Investigation on the structure-performance of phthalic acid carboxyl position and carbon nitride towards efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Construction of intramolecular donor-acceptor type carbon nitride for photocatalytic hydrogen production

High-efficiency photocatalysts based on organic polymeric semiconductor are often limited by slow charge separation kinetics and sluggish redox reaction dynamics. Herein, the donor-acceptor conjugated polymeric carbon nitride (D/A-CN) was synthesized by grafting benzene ring and pyridine moiety into the backbone of CN through a flexible pyrolysis strategy. The D/A-CN shows a high photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 4795 µmol·h-1·g-1, which is ≈6.08 times higher than that of pristine CN (787.5 µmol·h-1·g-1). Both experimental and theoretical results confirm that the robust internal electric field is established in the D/A-CN framework due to the enhanced molecular dipole, which apply a kinetic force to facilitate the separation and mobility of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, the deeper conduction band potential caused by the elevated orbital energy level of D/A-CN contributes to the enhanced reduction ability of photoinduced electron. Consequently, the faster carrier transfer kinetics and the stronger thermodynamic reduction driving force synergistically lead to efficient photocatalytic H2 production of D/A-CN. This work reinforces the comprehension of the structure-performance relationship of donor-acceptor structural photocatalysts and provides an insight for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of polymeric photocatalysts at the molecular level.

Optimizing physico-chemical properties of hierarchical ZnO/TiO2 nano-film by the novel heating method for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics and dye

The design of semiconductor catalysts with excellent photocatalytic properties, stability, recyclability, and good separation for the treatment of polluted water is still challenging. In this paper, the ZnO/TiO2 nano-thin films were fabricated using the magnetron sputtering technique and then heating the underlying ZnO layer and the upper TiO2 layer for their respective optimal heating time, i. e. heating ZnO for 3 h and heating TiO2 for 2 h. The as-prepared films were characterized. The results show that the preferred growth of TiO2 grains along the [001] axis, relatively large specific surface area, and increased amounts of surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) were induced to the heterojunction catalysts through this optimized heating strategy, which boosts the photocatalytic activity of ZnO/TiO2 nano-film. The degradation experiment inndicates that the ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal efficiency can reach 97.3% in 2 h duration, which was higher than that of the samples annealed for the same periods. Meanwhile, the prepared ZnO/TiO2 photocatalytic film exhibited favorable stability of 95.5% degradation efficiency after the fourth run and general applicability for the photodegradation of various contantains, whih removed 99.5% of ofloxacin (OFX) and 77.6% of tetracycline (TC) in 2 h and 94.1% of Rhodamine B (RhB) in 1 h. This work is expected to yields a novel insight into the production of heterojunction photocatalysts with excellen ability for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in the practical industry.

Effect of Functional Group Modifications on the Photocatalytic Performance of g-C3 N4

In recent years, photocatalysis has received increasing attention in alleviating energy scarcity and environmental treatment, and graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ) is used as an ideal photocatalyst. However, it still remains numerous challenges to obtain the desirable photocatalytic performance of intrinsic g-C₃ N₄ . Functional group functionalization, formed by introducing functional groups into the bulk structure, is one of the common modification techniques to modulate the carrier dynamics and increases the number of active sites, offering new opportunities to break the limits for structure-to-performance relationship of g-C₃ N₄ . Nevertheless, the general overview of the advance of functional group modification of g-C₃ N₄ is less reported yet. In order to better understand the structure-to-performance relationship at the molecular level, a review of the latest development of functional group modification is urgently needed. In this review, the functional group modification of g-C₃ N₄ in terms of structures, properties, and photocatalytic activity is mainly focused, as well as their mechanism of reaction from the molecular level insights is explained. Second, the recent progress of the application of introducing functional groups in g-C₃ N₄ is introduced and examples are given. Finally, the difficulties and challenges are presented, and based on this, an outlook on the future research development direction is shown.

Fabrication of InVO4/SnWO4 heterostructured photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light

In the present study, novel InVO₄/SnWO₄ nanocomposites with different concentrations of SnWO₄ were successfully prepared using a facile hydrothermal technique and investigated employing a wide range of analytical methods for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). X-ray diffraction analysis showed the presence of the orthorhombic phases of both InVO₄ and SnWO₄ in the composite catalyst. Dispersion of SnWO₄ nanoplates over the InVO₄ nanosheets enhanced the synergistic interactions, improving the separation of charge carriers and their transfer. Furthermore, the formation of heterostructure expanded the absorption range and promoted visible light harvesting. The TC degradation efficiency of InVO₄/SnWO₄ nanocomposite (5 mg loading of SnWO₄) reached 97.13% in 80 min under visible light, with the kinetic rate constants 5.51 and 7.63 times greater than those of pure InVO₄ and SnWO₄, respectively. Additionally, the scavenger results proved that hydroxyl radicals and holes played a significant role in the photodegradation of TC. Furthermore, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient photocurrent response analysis showed enhanced e^-/h⁺ partition efficiency. Thus, the formation of heterostructure with strong synergistic interactions can effectively transfer the excited charge carriers and shorten the reunion rate. Accordingly, the InVO₄/SnWO₄ nanocomposites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic performance due to the increased number of charge carriers on the surface.

Single cobalt atom anchored on carbon nitride with cobalt nitrogen/oxygen active sites for efficient Fenton-like catalysis

As one of the tactics to produce reactive oxygen radicals, the Fenton-like process has been widely developed to solve the increasingly severe problem of environmental pollution. However, establishing advanced mediators with sufficient stability and activity for practical application is still a long-term objective. Herein, we proposed a facile strategy through polymeric carbon nitride (pCN) in-situ growth single cobalt atom for efficient degradation of antibiotics by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy prove the single cobalt atoms are successfully anchored on pCN. Moreover, extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis shows that the embedded cobalt atoms are constructed by covalently forming the Co-N bond and Co-O bond, which endow the single-atom cobalt catalyst with high stability. Experiment results indicate that the prepared single-atom cobalt catalyst can be used for efficient PMS activation catalytic degradation of tetracycline with a high degradation rate of 98.7 % in 60 min. And the CoN/O sites with single cobalt atoms serve as the active site for generating active radical species (singlet oxygen) from PMS activation. This work may expand the strategy for constructing single-atom catalysts and extend its application for the advanced oxidation process.

Structure-performance correlation guided cerium-based metal-organic frameworks: Superior adsorbents for fluoride removal in water

Fluoride in the hydrosphere exceeds the standard, which could be critically hazardous to human health and the natural environment. The adsorption method is a mature and effective way to remove pollutants in water, including fluoride. In this study, we synthesized three kinds of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) with different structures and properties by modulating the organic ligands (i.e., trimesic acid (BTC), 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA), and terephthalic acid (BDC)) via the solvothermal method. The adsorption kinetics of Ce-MOFs on fluoride well fit the pseudo second order model, and their adsorption isotherms also conform to Langmuir isothermal model. The thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The maximum saturated adsorption capacities of Ce-BTC, Ce-PMA, and Ce-BDC are 70.7, 159.6, and 139.5 mg g^-1, respectively. Ce-MOFs have stable and excellent adsorption capacity at pH = 3-9. Coexisting anions (Cl^-, SO₄^2-, and NO₃^-) do not affect the performance of Ce-MOFs for fluoride removal. Moreover, Ce-MOFs also show their broad prospect as superior fluoride adsorbents because of their excellent performance and reusability in real water samples. Organic ligands have a remarkable influence on the defluoridation performance of Ce-MOFs. This work will provide a feasible idea for designing MOFs as superiors adsorbents for defluoridation.

Effects of activated carbon, biochar, and carbon nanotubes on the heterogeneous Fenton oxidation catalyzed by pyrite for ciprofloxacin degradation

Pyrite and engineering carbon materials have received increasing attention for their catalytic potential in Fenton reactions due to their extensive sources and low cost. However, effects of carbon materials on the degradation of pollutants by pyrite-catalyzed heterogeneous Fenton oxidation have not been fully understood. In this study, the performance of pyrite-catalyzed heterogeneous Fenton system on the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) was investigated in the presence of activated carbon (AC), biochar (BC), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Synchronous and asynchronous experiments (adsorption and catalysis) were conducted to elucidate the roles of the carbon materials in pyrite-catalyzed Fenton reactions. The results demonstrated that all the three carbon materials accelerated the pyrite-catalyzed Fenton oxidation of CIP. Under the experimental conditions, the reaction rates, which were obtained by fitting the synchronous experimental results with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, of pyrite/AC, pyrite/BC and pyrite/CNTs with H₂O₂ for the removal of CIP were 8.28, 3.40 and 3.37 times faster than that of pyrite alone. Adsorption experiments and characterization analysis showed that AC had a higher adsorption capacity than BC and CNTs for CIP, which enabled it to distinguish itself in assisting the pyrite-catalyzed Fenton oxidation. In the presence of the carbon materials, the adsorption effect should not be neglected when studying the catalytic performance of pyrite. Free radical quenching experiments and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) were used to detect and identify free radical species in the reactions. The results showed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) contributed significantly to the degradation of CIP. The addition of carbon materials promoted the production of •OH, which favored the degradation of CIP. The results of this study suggested that the synergistic effect of oxidation and adsorption promoted the removal of CIP in pyrite/carbon materials/H₂O₂ systems, and coupling pyrite and carbon materials shows great potential in treating antibiotic wastewater.

Recent progress on elemental sulfur based photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications

The growing needs of the rising population and blatant misuse of resources have contributed enormously to environmental problems. Among the various methods, photocatalysis has emerged as one of the effective remediation methods. The continuous search for effective photocatalysts that can be made from abundant, cheap, non-toxic materials is going on. Although sulfur is a known insulator, recent sulfur use as a visible light photocatalyst has ushered a new era in this direction. Sulfur is a non-toxic, cheap, and abundant photocatalyst, exhibiting significant photocatalytic properties. But, hydrophobicity, poor light-harvesting and high recombination rate of charge carriers in elemental sulfur photocatalyst are some of the major drawbacks of the elemental sulfur photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity of sulfur as a single element was low, but various methods such as nanoscaling, heterojunction formation, doping and surface modifications have been used to enhance it. The review highlights sulfur's crystal structure, electronic and optical properties, and morphological changes, making it an excellent visible light photocatalyst. The article points to the limitations of sulfur as a single photocatalyst and various strategies to improve the shortcomings. More recently, there has been an emphasis on the synthesis of metal-free photocatalysts. This review provides its readers with a comprehensive detail of sulfur being used as a dopant in improving the photocatalytic properties of metal-free photocatalysts and their environmental remediation use. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for sulfur-based nanostructures are presented.

Review on alternatives for the reduction of textile microfibers emission to water

The microplastics (MPs) are considered one of the most threatening pollutants. One of the main concerns is their continuous and cumulative flow to water environments, as they are very difficult to be removed. Microfibers (MFs) are a significant type of MPs, with textile articles as one of the most renowned sources. This review aims to provide the current status of these MFs as pollutants, discussing possible alternatives from the manufacturing until the final disposition of MFs. There are many alternatives to reduce these pollutants from reaching the environment but also gaps that need to be further evaluated and addressed. Besides, it should be noticed that alternatives could be complementary between them. Some viable and non-contaminating solutions to reduce this pollution are currently on the market. Also, one relevant aspect is the final disposition or usage of the retained MFs to avoid them from reaching aquatic environments.

Bimetallic modified halloysite particle electrode enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation for the degradation of sulfanilamide

The treatment of antibiotics wastewater by electrocatalytic oxidation has attracted much attention. In the paper, a novel halloysite bimetallic (HLS-Cu-Mn) particle electrode material was prepared and a bench-scale electrocatalytic reaction tank was designed. A three-dimensional electrocatalytic oxidation reactor composed of HLS-Cu-Mn and a bench-scale electrocatalytic reaction tank was used to degrade Sulfanilamide (SA) wastewater. Characterization of the synthesized material was conducted with Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray polycrystalline powder diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The electron spin resonance spectroscopy test results confirmed that HLS-Cu-Mn produced a large number of •OH. The electrochemical workstation confirmed that HLS-Cu-Mn had strong electrocatalytic activity and repolarization ability. Under the optimum preparation conditions and degradation process parameters, the removal efficiency of SA and TOC was 99.84% and 88.95% respectively. The method also has good degradation efficiency for aniline, phenol, herbicides, antibiotics, and dyeing wastewater. It was found that 4 main intermediates appeared in the degradation process by Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography/triple tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS). In sum, it was believed that this work provides a new vision and idea for water treatment.
