Oligothienylenevinylenes incorporating 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) units

Low Band Gap Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Systems Based on 3-Alkoxy or 3-Pyrrolidino-4-cyanothiophene and Benzothiadiazole Units

3-Hexyloxy-4-cyanothiophene, 3-pyrrolidil-4-cyanothiophene, and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) units are used with benzothiadiazole as building blocks for the development of three new conjugated donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) derivatives. The DAD molecules have the central acceptor part, which is formed by combining electron-withdrawing cyano groups and the benzothiadiazole moiety, in common. Theoretical calculations and UV/Vis and electrochemical data reveal the key role of the end-capped donor to tune the electronic properties of the derivatives. A study of the electropolymerization process of the three derivatives shows the strong influence of the donor parts on both the reactivity of the precursors and the electronic properties of the resulting polymers. Derivatives end-capped with pyrrolidinocyano thiophene or EDOT units lead to films of polymers presenting low band gaps of around 0.9-1.4 eV. Upon oxidation, the two polymers present different behavior. In the presence of the pyrrolidinocyano thiophene moieties, oxidation leads to a blueshift of the absorption bands, whereas with EDOT units a classical redshift, giving high absorption in the near-IR region, is observed for the oxidized states.

Robust ethylenedioxythiophene-vinylene oligomers from fragile thiophene-vinylene cores: synthesis and optical, chemical and electrochemical properties of multicharged shapes

Oligomers of ethylendioxythiophene-vinylene have been prepared. Their optical, electrochemical and chemical properties have been studied in detail by absorption and emission spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry, Raman techniques and spectroelectrochemistry complemented with quantum chemical calculations. A comparison with their non-ethylendioxy and non-vinylene parents has been done. The inclusion of the EDO plus the vinylene function generates more robust electronic ground states regarding the largely flexible thiophene-vinylene (n TV) oligomeric homologues. The redox features of the new compounds are also rich of oxidative processes arising as an interesting stabilising balance effect between the oxygen fragment in the EDO groups (mesomeric effect) and the linear π-conjugated structure. The oxidised species have been characterised, which show the ability for the formation of mixed valence charge-transfer complexes and π dimers of different oxidation states, in particular, in the electrochemical medium, resulting that the electrochemical response is accounted for a succession of aggregation and electron-transfer steps. With this work, a full understanding of the optical and electronic properties of these new oligomers in the context of the oligomer approach has been proposed.

A versatile and efficient synthesis of bithiophene-based dicarboxaldehydes from a common synthon

High-resolution electronic spectra of ethylenedioxythiophene oligomers

The photophysical properties of a series of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene oligomers (OEDOT) with up to five repeat units are studied as function of conjugation length using absorption, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and triplet-triplet absorption spectroscopy at low temperature in a rigid matrix. At 80 K, a remarkably highly resolved vibrational fine structure can be observed in the all electronic spectra which reveals that the electronic structure of the oligomers strongly couples to two different vibrational modes (approximately 180 and approximately 50 meV). The energies of the 0-0 transitions in absorption, and fluorescence, phosphorescence, and triplet-triplet absorption all show a reciprocal dependence on the inverse number of repeat units. The triplet energies inferred from the phosphorescence spectra are accurately reproduced by quantum chemical DFT calculations using optimized geometries for the singlet ground state (S0) and first excited triplet state (T1). Using vibrational IR and Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemical DFT calculations for the normal modes in the ground state, we have been able to assign the vibrations that couple to the electronic structure to fully symmetric normal modes. The high-energy mode is associated with the well-known carbon-carbon bond stretch vibration, and the low-energy mode involves a deformation of the bond angles within the thiophene rings and a change of C-S bond lengths. Experimentally obtained Huang-Rhys parameters and theoretical normal mode deformations are used to analyze the geometry changes between T1 and S0 and to semiexperimentally predict the geometry in the S1 state for 2EDOT.
