Process Simulation and Optimization on Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising alternative compounds that enable the development of technologies based on their unique properties as solvents or catalysts. These technologies require integrated product and process designs to select ILs with optimal process performances at an industrial scale to promote cost-effective and sustainable technologies. The digital era and multiscale research methodologies have changed the paradigm from experiment-oriented to hybrid experimental-computational developments guided by process engineering. This Review summarizes the relevant contributions (>300 research papers) of process simulations to advance IL-based technology developments by guiding experimental research efforts and enhancing industrial transferability. Robust simulation methodologies, mostly based on predictive COSMO-SAC/RS and UNIFAC models in Aspen Plus software, were applied to analyze key IL applications: physical and chemical CO2 capture, CO2 conversion, gas separation, liquid-liquid extraction, extractive distillation, refrigeration cycles, and biorefinery. The contributions concern the IL selection criteria, operational unit design, equipment sizing, technoeconomic and environmental analyses, and process optimization to promote the competitiveness of the proposed IL-based technologies. Process simulation revealed that multiscale research strategies enable advancement in the technological development of IL applications by focusing research efforts to overcome the limitations and exploit the excellent properties of ILs.

Comprehensive evaluation of an ionic liquid based deep purification process for NH3-containing industrial gas

Ammonia (NH3) emission has caused serious environment issues and aroused worldwide concern. The emerging ionic liquid (IL) provides a greener way to efficiently capture NH3. This paper provides rigorous process simulation, optimization and assessment for a novel NH3 deep purification process using IL. The process was designed and investigated by simulation and optimization using ionic liquid [C4im][NTF2] as absorbent. Three objective functions, total purification cost (TPC), total process CO2 emission (TPCOE) and thermal efficiency (ηeff) were employed to optimize the absorption process. Process simulation and optimization results indicate that at same purification standard and recovery rate, the novel process can achieve lower cost and CO2 emission compared to benchmark process. After process optimization, the optimal functions can achieve 0.02726 $/Nm3 (TPC), 311.27 kg CO2/hr (TPCOE), and 52.21% (ηeff) for enhanced process. Moreover, compared with conventional process, novel process could decrease over $ 3 million of purification cost and 10000 tons of CO2 emission during the life cycle. The results provide a novel strategy and guidance for deep purification of NH3 capture.

Condensable Gases Capture with Ionic Liquids

Condensable gases are the sum of condensable and volatile steam or organic compounds, including water vapor, which are discharged into the atmosphere in gaseous form at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Condensable toxic and harmful gases emitted from petrochemical, chemical, packaging and printing, industrial coatings, and mineral mining activities seriously pollute the atmospheric environment and endanger human health. Meanwhile, these gases are necessary chemical raw materials; therefore, developing green and efficient capture technology is significant for efficiently utilizing condensed gas resources. To overcome the problems of pollution and corrosion existing in traditional organic solvent and alkali absorption methods, ionic liquids (ILs), known as "liquid molecular sieves", have received unprecedented attention thanks to their excellent separation and regeneration performance and have gradually become green solvents used by scholars to replace traditional absorbents. This work reviews the research progress of ILs in separating condensate gas. As the basis of chemical engineering, this review first provides a detailed discussion of the origin of predictive molecular thermodynamics and its broad application in theory and industry. Afterward, this review focuses on the latest research results of ILs in the capture of several important typical condensable gases, including water vapor, aromatic VOCs (i.e., BTEX), chlorinated VOC, fluorinated refrigerant gas, low-carbon alcohols, ketones, ethers, ester vapors, etc. Using pure IL, mixed ILs, and IL + organic solvent mixtures as absorbents also briefly expanded the related reports of porous materials loaded with an IL as adsorbents. Finally, future development and research directions in this exciting field are remarked.

Effective Absorption of Dichloromethane Using Carboxyl-Functionalized Ionic Liquids

Dichloromethane (DCM) is recognized as a very harmful air pollutant because of its strong volatility and difficulty to degrade. Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as potential solvents for absorbing DCM, while it is still a challenge to develop ILs with high absorption performances. In this study, four carboxyl-functionalized ILs-trioctylmethylammonium acetate [N₁₈₈₈][Ac], trioctylmethylammonium formate [N₁₈₈₈][FA], trioctylmethylammonium glycinate [N₁₈₈₈][Gly], and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium glycinate [P₆₆₆₁₄][Gly]-were synthesized for DCM capture. The absorption capacity follows the order of [P₆₆₆₁₄][Gly] > [N₁₈₈₈][Gly] > [N₁₈₈₈][FA] > [N₁₈₈₈][Ac], and [P₆₆₆₁₄][Gly] showed the best absorption capacity, 130 mg DCM/g IL at 313.15 K and a DCM concentration of 6.1%, which was two times higher than the reported ILs [Beim][EtSO₄] and [Emim][Ac]. Moreover, the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of the DCM + IL binary system was experimentally measured. The NRTL (non-random two-liquid) model was developed to predict the VLE data, and a relative root mean square deviation (rRMSD) of 0.8467 was obtained. The absorption mechanism was explored via FT-IR spectra, ¹H-NMR, and quantum chemistry calculations. It showed a nonpolar affinity between the cation and the DCM, while the interaction between the anion and the DCM was a hydrogen bond. Based on the results of the study of the interaction energy, it was found that the hydrogen bond between the anion and the DCM had the greatest influence on the absorption process.

Screening ionic liquids for efficiently extracting perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFACs) from wastewater

Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) using ionic liquids (ILs)-based methods to remove perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFACs), such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), from wastewater, is an important strategy. However, the lack of physicochemical and LLE data limits the selection of the most suitable ILs for the extraction of PFACs. In this work, 1763 ILs for PFACs extraction from water were systematically screened using COSMOtherm to estimate the infinite dilution activity coefficient (lnγ^∞)of PFOA and PFOS in water and ILs. To evaluate the accuracy of COSMOtherm, 8 ILs with various lnγ^∞ values were selected, and their extraction efficiency (E) and distribution coefficient (D_exp) were measured experimentally. The results showed that the predicted lnγ^∞ decreased as the increase of experimental extraction efficiency of PFOA or PFOS, while the tendency of predicted distribution coefficient (D_pre) was consistent with the experimental (D_exp) results. This work provides an efficient basis for selecting ILs for the extraction of PFACs from wastewater.

VOCs absorption from gas streams using deep eutectic solvents - A review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most severe atmospheric pollutants. They are mainly emitted into the atmosphere from anthropogenic sources such as automobile exhaust, incomplete fuel combustion, and various industrial processes. VOCs not only cause hazards to human health or the environment but also adversely affect industrial installation components due to their specific properties, i.e., corrosive and reactivity. Therefore, much attention is being paid to developing new methods for capturing VOCs from gaseous streams, i.e., air, process streams, waste streams, or gaseous fuels. Among the available technologies, absorption based on deep eutectic solvents (DES) is widely studied as a green alternative to other commercial processes. This literature review presents a critical summary of the achievements in capturing individual VOCs using DES. The types of used DES and their physicochemical properties affecting absorption efficiency, available methods for evaluating the effectiveness of new technologies, and the possibility of regeneration of DES are described. In addition, critical comments on the new gas purification methods and future perspectives are included.

Effective absorption of dichloromethane using deep eutectic solvents

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), of which dichloromethane (DCM) has become one of the main components because of its extensive use and strong volatility, are recognized as extremely hazardous and refractory pollutants in the atmosphere. The efficient treatment of DCM is of great significance to the protection of environment and human health. In this work, the strategy of DCM capture with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with different hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) was proposed and systematically investigated. The experimental results show that tetrabutylphosphonium chloride: levulinic acid ([P₄₄₄₄][Cl]-LEV) presents the most excellent DCM absorption capacity among all DESs studied and considerable capacity in [P₄₄₄₄][Cl]-LEV (1:2) with 899 mg DCM/g DES (5.58 mol DCM/mol DES) at 30 °C and DCM partial pressure of 0.3 bar can be achieved. The microscopic absorption mechanism is explored by ¹HNMR and FT-IR spectra as well as quantum chemistry calculations, indicating that the absorption is a physical process. The interaction energy analysis suggests that the greater the interaction energy between DES and DCM, the greater the saturated absorption capacity of DCM. The hydrogen bond (HB) contributes most to the weak interaction between DCM and HBA/HBD, and both HBA and HBD play an important role in the absorption of DCM.
