High throughput catalytic dechlorination of TCE by hollow fiber nanocomposite membranes with embedded Pd and Pd-Au catalysts

Efficient hydrogenation of p-chlorophenol and Cr(VI) driven by hydrogen rich balls over Pd/C catalysts

Catalytic hydrogenation can selectively destabilize and detoxify specific contaminants in water. Herein, to explore safer and more efficient hydrogen sources, hydrogen rich balls (HRBs) were researched and applied for hydrogenating p-chlorophenol and Cr(VI) over Pd/C catalyst. The results showed that HRBs can realize the sustained release of H₂ by replacing the hydrogen in water, and generate the refined (micro/nano-sized) H₂ bubble, which effectively improves the adsorption and activation effectively of H₂ molecules on Pd/C catalyst, and the hydrogen atoms utilization efficiency during p-chlorophenol hydrodechlorination is as high as 3.5 %. Continuous flow experiments showed that rapid removal of p-chlorophenol with different concentrations could be achieved by adjusting the flow rate. Moreover, the high-toxic Cr(VI) was successfully reduced to the low-toxic Cr(III) in an appropriate pH range. This research is of far-reaching significance for realizing the detoxification of environmental pollutants and promoting the development of hydrogen economy.

Designing of a novel polyvinylidene fluoride/TiO2/UiO-66-NH2 membrane with photocatalytic antifouling properties using modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework

Novel polyvinylidene fluoride/TiO₂/UiO-66-NH₂ (PVDF/TiUN) membranes were produced by the delay phase separation method via introducing the TiO₂/UiO-66-NH₂ (TiUN) nanocomposite into PVDF casting solution. Interconnection of TiO₂ and UiO-66-NH₂ improved photocatalysis capacity and endowed PVDF/TiUN membranes with self-cleaning capability. Quantitative measurements showed that, firstly, PVDF/TiUN membranes exhibited improved photodegradation kinetics and efficiency (up to 88.1%) to Rhodamine B (RhB). Secondly, the performances of bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and permeation of PVDF/TiUN membranes outperformed those of other check samples, indicating enhanced hydrophilicity. Thirdly, rejection rate of BSA reached a breathtaking 98.14% and flux recovery ratio (FRR) of BSA reached a breathtaking 95.37%. Thus, given their excellent anti-contamination property and separation performance, the PVDF/TiUN membrane is very likely to be a novel water treatment membrane.

Liquid-phase hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene driven by nascent H2 under an open system: Hydrogenation activity, solvent effect and sulfur poisoning

Hydrodechlorination is a promising technology for the remediation of water body contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE). In this work, the liquid-phase hydrogenation of TCE by Raney Ni (R-Ni) and Pd/C under an open system have been studied, in which nascent H₂ (Nas-H₂) generated in situ from the cathode acted as a hydrogen source. Experimental results showed that TCE was completely eliminate from the solution through the synergistic effects of hydrodechlorination and air flotation due to the formation of continuous micro/nano-sized Nas-H₂ bubbles from the cathode. Furthermore, the effects of inorganic anions and organic solvents on R-Ni and Pd/C hydrogenation activity were investigated, respectively. The results showed that NO₃^- and acetonitrile can form a competitive reaction with TCE; Sulfur with lone-pair electrons will cause irreversible poisoning to these two catalysts, and have a stronger inhibitory effect on Pd/C. This work helps to realize the separation of volatile halogenated compounds from water environment and provides certain data support for the choice of catalyst in the actual liquid-phase hydrogenation system.

Halloysite nanotube blended nanocomposite ultrafiltration membranes for reactive dye removal

In this paper, ultrafiltration (UF) flat sheet membranes were manufactured by introducing two diverse halloysite nanotubes (HNT) size (5 μm and 63 μm) and five different (0, 0.63, 1.88, 3.13, 6.30 wt %) ratios by wet phase inversion. Some characterization methods which are contact angle, zeta potential, viscosity, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Young's modulus measurements were used for ultrafiltration membranes. Synthetic dye waters which were Setazol Red and Reactive Orange were used for filtration performance tests. These dye solutions were filtered in three different pH conditions and three different temperature conditions for pH and temperature resistance to understand how flux and removal efficiency change. The best water permeability results were obtained as 190.5 LMH and 192 LMH, for halloysite nanotubes (HNT) sizes of 5 μm and 63 μm respectively. The best water and dye performance of UF membrane contains 1.88% w/w ratio of HNT, which showed increased water flux and dye flux of membranes according to different HNT concentrations including ultrafiltration membranes.

Molten hydroxide for detoxification of chlorine-containing waste: Unraveling chlorine retention efficiency and chlorine salt enrichment

Hazardous waste dechlorination reduces the potential of creating dioxins during the incineration process. To investigate the salt effect on waste dechlorination, molten hydroxides with a low melting temperature were utilized for the pre-dechlorination and decomposition of chlorine-containing organic wastes (COWs) including trichlorobenzene (TCB), perchloroethylene, hexachlorobenzene and chlordane. The results showed that a eutectic mixture of caustic sodium and potassium hydroxides (41 wt.% NaOH and 59 wt.% KOH) led to a low melting point below 300°C and a relatively high chlorine retention efficiency (CRE) with TCB as a representative COWs. The amounts of hydroxides, reaction time, and temperature all had notable influence on CRE. When the mass ratio of hydroxides to TCB reached 30:1, approximately 98.1% of the TCB was destroyed within 2.5 hr at 300°C with CRE of 71.6%. According to the residue analysis, the shapes of reaction residues were irregular with particles becoming swollen and porous. The benzene ring and C-Cl bonds disappeared, while carboxyl groups formed in the residues. The stripped chlorine was retained and condensed to form chloride salts, and the relative abundance of the chloride ions associated with the mass of TCB in residues increased from 0 to 75.0% within the 2.5 hr reaction time. The observed concentration of dioxins in residues was 5.6 ngTEQ/kg. A reaction pathway and possible additional reactions that occur in this dechlorination system were proposed. Oxidizing agents may attack TCB and facilitate hydrogenation/dechlorination reactions, making this process a promising and environmentally friendly approach for chlorine-containing organic waste treatment.

Effect of polymer type on characterization and filtration performances of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)-COOH-based polymeric mixed matrix membranes

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) can be used for the fabrication of mixed matrix polymeric membranes that can enhance filtration perfomances of the membranes by modifying membrane surface properties. In this study, detailed characterization and filtration performances of MWCNTs functionalized with COOH group, blended into polymeric flat-sheet membranes were investigated using different polymer types. Morphological characterization was carried out using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements. For filtration performance tests, protein, dextran, E. coli suspension, Xanthan Gum and real activated sludge solutions were used. Experimental data and analyses revealed that Polyethersulfone (PES) + MWCNT-COOH mixed matrix membranes have superior performance abilities compared to other tested membranes.
