Integration of nitrate and abscisic acid signaling in plants

To meet the demands of the new Green Revolution and sustainable agriculture, it is important to develop crop varieties with improved yield, nitrogen use efficiency, and stress resistance. Nitrate is the major form of inorganic nitrogen available for plant growth in many well-aerated agricultural soils, and acts as a signaling molecule regulating plant development, growth, and stress responses. Abscisic acid (ABA), an important phytohormone, plays vital roles in integrating extrinsic and intrinsic responses and mediating plant growth and development in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, elucidating the interplay between nitrate and ABA can contribute to crop breeding and sustainable agriculture. Here, we review studies that have investigated the interplay between nitrate and ABA in root growth modulation, nitrate and ABA transport processes, seed germination regulation, and drought responses. We also focus on nitrate and ABA interplay in several reported omics analyses with some important nodes in the crosstalk between nitrate and ABA. Through these insights, we proposed some research perspectives that could help to develop crop varieties adapted to a changing environment and to improve crop yield with high nitrogen use efficiency and strong stress resistance.

Water-saving techniques: physiological responses and regulatory mechanisms of crops

Water-saving irrigation techniques play a crucial role in addressing water scarcity challenges and promoting sustainable agriculture. However, the selection of appropriate water-saving irrigation methods remains a challenge in agricultural production. Additionally, the molecular regulatory mechanisms of crops under water-saving irrigation are not yet clear. This review summarizes the latest research developments in the application of different water-saving irrigation technologies to five important crops (rice, wheat, soybeans, maize, and cotton). It provides an overview of the impact of different irrigation techniques on crop yield, water use efficiency (WUE), physiology, growth, and environmental effects. Additionally, the review compares and contrasts the molecular regulatory mechanisms of crops under water-saving irrigation techniques with those under traditional drought stress, emphasizing the significance of combining irrigation technologies with genetic engineering for developing drought-resistant varieties and improving WUE. Furthermore, the integration of various technologies can stimulate new management strategies, optimize water resource utilization, and enhance sustainability, representing a major focus for future research. In conclusion, this review underscores the importance of water-saving irrigation technologies, especially when combined with genetic engineering, in addressing water resource scarcity, increasing crop yields, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

A simple and high-throughput method for xylem sap collection

Xylem is the most important route for root-to-shoot translocation of water, nutrients and signaling molecules. Although a number of studies have been performed using xylem sap, its collection requires special equipment and is usually low throughput. Here, we developed a simple and high-throughput method for the collection of both medium- (<1 ml) and small- (<200 μl) volume xylem sap samples. Using a rice Cd transporter mutant, we demonstrated that our method allows for the effective evaluation of xylem sap Cd concentrations.
