Treatment of volatile organic compounds and other waste gases using membrane biofilm reactors: A review on recent advancements and challenges

This article provides a comprehensive review of membrane biofilm reactors for waste gas (MBRWG) treatment, focusing on studies conducted since 2000. The first section discusses the membrane materials, structure, and mass transfer mechanism employed in MBRWG. The concept of a partial counter-diffusion biofilm in MBRWG is introduced, with identification of the most metabolically active region. Subsequently, the effectiveness of these biofilm reactors in treating single and mixed pollutants is examined. The phenomenon of membrane fouling in MBRWG is characterized, alongside an analysis of contributory factors. Furthermore, a comparison is made between membrane biofilm reactors and conventional biological treatment technologies, highlighting their respective advantages and disadvantages. It is evident that the treatment of hydrophobic gases and their resistance to volatility warrant further investigation. In addition, the emergence of the smart industry and its integration with other processes have opened up new opportunities for the utilization of MBRWG. Overcoming membrane fouling and developing stable and cost-effective membrane materials are essential factors for successful engineering applications of MBRWG. Moreover, it is worth exploring the mechanisms of co-metabolism in MBRWG and the potential for altering biofilm community structures.

Comparing Hydrogen Sulfide Removal Efficiency in a Field-Scale Digester Using Microaeration and Iron Filters

Biological desulfurization of biogas from a field-scale anaerobic digester in Peru was tested using air injection (microaeration) in separate duplicate vessels and chemical desulfurization using duplicate iron filters to compare hydrogen sulfide (H2S) reduction, feasibility, and cost. Microaeration was tested after biogas retention times of 2 and 4 h after a single injection of ambient air at 2 L/min. The microaeration vessels contained digester sludge to seed sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and facilitate H2S removal. The average H2S removal efficiency using iron filters was 32.91%, with a maximum of 70.21%. The average H2S removal efficiency by iron filters was significantly lower than microaeration after 2 and 4 h retention times (91.5% and 99.8%, respectively). The longer retention time (4 h) resulted in a higher average removal efficiency (99.8%) compared to 2 h (91.5%). The sulfur concentration in the microaeration treatment vessel was 493% higher after 50 days of treatments, indicating that the bacterial community present in the liquid phase of the vessels effectively sequestered the sulfur compounds from the biogas. The H2S removal cost for microaeration (2 h: $29/m3 H2S removed; and 4 h: $27/m3 H2S removed) was an order of magnitude lower than for the iron filter ($382/m3 H2S removed). In the small-scale anaerobic digestion system in Peru, microaeration was more efficient and cost effective for desulfurizing the biogas than the use of iron filters.

Micro-Oxygenation in Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) Reactors Using a Silicon Membrane for Sulfide Oxidation

Sulfide produced by sulphate-reducing bacteria in anaerobic reactors can seriously affect biogas quality. Microaeration has become a reliable way to remove sulfide, by promoting its oxidation. However, limited research is available regarding its application in upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors. In this research, silicon membranes were studied as a mechanism to dose oxygen in USAB reactors. Two configurations were tested: the membrane placed inside the reactor or in an external module. Our results show that the external membrane proved to be a more practical alternative, providing conditions for sulfide oxidation. This led to a reduction in its concentration in the liquid effluent and biogas. External membrane configuration achieved a sulfide conversion rate of 2.4 g-S m² d⁻¹. Since the membrane was not sulfide-selective, methane losses were observed (about 9%). In addition, excessive oxygen consumption was observed, compared to the stoichiometric requirement. As is the case for many membrane-based systems, membrane area is a key factor determining the correct operation of the system.
