Microfluidic integrated gas sensors for smart analyte detection: a comprehensive review

The utilization of gas sensors has the potential to enhance worker safety, mitigate environmental issues, and enable early diagnosis of chronic diseases. However, traditional sensors designed for such applications are often bulky, expensive, difficult to operate, and require large sample volumes. By employing microfluidic technology to miniaturize gas sensors, we can address these challenges and usher in a new era of gas sensors suitable for point-of-care and point-of-use applications. In this review paper, we systematically categorize microfluidic gas sensors according to their applications in safety, biomedical, and environmental contexts. Furthermore, we delve into the integration of various types of gas sensors, such as optical, chemical, and physical sensors, within microfluidic platforms, highlighting the resultant enhancements in performance within these domains.

Recent Progress and Perspectives on Polyurethane Membranes in the Development of Gas Sensors

In today's technology, gas sensors are of great importance in areas such as assessing environmental impacts, monitoring gas production facilities, measuring natural gas, controlling mines and gas leaks. Improving sensor sensitivity and decreasing the determination time is among the subjects that are continuously investigated. The use of polymeric membranes to make such improvements is common practice in the gas sensor field. By the development of polymeric membrane-based gas sensors and increasing the measurement sensitivity, accurate, sensitive, precise and fast measurements of toxic gases, volatile organic gases, and trace gases have been possible. Therefore, polyurethane membranes have been promising in the development of next-generation gas sensors based on membrane diffusion to ensure real-time and continuous monitoring of gases in industry and academic studies. This study aims to evaluate, compare and discuss the recent developments in the use of polyurethane membranes in existing gas detection technologies with chemical, electrical and optical measurement methods. In these measurement methods, polyurethane structures act as a selectively permeable membrane, an ideal matrix material for conductive additives or a suitable film structure for coating the conductive polymeric films. Conductive additives or conductive film structures for gas sensors play an important role in the detection of the gas structure with the change in electrical properties during the passage of gas molecules. This review has focused on important properties such as selectivity, detection time and measurement sensitivity concerning gas detection technology containing polyurethane, which has been used so far.

Synthesis of Interpenetrating Polymer Networks Based on Triisocyanate-Terminated and Modified Poly(urethane-imide) with Superior Mechanical Properties

Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on triisocyanate-terminated poly(urethane-imide)s (PUIs) were prepared by in situ interpenetrating reactions between modified polyurethane (PU) with different ratios of polyimide (PI). The effects of PU, which was made from hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene modified with triisocyanate, and the amounts of PI on the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and crystalline character of the IPNs were discussed. Triisocyanate-terminated PUI showed that the highest tensile strength was 38 times that of the diisocyanate-terminated materials. Supramolecular cross-linking from an additional hydrogen-bonding network of modified PU and the degree of interpenetration with a regular imide structure of PI were introduced, which accounted for the remarkable improvement in mechanical properties of IPNs. Preferable thermal stability and glass transition temperature for the hard segment of IPNs were rewarded with increasing PI content. X-ray diffraction revealed vigorous segmental mixing between the soft and hard segments of modified PUI. Scanning electron micrographs showed the "fibrous assembly" morphology and short-range-ordered structure of modified PUI.

A QCM-based assay of drug content in Eudragit RS 100-based delivery systems

A specific version of the quartz crystal microbalance method has been proposed for quantitative evaluation of drug content in polymeric drug carrier systems. In this study, ammonio methacrylate copolymer (type B) microparticles and their standard solutions have been prepared and loaded with set amounts of the medications diltiazem (base) and lidocaine. The analytes have been segregatim deposited on the surface of the resonator and the drug content in them has been derived from the downshift of the resonance frequency produced by irreversible interaction of the drug molecules with irradiating hydrochloric gas. The obtained results have been statistically processed on a number of samples and have been found to exhibit excellent coherence to set theoretical values. As an alternative, the conventional pharmacopoeial UV-Vis spectral method has also been separately applied to studied samples, revealing worsened performance in the case of lidocaine due to polymer matrix interference. Thus the universality of the QCM method has been proved to add to its versatility and precision. The method appears to be readily applicable to the routine pharmaceutical quantity control of bulk and multiparticulate drug forms.
