Vanadium: A Review of Different Extraction Methods to Evaluate Bioavailability and Speciation

The excessive input of heavy metals such as vanadium (V) into the environment has been one of the consequences of global industrial development. Excessive exposure to V can pose a potential threat to ecological safety and human health. Due to the heterogeneous composition and reactivity of the various elements in soils and sediments, quantitative analysis of the chemical speciation of V in different environmental samples is very complicated. The analysis of V chemical speciation can further reveal the bioavailability of V and accurately quantify its ecotoxicity. This is essential for assessing for exposure and for controlling ecological risks of V. Although the current investigation technologies for the chemical speciation of V have grown rapidly, the lack of comprehensive comparisons and systematic analyses of these types of technologies impedes a more comprehensive understanding of ecosystem safety and human health risks. In this review, we studied the chemical and physical extraction methods for V from multiple perspectives, such as technological, principle-based, and efficiency-based, and their application to the evaluation of V bioavailability. By sorting out the advantages and disadvantages of the current technologies, the future demand for the in situ detection of trace heavy metals such as V can be met and the accuracy of heavy metal bioavailability prediction can be improved, which will be conducive to development in the fields of environmental protection policy and risk management.

Determination of Elemental Composition in Soft Biological Tissue Using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry: Method Validation

Determination of elemental concentrations in biological tissue is fundamental to many environmental studies. Analytical methods typically used to quantify concentrations in such studies have minimum sample volumes that necessitate lethal or impactful collection of tissues. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has small sample volume requirements and offers environmental practitioners an opportunity to employ low-impact sample collection methods. Environmental applications of LA-ICP-MS are limited by the lack of validated methods, partly due to the need for dry samples and scarcity of matrix-matched certified reference materials (CRMs). This study validates an LA-ICP-MS method to determine concentrations of 30 elements in soft biological tissue (fish ovary and muscle). Tissue samples (median: 0.48 grams (g); inter-quartile range: 0.30 g to 0.56 g wet weight) were dehydrated, powdered, compressed into pellets (weighing approximately 0.03 g) and analyzed using LA-ICP-MS alongside three matrix-matched CRMs. The method yielded concentration determinations for CRM elements that were typically accurate to within 30% of theoretical concentrations, and precise (relative standard deviation <20%). These results were repeatable: accuracy rarely deviated from theoretical values by more than 20%, and precision rarely exceeded 33%. Determinations for biological samples were replicable irrespective of tissue (ovary or muscle). There was good linearity between analyte signal strength and theoretical concentration (median R²≥ 0.981 for all elements) across ranges typically encountered in environmental studies. Concentrations could not be consistently obtained (i.e., determined concentrations were typically below detection limits) for boron, vanadium, molybdenum, and cadmium in muscles, and arsenic in both ovaries and muscles; however, detection limits were sufficiently low for most environmental contexts. Further methodological refinement could include the incorporation of spiked standards to extend linear ranges, and fine-tuning instrument parameters to obtain smoother signal intensities for rare elements. The method presented promotes the use of low-impact sample collection methods while enabling high-quality determinations of elemental concentrations in biological tissues.

Fast iron speciation in seawater by catalytic Competitive Ligand Equilibration-Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry with tenfold sample size reduction

Iron speciation analysis in seawater is a fundamental step to understand the cycling of this element in oceanic waters, in view of its central role in regulating primary productivity and its connection to global planetary cycles. At present, analytical procedures are the bottleneck for speciation analysis, in term of both time and sample size requirement. Here we present a novel instrumental configuration for the speciation analysis of iron by the Competitive Ligand Equilibration - Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CLE-CSV) procedure. The new system features a 1 mL microcell and a silver wire pseudoreference enabling a tenfold reduction of the sample volume. 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene was used as the complexing ligand and atmospheric oxygen as the catalytic enhancer because they ensured the best analytical performances in terms of detection capabilities. The side reaction coefficient for the FeDHN complex α_Fe'DHN was calibrated against EDTA and an average value of 9.25 for logK'_Fe'DHN was calculated. The method was successfully validated in UV digested seawater using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), which has known stability constant for iron. The method was lastly applied to six samples from the Ross Sea water column (Antarctica), demonstrating its fit for purpose for the detection of trace amounts of iron ligands in seawater. Thanks to the employed instrumental configuration and the high sensitivity, the proposed method achieved a tenfold reduction in sample size, a tenfold increase in sensitivity compared with other methods employing DHN and halved the analysis time with respect to the fastest method reported in the literature. Half an hour is enough to measure a 12 point titration, making the analysis of at least three titrations per day feasible. It is expected that the application of this procedure will foster the sample throughput, thanks to the reduced analysis time, and make possible the analysis of limitedly available and challenging samples, like porewater and vent fluids via the tenfold reduction in sample size.

Determination of Lead with a Copper-Based Electrochemical Sensor

This work demonstrates determination of lead (Pb) in surface water samples using a low-cost copper (Cu)-based electrochemical sensor. Heavy metals require careful monitoring due to their toxicity, yet current methods are too complex or bulky for point-of-care (POC) use. Electrochemistry offers a convenient alternative for metal determination, but the traditional electrodes, such as carbon or gold/platinum, are costly and difficult to microfabricate. Our copper-based sensor features a low-cost electrode material-copper-that offers simple fabrication and competitive performance in electrochemical detection. For anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) of Pb, our sensor shows 21 nM (4.4 ppb) limit of detection, resistance to interfering metals such as cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn), and stable response in natural water samples with minimum sample pretreatment. These results suggest this electrochemical sensor is suitable for environmental and potentially biological applications, where accurate and rapid, yet inexpensive, on-site monitoring is necessary.
