Semi-IPN Alg/PAO microspheres for the efficient removal of U(VI) from alkaline solution by experimental and DFT study

Phytic acid-functionalized polyamidoxime/alginate hydrogel for targeted uranium extraction from acidic wastewater

Efficient removal of uranium from radioactive wastewater is crucial for both environmental protection and sustainable development of nuclear energy. However, selectively extracting uranium from acidic wastewater remains a significant challenge. Here we present a phytic acid-functionalized polyamidoxime/alginate hydrogel (PAG) via a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction. The PAG, leveraging the robust binding affinity of phytic acid and the selective coordination of amidoxime for U(VI), exhibited high efficiency and selectivity in adsorbing U(VI) from acidic uranium-containing wastewater. At pH 2.50, U(VI) adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 60 min, showcasing a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 218.34 mg/g. Additionally, the PAG demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining a uranium removal rate exceeding 90 % over five adsorption-desorption cycles. Remarkably, the as-synthesized PAG removed 94.1 % of U(VI) from actual acidic uranium-contaminated groundwater with excellent anti-interference performance, reducing U(VI) concentration from 272.0 μg/L to 16.1 μg/L and making it meet the WHO drinking water standards (30 μg/L). The adsorption mechanism was elucidated through XPS and DFT calculation, revealing that the uranyl ion primarily coordinated with phosphate and amidoxime groups on phytic acid and polyamidoxime, respectively. These findings underscore the promising potential of PAG hydrogel for addressing acidic uranium-containing wastewater from uranium mining and metallurgy.

Preparation and mechanism study of hydrogen bond induced enhanced composited gelatin microsphere probe

Fluorescent probes offer rapid and efficient detection of metal ions. However, their properties, including high biotoxicity and low detection limits, often limit their utility in biological systems. In this study, we used a microfluidic approach to fabricate photocrosslinked gelatin microspheres with a micropore, providing a straightforward method for loading fluorescent probes into these microspheres based on the adsorption effect and hydrogen bonding interaction. The gelatin microsphere loaded probes, GelMA/TPA-DAP and GelMA/TPA-ISO-HNO were designed and obtained. The results show that these probes exhibit obviously low biotoxicity compared to the original molecular probes TPA-DAP and TPA-ISO-HNO. Simultaneously, it is found that GelMA/TPA-DAP and GelMA/TPA-ISO-HNO have better detection sensitivity, the detection limits are 35.4 nM for Cu2+, 16.5 nM for Co2+ and 20.5 nM for Ni2+ for GelMA/TPA-DAP probe. Compared to the original TPA-DAP they are improved by 37.2 %, 26.3 % and 22.6 % respectively. The corresponding coordination constants were 10.8 × 105, 4.11×105 and 6.04×105, which is larger than homologous TPA-DAP. Similar results were also verified in the GelMA/TPA-ISO-HNO probe. The mechanism was investigated in detail by theoretical simulations and advanced spectral analysis. The density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that the probes are anchored inside the microspheres and the molecular structure is modified due to the hydrogen bonding interaction between the microsphere and the molecular probe, which makes GelMA/TPA-DAP exhibit stronger coordination capacity with metal ions than homologous TPA-DAP. In addition, the adsorption effect also provided some synergistic enhancement contribution. Meanwhile, cellular experiments have also shown that the composite microspheres can improve the biocompatibility of the probe and will provide a wider range of applications towards bioassay. This simple and effective method will provide a convenient way to improve the performance of fluorescent probes and their biological applications.

Modified alginate materials for wastewater treatment: Application prospects

Sodium alginate is a natural macromolecule widely used because of its abundance, low cost of acquisition, and rich hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the matrix. The physical modification of sodium alginate can be made by blending it with polymer materials. The so-yielded alginate complex is commonly unstable in an aqueous environment due to alginate backbones' high hydrophilicity. The chemical modification can remove its hydrophilic groups and introduce special functional groups or polymers onto the alginate backbones to provide excess reaction sites for specific reactions and effective complexation sites for accommodating antibiotics, dyes, heavy metal ions, and radioactive elements. Sodium alginate has been used in water treatment engineering under revised modification protocols. This article also reviews the latest modification protocols for sodium alginate and outlines the novel application of the modified materials. The limitations of modified sodium alginate materials are described, and research prospects are put forward.

3D Composite U(VI) Adsorbents Based on Alginate Hydrogels and Oxidized Biochar Obtained from Luffa cylindrica

3D naturally derived composites consisting of calcium alginate hydrogels (CA) and oxidized biochar obtained from Luffa cylindrica (ox-LC) were synthesized and further evaluated as adsorbents for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous media. Batch-type experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of various physicochemical parameters on the adsorption performance of materials. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 1.7 mol kg-1 (404.6 mg·g-1) at pH 3.0 for the CA/ox-LC with a 10% wt. ox-LC content. FTIR spectroscopy indicated the formation of inner-sphere complexes between U(VI) and the surface-active moieties existing on both CA and ox-LC, while thermodynamic data revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and entropy-driven. The experimental data obtained from the adsorption experiments were well-fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Overall, the produced composites exhibited enhanced adsorption efficiency against U(VI), demonstrating their potential use as effective adsorbents for the recovery of uranium ions from industrial effluents and seawater.

Porphyrin-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework for visible light driven photocatalytic removal of U(VI) from real low-level radioactive wastewater

The reduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) precipitates by visible light is an environmentally friendly and highly effective strategy to remove uranium from uranium-containing radioactive wastewater. Herein, a porous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) of UPC-H4a was self-assembled by intermolecular hydrogen bonds of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-(2,4-diaminotriazine)phenyl) porphyrin to remove U(VI) from aqueous solution. UPC-H4a has high crystallinity with permanent porosity, excellent photocatalytic property, good chemical stability, and strong photocatalytic reducibility. The experiments showed that UPC-H4a removed 98.18% of U(VI) after illumination for 120 min, with high selectivity, strong ion interference resistance, and good reusability. A real low-level radioactive wastewater was employed to estimate the potential of UPC-H4a for practical application and its removal rate can reach 66.14% in the presence of redox competing metal ions, exhibiting great potential for practical application. The DFT calculations and EPR spectra revealed that a more negative electrostatic potential of DAT-porphyrin and the formed intermolecular hydrogen bonds in UPC-H4a can facilitate the participation of photogenerated electrons in the O2/∙O2- reaction, and the radical of ∙O2- was proved to be the critical participant in U(VI) photoreduction. The discovery of UPC-H4a in this work will help to develop more potential applications of HOFs as photocatalysts in radioactive wastewater treatment.
