Abstract
Herein, we report the oligopeptide-catalyzed site-selective acylation of partially protected monosaccharides. We identified catalysts that invert site-selectivity compared to N-methylimidazole, which was used to determine the intrinsic reactivity, for 4,6-O-protected glucopyranosides (trans-diols) as well as 4,6-O-protected mannopyranosides (cis-diols). The reaction yields up to 81% of the inherently unfavored 2-O-acetylated products with selectivities up to 15:1 using mild reaction conditions. We also determined the influence of protecting groups on the reaction and demonstrate that our protocol is suitable for one-pot reactions with multiple consecutive protection steps.

Abstract
N-(4-homoadamantyl)phthalimide (5) on excitation and population of the triplet excited state underwent intramolecular H-abstractions and gave products 6 and 7. The major product, exo-alcohol 6 was a result of the regioselective δ H-abstraction and the stereoselective cyclization of the 1,5-biradical. Minor products 7 were formed by photoinduced γ H-abstractions, followed by ring closure to azetidinols and ring enlargement to azepinediones. The observed selectivity to exo-alcohol 6 was explained by the conformation of 5 and the best orientation and the availability of the δ-H for the abstraction.

Abstract
Phthalimides 1-6 undergo photochemical reactions upon direct irradiation as well as triplet sensitization and give rise to new products. Besides formation of the primary photoproducts, the first photochemical step initiates a subsequent thermal domino reaction or a domino sequence of a thermal and a photochemical reaction. The latter, involving two photochemical intramolecular gamma-H abstractions, was observed with phthalimides 1, 3, and 6 and delivered stereospecifically the hexacyclic benzazepine products 12, 19, and 27, respectively. The lowest triplet states of 1-6 were characterized in several solvents upon direct and acetone-sensitized excitation. The intermolecular electron transfer from triethylamine and DABCO was studied, and the radical anions were observed. Electrochemical measurements showed that intramolecular electron transfer from the adamantyl group of 1-6 to the lowest triplet state of the phthalimides is not feasible. The formation of products can be explained by intramolecular H-abstraction from the (alkyl)adamantane to the excited phthalimide, either from the excited singlet state or a hidden upper excited triplet state.

Computational structure-activity study directs synthesis of novel antitumor enkephalin analogs. Amino Acids 2009; 38:1185-91. Abstract
The capability of a Support Vector Machines QSAR model to predict the antiproliferative ability of small peptides was evaluated by screening a virtual library of enkephalin-like analogs modified by incorporation of the (R,S)-(1-adamantyl)glycine (Aaa) residue. From an initial set of 390 compounds, the peptides, Tyr-Aaa-Gly-Phe-Met (2), Tyr-Aaa-Gly-Phe-Phe (3), Phe-Aaa-Gly-Phe-Phe (4) and Phe-Aaa-Gly-Phe-Met (5) were selected, synthesized and their antitumor activity was tested and compared to that of Met-enkephalin (1). The antiproliferative activity correlated with the computational prediction and with the foldamer-forming ability of the studied peptides. The most active compounds were the hydrophobic peptides, Phe-Aaa-Gly-Phe-Phe (4) and Phe-Aaa-Gly-Phe-Met (5), having a greater propensity to adopt folded structures than the other peptides.
