-noise due to short acquisition times can be processed by applying principal component analysis. The new technique was applied to study the Co-valence state of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-d (BSCF), which is hampered by the superposition of the Ba-M4,5 white-lines on the Co-L2,3 white-lines. The Co-valence state of the cubic BSCF phase was determined to be 2.2+ (±0.2) after annealing for 100 h at 650°C, compared to an increased valence state of 2.8+ (±0.2) for the hexagonal phase. These results support models that correlate the instability of the cubic BSCF phase with an increased Co-valence state at temperatures below 840°C.
