Abstract
Iminosugar derivatives containing a pyrrolidine-phosphine moiety were prepared from carbohydrates and used as catalysts in the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between alkyl allenoates and electron-deficient imines. The corresponding 1,2,3,5-tetrasubstituted pyrrolines were obtained in good yields and diastereoselectivities but with moderate enantiocontrol. The stereochemical outcome of the reaction depends on the substituent at the nitrogen atom and hydroxyl groups, the configuration of the stereogenic centers and the distance between the diphenylphosphine group and the pyrrolidine skeleton of the catalyst. The preparation of both enantiomers of the catalyst allowed the corresponding enantiomeric pyrrolines to be obtained with similar yields, diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Under catalysis by chiral phosphine, an asymmetric isomerization/annulation cascade reaction of allylamines with allenoates was realized. A wide range of γ-substituted allenoates were tolerated to afford chiral pyrroline derivatives in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities. In the reaction, isomerization of readily available N-allylamines to reactive aliphatic imines through a 1,4-proton shift is a key step, which circumvents the isolation of highly unstable alkyl N-sulfonylimines.

Abstract
A phosphine-catalyzed approach to pyrrolines has been developed that involves two mechanistically unlinked catalytic processes. The first involves the redox isomerization of amino crotonates to provide access to aliphatic tosyl imines, which then engage in a (3+2) annulation with various allenoates. The reaction shows generality, with 24 examples established, along with a low yielding and moderately enantioselective variant. Mechanistic studies indicate that the viability of the process is linked to the selection of catalysts with similar propensity to add to the two coupling partners.

Abstract
Covering: 1975-2020The ibophyllidine alkaloids are unique pyrroloindole alkaloids exhibiting a five-membered D-ring in contrast to the six-membered D-ring of the more common Aspidosperma and Strychnos alkaloids. This structural feature has made them sought-after targets for organic chemists as well as for the elucidation of their biosynthesis. Beginning with the first and eponymous member ibophyllidine, isolation and structure determination is discussed. The main focus of this review are the diverse chemical approaches towards the ibophyllidines in context with their respective biosynthesis. The often employed Diels-Alder reaction strategy, two other named reaction-based strategies and the most recent enantioselective strategies are presented and compared.

Abstract
We have developed a phosphine-catalyzed (4+1) annulative rearrangement for the preparation of 3-pyrrolines from allenylic carbamates via phosphonium diene intermediates. We employed this methodology to synthesize an array of 1,3-disubstituted- and 1,2,3-trisubstituted-3-pyrrolines, including the often difficult to prepare 2-alkyl variants. A mechanistic investigation employing allenylic acetates and mononucleophiles unexpectedly unveiled that a phosphine-catalyzed (4+1) reaction for the construction of cyclopentene products, previously reported by Tong, might not occur through a phosphonium diene, as had been proposed, but rather through multiple mechanisms working in concert. Consequently, our phosphine-catalyzed rearrangement is most likely the first transformation to involve the unequivocal formation of a phosphonium diene intermediate along the reaction pathway. To demonstrate the synthetic utility of this newly developed reaction, we have completed concise formal syntheses of the pyrrolizidine alkaloids (±)-trachelanthamidine and (±)-supinidine.

Abstract
The hallmark of nucleophilic phosphine catalysis is the initial nucleophilic addition of a phosphine to an electrophilic starting material, producing a reactive zwitterionic intermediate, generally under mild conditions. In this Review, we classify nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions in terms of their electrophilic components. In the majority of cases, these electrophiles possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds: alkenes (section 2), allenes (section 3), alkynes (section 4), and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) alcohol derivatives (MBHADs; section 5). Within each of these sections, the reactions are compiled based on the nature of the second starting material-nucleophiles, dinucleophiles, electrophiles, and electrophile-nucleophiles. Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions that occur via the initial addition to starting materials that do not possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds are collated in section 6. Although not catalytic in the phosphine, the formation of ylides through the nucleophilic addition of phosphines to carbon-carbon multiple bond-containing compounds is intimately related to the catalysis and is discussed in section 7. Finally, section 8 compiles miscellaneous topics, including annulations of the Hüisgen zwitterion, phosphine-mediated reductions, iminophosphorane organocatalysis, and catalytic variants of classical phosphine oxide-generating reactions.

Abstract
We have prepared a previously unreported family of P-stereogenic [2.2.1] bicyclic chiral phosphines through straightforward syntheses starting from the natural product carvone. This design rationale prompted the development of an unforeseen C-dealkenylation reaction. We have applied these organocatalysts in the asymmetric syntheses of a bevy of pyrrolines, obtained in high yields and enantioselectivities, including a biologically active small molecule, efsevin.

Abstract
A novel and efficient phosphine-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of α-nitroethylallenic esters is reported. This process appears to be practical for the stereoselective syntheses of (Z)-furan-2(3H)-one oxime derivatives in excellent yields. Mechanistically, the reaction involves a phosphine-catalyzed Michael addition of an alkylideneazinate and rearrangement of the cyclic nitronate to the α-nitrosodihydrofuran.

Abstract
Described herein is a catalytic asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-actinophyllic acid, with the key step being a chiral phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation between an imine and an allenoate to form a pyrroline intermediate in 99% yield and 94% ee. The synthesis also features CuI-catalyzed coupling between a ketoester and a 2-iodoindole to shape the tetrahydroazocine ring; intramolecular alkylative lactonization; SmI2-mediated intramolecular pinacol coupling between ketone and lactone subunits to assemble the complex skeleton of (-)-actinophyllic acid; and an unprecedented regioselective dehydroxylation.

Abstract
We have prepared two new diastereoisomeric 2-aza-5-phosphabicyclo[2.2.1]heptanes from naturally occurring trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline in six chemical operations. These syntheses are concise and highly efficient, with straightforward purification. When we used these chiral phosphines as catalysts for reactions of γ-substituted allenoates with imines, we obtained enantiomerically enriched pyrrolines in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. These two diastereoisomeric phosphines functioned as pseudoenantiomers, providing their chiral pyrrolines with opposite absolute configurations.

Abstract
Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis of allenes with electrophiles is one of the most powerful and straightforward synthetic strategies for the generation of highly functionalized carbocycle or heterocycle structural motifs, which are present in a wide range of bioactive natural products and medicinally important substances. The reaction topologies can be controlled through a judicious choice of the phosphine catalyst and the structural variations of starting materials. This Tutorial Review presents selected examples of nucleophilic phosphine catalysis using allenes and electrophiles.

Abstract
In nucleophilic phosphine catalysis, tertiary phosphines undergo conjugate additions to activated carbon-carbon multiple bonds to form β-phosphonium enolates, β-phosphonium dienolates, β-phosphonium enoates, and vinyl phosphonium ylides as intermediates. When these reactive zwitterionic species react with nucleophiles and electrophiles, they may generate carbo- and heterocycles with multifarious molecular architectures. This article describes the reactivities of these phosphonium zwitterions, the applications of phosphine catalysis in the syntheses of biologically active compounds and natural products, and recent developments in the enantioselective phosphine catalysis.

Abstract
Dipolar addition of cyclic azomethine imines with cyclic vinyl sulfones gave rise to functionalized tricycles that exhibited fluxional behavior in solution at room temperature. The scope of the synthetic methodology was explored, and the origin of the fluxional behavior was probed by NMR methods together with DFT calculations. This behavior was ultimately attributed to stereochemical inversion at one of two nitrogen centers embedded in the tricyclic framework. Two tetracycles were also synthesized, and the degree of signal-broadening in the NMR spectra was found to depend on the presence of substitution next to the inverting nitrogen center.

Abstract
An array of N-tosylated α-aminoalkylallenic esters was prepared and their cyclization under the influence of nucleophilic phosphine catalysts was explored. The α-aminoalkylallenic esters were prepared through aza-Baylis-Hillman reactions or novel DABCO-mediated decarboxylative rearrangements of allenylic carbamates. Conversion of these substrates to 3-carbethoxy-2-alkyl-3-pyrrolines was facilitated through Ph(3)P-catalyzed intramolecular γ-umpolung addition.

Abstract
In this study we performed the total synthesis of the terpene indole alkaloid (+)-ibophyllidine through a pathway involving asymmetric phosphine catalysis, with our novel l-4-hydroxyproline-derived chiral phosphine mediating the key [3 + 2] annulation. Hydrogenation of the [3 + 2] adduct allowed the rapid formation of the stereochemically dense pyrrolidine ring of (+)-ibophyllidine in excellent yield with exceptionally high levels of both diastereo- and enantioselectivity. We constructed the remainder of the pentacyclic skeleton through an intramolecular alkylation and an intramolecular aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction.

Abstract
In this paper we describe the phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2], [3 + 3], [4 + 3], and [3 + 2 + 3] annulations of azomethine imines and allenoates. These processes mark the first use of azomethine imines in nucleophilic phosphine catalysis, producing dinitrogen-fused heterocycles, including tetrahydropyrazolo-pyrazolones, -pyridazinones, -diazepinones, and -diazocinones. Counting the two different reaction modes in the [3 + 3] cyclizations, there are five distinct reaction pathways-the choice of which depends on the structure and chemical properties of the allenoate. All reactions are operationally simple and proceed smoothly under mild reaction conditions, affording a broad range of 1,2-dinitrogen-containing heterocycles in moderate to excellent yields. A zwitterionic intermediate formed from a phosphine and two molecules of ethyl 2,3-butadienoate acted as a 1,5-dipole in the annulations of azomethine imines, leading to the [3 + 2 + 3] tetrahydropyrazolo-diazocinone products. The incorporation of two molecules of an allenoate into an eight-membered-ring product represents a new application of this versatile class of molecules in nucleophilic phosphine catalysis. The salient features of this protocol--the facile access to a diverse range of nitrogen-containing heterocycles and the simple preparation of azomethine imine substrates--suggest that it might find extensive applications in heterocycle synthesis.
