Abstract
pKa values of C-H bonds remain unreported and challenging in fluorous solvents because of these solvents' unique physicochemical properties, although they have been measured, theorized and predicted successfully in water and common organic solvents. Herein, a new CF3SO2-substituted anchor compound designed for matching the physicochemical properties of polar fluorinated arenes is synthesized. Its self-dissociation constants in these solvents are used as bases for experimentally determining the pKa values of 36 C-H compounds in them. These experimentally determined pKa values exhibit excellent linear free-energy relationships and correlate well with their corresponding DFT-calculated values. These data indicate that the polar fluorinated arenes are thermodynamically more favorable for deprotonation of ketone derivatives than acetonitrile as reaction media, resulting in enhanced deprotonation-promoted CO2 fixation. The pKa values determined in this work can be used as an important guidance tool for reactions involving the formation and cleavage of C-H bonds in polar fluorinated arenes.

Abstract
Organophosphorus compounds are fundamental for the chemical industry due to their broad applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials science. Despite their high importance, the sustainable and cost-effective synthesis of organophoshoryl derivatives remains very challenging. Here, we report the first successful regio- and stereoselective hydrophosphorylation of terminal allenamides using an affordable copper catalyst system. This reaction offers an efficient protocol for the synthesis of (E)-allylic organophosphorus derivatives from various types of P-nucleophiles, such as H-phosphonates, H-phosphinates, and secondary phosphine oxides. Key advantages of this ligand-free and atom-economic strategy include low toxicity of the Cu-based catalyst, cost effectiveness, mild reaction conditions, and experimental simplicity, making it competitive with methods that use toxic and expensive Pd-based catalysts. In an effort to comprehend this process, we conducted extensive DFT calculations on this system to uncover the mechanistic insights of this process.

Abstract
A chemodivergent synthesis of polycyclic aromatic diarylamines and carbazoles was established by employing thermally or photochemically controlled processes using KOtBu/1,10-phenanthroline. The synthetic processes involved the dephosphinylation of 9-amino-10-(phosphinyl)phenanthrenes, which were obtained through a regioselective palladium-catalyzed direct [4 + 2] benzannulation of phosphinyl ynamines with 2-iodobiphenyls. When the dephosphinylation was conducted under heating conditions (∼100 °C), it proceeded to yield 9-aminophenanthrene. However, when the reaction was performed under the illumination of purple light (LEDs, λmax = ca. 390 nm), KOtBu/1,10-phenanthroline promoted single-electron-transfer-triggered dephosphinylation followed by cyclization, producing the corresponding π-expanded carbazoles. We successfully synthesized a highly π-expanded dicarbazole through a dual dephosphinylative cyclization. Additionally, we present the optical properties of a series of amino compounds produced through the dephosphinylative processes.

Abstract
An efficient divergent approach to functionalized naphthalene derivatives, the naphthalenamides, via base-mediated and silver-catalyzed cyclization has been developed using enone-oxazolones as the precursors. This protocol utilized base in methanol with heating to construct the corresponding hydroxynaphthalenamides 2 by a C-C bond formation, oxazolone ring-opening, and aromatization in good yields. On the other hand, phosphorylated dihydronaphthylamides 3 were generated by using H-phosphonate as the phosphonating reagent in a silver-catalyzed cyclization involving the phospha-1,4-addition/intramolecular ring closure with concomitant C-P/C-C bond formation in good yields.

Abstract
We describe a copper catalyst that promotes the addition of phosphines to cyclopropenes at ambient temperature. A range of cyclopropylphosphines bearing different steric and electronic properties can now be accessed in high yields and enantioselectivities. Enrichment of phosphorus stereocenters is also demonstrated via a Dynamic Kinetic Asymmetric Transformation (DyKAT) process. A combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic study supports an elementary step featuring insertion of a CuI -phosphido into a carbon-carbon double bond. Density functional theory calculations reveal migratory insertion as the rate- and stereo-determining step, followed by a syn-protodemetalation.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed enantioselective radical difunctionalization of alkenes from readily available alkyl halides and organophosphorus reagents possessing a P-H bond provides an appealing approach for the synthesis of α-chiral alkyl phosphorus compounds. The major challenge arises from the easy generation of a P-centered radical from the P-H-type reagent and its facile addition to the terminal side of alkenes, leading to reverse chemoselectivity. We herein disclose a radical 1,2-carbophosphonylation of styrenes in a highly chemo- and enantioselective manner. The key to the success lies in not only the implementation of dialkyl phosphites with a strong bond dissociation energy to promote the desired chemoselectivity but also the utilization of an anionic chiral N,N,N-ligand to forge the chiral C(sp3 )-P bond. The developed Cu/N,N,N-ligand catalyst has enriched our library of single-electron transfer catalysts in the enantioselective radical transformations.

Abstract
Organophosphorous compounds have recently emerged as a powerful class of compounds with widespread applications, such as in bioactive natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and organic materials, and as ligands in catalysis. The preparation of these compounds requires synthetic techniques with novel catalytic systems varying from transition metal, photo- and electrochemical catalysis to transformations without metal catalysts. Over the past few decades, the addition of P-H bonds to alkenes, alkynes, arenes, heteroarenes and other unsaturated substrates in hydrophosphination and other related reactions via the above-mentioned catalytic processes has emerged as an atom economical approach to obtain organophosphorus compounds. In most of the catalytic cycles, the P-H bond is cleaved to yield a phosphorus-based radical, which adds onto the unsaturated substrate followed by reduction of the corresponding radical yielding the product.

Abstract
A highly regioselective divergent approach for the phosphine-containing indane/indene derivatives from the ene-yne-oxazolone precursors was reported. An insight into the reaction mechanism involving the phospha-1,4-addition followed by 5-exo-dig ring closure with a concomitant C-P/C-C bond formation was also proposed. This promising protocol utilized H-phosphonate as the phosphonating reagent in a silver-catalyzed or base-mediated cascade cyclization to construct the corresponding phosphorylated spiroindenoxazolones and amidoindenes, respectively, in good yields (up to 88% yield).

Efficient Recovery of Rare Earth Elements (Pr(III) and Tm(III)) From Mining Residues Using a New Phosphorylated Hydrogel (Algal Biomass/PEI). METALS 2021. Abstract
With the target of recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from acidic leachates, a new functionalized hydrogel was designed, based on the phosphorylation of algal/polyethyleneimine beads. The functionalization strongly increased the sorption efficiency of the raw material for Pr(III) and Tm(III). Diverse techniques were used for characterizing this new material and correlating the sorption performances and mechanisms to the physicochemical structure of the sorbent. First, the work characterized the sorption properties from synthetic solutions with the usual procedures (study of pH effect, uptake kinetics, sorption isotherms, metal desorption and sorbent recycling, and selectivity from multi-element solutions). Optimum pH was found close to 5; sorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir equation (maximum sorption capacities close to 2.14 mmol Pr g−1 and 1.57 mmol Tm g−1). Fast uptake kinetics were modeled by the pseudo-second order rate equation. The sorbent was highly selective for REEs against alkali-earth and base metals. The sorbent was remarkably stable for sorption and desorption operation (using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl2 solutions). The sorbent was successfully applied to the leachates of Egyptian ore (pug leaching) after a series of pre-treatments (precipitation steps), sorption, and elution. The selective precipitation of REEs using oxalic acid allows for the recovery of a pure REE precipitate.

Abstract
A catalytic enantioselective addition of diarylphosphine oxides to 1-alkenyl(diaryl)phosphine oxides was achieved by using a chiral ureate as a chiral strong Brønsted base catalyst. The reaction followed by the reduction of phosphine oxide moieties provided chiral 1,2-diphosphinoalkanes, which are a family of useful chiral ligands for asymmetric transition metal catalysis.

Abstract
Potential widespread applications of organoarsenic chemistry have been limited by the inherent lack of safe and effective As-C bond formation reactions. Several alternative reagents and methods have been developed in the last few decades to address the hazards and drawbacks associated with traditional arsenic synthetic strategies. Herein, this minireview summarizes the advances made in nucleophilic, electrophilic, radical and metal-mediated As(III)-C bond formations while specifically highlighting the behavior of arsenic synthons with various well-established reagents (eg. Grignard reagents, organolithium compounds, organometallic reagents, radical initiators and Lewis/Brønsted bases). Avenues for asymmetric synthesis are also discussed, as are recent advances in organoarsenic chemistry suggesting that arsines exhibit novel reactivities independent from that of other relatively more well explored Group V cogeners.

Abstract
Recent advances in computer hardware and software, particularly the availability of machine learning libraries, allow the introduction of data-based topics such as machine learning into the Biophysical curriculum for undergraduate and/or graduate levels. However, there are many practical challenges of teaching machine learning to advanced-level students in the biophysics majors, who often do not have a rich computational background. Aiming to overcome such challenges, we present an educational study, including the design of course topics, pedagogical tools, and assessments of student learning, to develop the new methodology to incorporate the basis of machine learning in an existing Biophysical elective course, and engage students in exercises to solve problems in an interdisciplinary field. In general, we observed that students had ample curiosity to learn and apply machine learning algorithms to predict molecular properties. Notably, feedback from the students suggests that care must be taken to ensure student preparations for understanding the data-driven concepts and fundamental coding aspects required for using machine learning algorithms. This work establishes a framework for future teaching approaches that unite machine learning and any existing course in the biophysical curriculum, while also pinpointing the critical challenges that educators and students will likely face.

Abstract
Synthetic challenges have significantly slowed the development of the catalytic asymmetric hydroarsination reaction despite it being a highly attractive C-As bond formation methodology. In addition, there is a poor understanding of the main reaction steps in such reactions which limit further development in the field. Herein, key intermediates of the hydroarsination reaction catalyzed by a PCP NiII -Cl pincer complex are presented upon investigating the reaction with DFT calculations, conductivity measurements, NMR spectroscopy, and catalytic screening. The novel Ni-Cl-As interaction proposed was then contrasted against known NiII -catalyzed hydrophosphination reactions to highlight dissimilarities between them even though P and As share a close group relationship. Lastly, the asymmetric hydroarsination of nitroolefins was further developed to furnish a library of chiral organoarsines in up to 99 % yield and 80 % ee under mild conditions (-20 °C to RT) between 5 to 210 mins.

Abstract
The activity of diethyl phosphite and diphenyl phosphate in propargylation reactions with N-nucleophiles of varying basicity is presented. A careful choice of the reaction conditions minimized undesired rearrangements and arylation processes, typical side reactions with Brønsted acid catalysis. These systems are compatible with technical solvents and presence of air, and they are also applicable to C-, O-, and S-nucleophiles.

Abstract
Given the periodic relationship of phosphines and arsines, is remodeling the catalytic asymmetric hydrophosphination reaction an efficient manner to develop the corresponding hydroarsination reaction? Herein, a chiral PCP-Pd(ii) pincer complex adept at generating enantioenriched phosphines was examined in the asymmetric hydroarsination reaction. Under distinct conditions, tertiary phosphines and arsines were generated in excellent yields (P: 96%, As: 91%) and ees (P: 90%, As: 85%). While secondary arsine reagents were not direct substitutes for the analogous phosphines, important parameters were identified which increased yield and ee of the hydroarsination reaction. Unlike the PCP-PdOAc pincer complex commonly used for hydrophosphinations, hydroarsination reactions involved a PCP-PdCl catalyst with 10 equiv. of CsF for optimal performance. Notable differences between the two reactions and their workup procedures were highlighted to guide further developments in the field. Lastly, respective mechanisms were proposed and contrasted for the activation of HEPh2 (E = P, As).

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed benzylic substitution of tert-butyl diarylmethyl carbonates with a pinacol-derived H-phosphonate proceeds to deliver the corresponding benzylic phosphorylated products in good yields. Moreover, the asymmetric synthesis is possible via a Pd/( Rp, R'p)-( S)-Mandyphos-catalyzed kinetic resolution-DYKAT (dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation) sequence, and optically active α-chiral diarylmethylphosphonates are obtained with synthetically useful yields and enantiomeric ratios (up to 50% and 92:8 er).

Abstract
Organophosphorus compounds (OP) are part of a group of compounds that may be hazardous to health. They are called neurotoxic agents because of their action on the nervous system, inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme and resulting in a cholinergic crisis. Their high toxicity and rapid action lead to irreversible damage to the nervous system, drawing attention to developing new treatment methods. The diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) enzyme has been considered as a potent biocatalyst for the hydrolysis of toxic OP and has potential for bioremediation of this kind of intoxication. In order to investigate the degradation process of the nerve agents Tabun, Cyclosarin and Soman through the wild-type DFPase, and taking into account their stereochemistry, theoretical studies were carried out. The intermolecular interaction energy and other parameters obtained from the molecular docking calculations were used to construct a data matrix, which were posteriorly treated by statistical analyzes of chemometrics, using the PCA (Principal Components Analysis) multivariate analysis. The analyzed parameters seem to be quite important for the reaction mechanisms simulation (QM/MM). Our findings showed that the wild-type DFPase enzyme is stereoselective in hydrolysis, showing promising results for the catalytic degradation of the neurotoxic agents under study, with the degradation mechanism performed through two proposed pathways.

Abstract
A series of amido Ca and Yb(II) complexes LM[N(SiMe3)2](THF) (1Yb, 1-4Ca) coordinated by amidine-amidopyridinate ligands L1-4 were synthesized via a transamination reaction between proligands L1-4H and bisamido complexes M[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 (M = Yb, Ca). The reactions of Yb[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 with proligands L2H-L4H containing CF3 and C6H4F fragments do not allow for preparing the target Yb(II) complexes, while the Ca analogues were synthesized in good yields. Complexes 1Yb and 1-4Ca were evaluated as precatalysts for hydrophosphination of styrene, p-substituted styrenes, α-Me-styrene, and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene with various primary and secondary phosphines (PhPH2, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2PH2, 2-C5NH4PH2, Ph2PH, Cy2PH). Complexes 1Yb, 1-4Ca performed high catalytic activities in styrene hydrophosphination with PhPH2 and Ph2PH and demonstrated high regioselectivity affording exclusively the anti-Markovnikov addition products. For primary PhPH2 the reactions (1:1 molar ratio of substrates) catalyzed by 1Yb, 1Ca, and 2Ca proved to be highly chemoselective affording the secondary phosphine Ph(PhCH2CH2)PH; however, complexes 3Ca and 4Ca led to the formation of both secondary and tertiary phosphines in 80:20 and 86:14 ratios. Styrene hydrophosphinations with 2,4,6-Me3C6H2PH2 and 2-pyridylphosphine for all complexes 1Yb and 1-4Ca proceeded much more slowly compared to PhPH2. Addition of 2-C5NH4PH2 to styrene catalyzed by complex 1Yb turned out to be non-regioselective and led to the formation of a mixture of Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov addition products, while all Ca complexes enabled regioselective anti-Markovnikov addition. Complexes 1Ca and 1Yb containing catalytic centers featuring similar ionic radii performed different catalytic activity: the ytterbium analogue proved to be a more active catalyst for intermolecular hydrophosphination of styrene with Cy2PH, 2-C5NH4PH2, and PhPH2, but less active with sterically demanding 2,4,6-Me3C6H2PH2. Styrenes containing in p-position electron-donating groups (Me, tBu, OMe) performed with noticeably lower rates in the reactions with PhPH2 compared to styrene. Complexes 1Yb, 1Ca, 2Ca, 3Ca, and 4Ca enabled addition of PhPH2 toward the double C═C bond of α-Me-styrene, and the reaction rate for this substrate is noticeably lower; however quantitative conversions were reached in ∼40 h. Complexes 1Ca and 2Ca promoted 1,2-addition of PhPH2 to 2,3-dimethyl butadiene with excellent regio- and chemoselectivity to afford linear secondary phosphines. Hydrophosphination of inert 1-nonene with Ph2PH with 40% conversion becomes possible due to the application of complex 2Ca (40 h, 70 °C). The rate law for the hydrophosphination of styrene with Ph2PH catalyzed by 1Ca was found to agree with the idealized equation: v = k[styrene]1[1Ca]1.
