Determination of phosphorus and sulfur in uranium ore concentrates by triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Diverse thermal desorption combined with self-aspirating corona discharge ionization for direct mass spectrometry analysis of complex samples

The thermal desorption (TD) technique is widely employed in modern mass spectrometry to facilitate the detection of non-volatile analytes. In this study, we developed a compact TD device based on a small resistance wire and coupled it with a self-aspirating corona discharge ionization (CDI) source to conduct direct MS analysis of various liquid and solid samples. Due to its small size and low heat capacity, the temperature of the TD module can be flexibly and rapidly modulated by controlling the power sequence. Multiple heating modes, including pulse heating (PH), isothermal heating, and step heating (SH), are realized and characterized, and then applied for the detection of different real samples. In particular, the PH mode is suitable for the simultaneous detection of multiple components in samples with relatively simple matrices, while the SH mode is capable of component separation. In addition, the sensitivity and quantitative capability of the TD-CDI system for DEP solutions were tested, showing acceptable stability with a relative standard deviation of about 6.7% and a detection limit of 0.088 ng. Overall, the developed TD-CDI system provides a simple, convenient, and versatile tool for direct mass spectrometry analysis of real samples.

Pyrohydrolysis as a sample preparation method for the subsequent halogen determination: A review

The use of pyrohydrolysis as a sample preparation method for further halogen determination is extensively discussed in this review, covering studies published in the last 30 years. This method is compatible with both organic (such as cellulose, fossil fuels, carbon nanotubes, and graphite) and inorganic (such as rocks, silicates, alumina, and nuclear fuels) matrices. It has also been used for samples with different organic matter content, such as coal, mineral supplements, and soil. Sample masses vary greatly and are dependent on organic matter content in the samples, ranging from 50 mg to up to 500 mg for organic samples, and up to 4 g to inorganic samples. Different additives, such as V2O5 and cellulose, or flame retardants, such as silica, could also be used to improve analyte recovery using pyrohydrolysis. Dilute alkaline solutions or even water have been used as absorbing solutions, with mainly NaOH, NH4OH, and mixtures of NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 being applied. Furthermore, pyrohydrolysis is compatible with detection techniques such as ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, ion selective electrode, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, spectrophotometry, and isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Other advantages usually related to this method are the low residual carbon concentration of digests and the low residue generation. A critical comparison with alkaline extraction, alkaline fusion, Schöniger oxygen flask combustion, combustion bomb and microwave-induced combustion is also provided.

Effective monitoring of Platinum-DNA adducts formation under simulated physiological conditions by CE-ICP-MS/MS

The leading Pt(II)-based anticancer drugs have been used for decades; however, chemotherapy with their application is burdened with severe side effects. The administration of compounds capable of DNA platination in the form of prodrugs has the potential to overcome the drawbacks associated with their use. Progress toward their clinical application depends on establishing proper methodologies that would allow assessing their ability to bind to DNA in the biological environment. Herein, we propose implementing the approach based on the hyphenation of capillary electrophoresis with inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS/MS) for studying Pt-DNA adduct formation. The presented methodology opens the possibility to employ the multielement monitoring for studying the differences in the behavior of Pt(II) and Pt(IV) complexes and, interestingly, revealed the formation of various adducts with DNA and cytosol components for the latter one.

Investigation of ICP-MS/MS for total sulfur quantification in freshwater dissolved organic matter

Sulfur-containing functional groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM) interact with trace metals, which in turn affects trace metal mobility and bioavailability in aquatic environments. Typical methods for identification and quantification of sulfur in DOM are costly, complex, and time intensive. Triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) is capable of part per billion-level sulfur quantification in environmental samples and is a more accessible analytical technique compared with other available methods. This study is the first published investigation of ICP-MS/MS for the direct quantification of sulfur in freshwater DOM. Sulfur (³² S) detection occurs at a mass-to-charge ratio of 48 as ³² S¹⁶ O⁺ after removal of interferences and reaction with oxygen gas. We compare three commonly used DOM preparation methods to assess variability among replicate samples. Preparation of freshwater DOM samples by solid phase extraction followed by evaporation overnight and dissolution in 2% nitric acid results in the most accurate quantification of sulfur. Analysis of sulfur in Suwannee River Fulvic Acid standard serves as method validation, measuring a carbon-normalized sulfur concentration that is ∼20% higher than previously reported methods. We apply the ICP-MS/MS analysis method to determine sulfur concentrations in DOM from nine lakes in the northern Midwest. Carbon-normalized sulfur concentrations in the selected lakes are in general agreement with previously reported percentages of sulfur-containing formulas in DOM found by Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectroscopy.
