Antioxidant properties and cytotoxic effects of selected edible plants in Southeast Asia for further use as phytogenic antioxidant additives

Synthetic and phytogenic antioxidants improve productive performance, antioxidant activity, gene expression, and offspring quality in breeder hens subjected to heat stress

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a synthetic source (a combination of vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, and L-carnitine) and phytogenic sources (a combination of clove, green tea pomace, and Vietnamese coriander) in overcoming heat stress (HS) damage in female breeder hens on production, blood chemistry, sperm survival in the oviduct, antioxidant properties, gene expression, and quality of offspring. One hundred SUT female breeder hens were housed in individual cages and divided into 4 treatment groups: T1) basal diets in the thermoneutral (TN) zone; T2) basal diets under HS; 3) basal diets with synthetic antioxidants under HS; and T4) basal diets with phytochemical antioxidants under HS. The result revealed that HS condition had a negative effect on reducing final body weight, egg weight, and 1-day-old chick weight while increasing water intake and FCR and altered blood chemicals in breeder hens compared to TN breeder hens (P < 0.05). However, either synthetic or phytogenic antioxidants resulted in increased egg production and hatchability, while decreasing the number of late stages of embryo death during the incubation (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the synthetic antioxidants also improved the uniformity of chicks and reduced late-stage embryo death compared with phytogenic antioxidants (P < 0.05). HS breeder hens fed with either of the antioxidant sources exhibited higher antioxidant capacity in terms of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging (in yolk, liver, and breast meat) and FRAP radical scavenging (in yolk and liver) and lower liver malondialdehyde than HS breeder hens fed with the control diet (P < 0.05). Additionally, the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) in the liver was upregulated, whereas the expression of proinflammatory cytokines (nuclear factor-κB) and heat shock proteins (HSP70 and HSP90) was downregulated in breeder hens that received both antioxidant sources (P < 0.05). Future investigations should focus on the potential for combinations of synthetic and phytogenic antioxidants in diets for HS breeder hens.

Morphological, phytochemical and genetic characterization of Centella asiatica accessions collected throughout Vietnam and Laos

Pennywort (Centella asiatica L.) is commonly grown in the tropical world for its nutritional and medicinal values. Valuable saponins in pennywort are extensively investigated for their anti-tumour activities. The diversity in morphology, phytochemical contents and genetics among pennywort accessions has been extensively studied to identify elite landraces for large-scale production. While pennywort is widely consumed in Vietnam, a systematic characterization of their diverse morphology, secondary metabolites and genetics is lacking. In this work, 26 pennywort accessions were collected across Vietnam and Laos. Their morphological features and yields were characterized under uniform agro-climatic conditions at Hue city in central Vietnam. The highest yield was obtained with HUIB_CA20 (478 g per tray), compared to the lowest yield in HUIB_CA19 (107 g per tray). Furthermore, a range of phytochemical markers, including vitamin C, reducing sugar, carotenoid, tannin, phenolic, flavonoid and saponin contents, were determined. Based on yield, phenolic and flavonoid contents, HUIB_CA20 and HUIB_CA27 were determined to be elite cultivars in this germplasm. Finally, microsatellite analysis was performed to explore the genetic diversity within the germplasm. Using fourteen SSR primer pairs, a total of 47 alleles were identified with 45 alleles (96 %) being polymorphic. These results will be useful for breeding programs aiming to create elite pennywort cultivars with enhanced properties.

Enhancing Performance and Emission Characteristics of Biodiesel-Operated Compression Ignition Engines through Low Heat Rejection Mode and Antioxidant Additives: A Review

Depending on the heat content and compression ignition (CI) engine combustion, biodiesel is a viable substitute fuel. Biodiesel is an oxygenated, safe, sulfur-free, biodegradable, and renewable fuel. It may be utilized in CI engines in any combination with diesel fuel without requiring the engine to be significantly modified. Many research studies have been made with several biodiesels as diesel substitutes, including Pongamia pinnata, Jatropha curcas, Mangifera indica, and Madhuca longifolia. The topic of the current review is the potential of renewable fuels to outperform diesel fuel in terms of performance, combustion, and emission characteristics. In the present study, CI engines are fueled with biodiesels made from Man. indica, Mad. longifolia, and pongamia seed oil. Adopting low heat rejection (LHR) mode CI engines and adding an antioxidant agent in addition to the biodiesel blends may resolve the issue of these biodiesels' poorer performance and increased NO emission. Both these additions may provide positive approaches in both performance and emission.

Evaluation of extracts from Sida acuta, Phyllanthus amarus, Parkia biglobosa and their herbal ointment for therapeutic and biological activities

Herbal extracts are a well-known source of therapeutically important bioactive chemicals since they are widely available, relatively inexpensive, and have fewer adverse effects. The three plants' leaves have been used to treat a variety of illnesses in Ghana, including skin conditions and wound infections. Their effectiveness as an ointment in treating the aforementioned illnesses has not yet been shown, though. The extracts were made into an ointment with polyethylene glycol (PEG), and both the ointment and the raw extracts were examined for in vitro antibacterial activity. The three (3) chosen bacterial isolates were subjected to potential activities of the plant extracts from different extractants. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for the plant extracts were both low. The herbal ointment made with Sida acuta extract from both extractants showed significantly different activity (P < 0.05), against the test pathogens when compared to the reference medication (Madecassol®). However, the activities of formulated herbal ointment from both P. amarus and P. biglobosa extracts were comparable at higher concentrations to the standard drug used. Notably, both plant extracts and extract-PEG manufactured ointments exhibit significant in vitro efficacy against the disease-causing bacterial species. The current study is the first in-depth account of Parkia species with regard to an examination of herbal ointments made from leaves extract obtained utilizing solvents such as water and ethanol. Our research findings have important implications for the pharmaceutical industry in terms of providing a suitable, workable, and alternative supply of bioactive compounds and anti-infective agents.
