Abstract
Phosphonic analogs of octahydroisoindole-1-carboxylic acids are bicyclic proline derivatives of interest in drug design and enzymatic mechanism studies. Here we report the stereoselective synthesis of the cis- and trans-fused octahydroisoindole system using oxazoloisoindolone lactam and 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic anhydride as advanced chiral precursors, respectively, yielding enantiopure octahydroisoindolone intermediates with the desired stereochemistry at the ring junction. Finally, using these intermediates, the target (1R,3aR,7aS)- and (1R,3aR,7aR)-octahydroisoindole-1-phosphonic acids and their enantiomers were obtained with complete stereocontrol via highly diastereoselective addition of trimethyl phosphite to chiral N-acyliminium ions as the key step.

Abstract
We herein report the ammonium salt-catalyzed synthesis of chiral 3,3-disubstituted isoindolinones bearing a heteroatom functionality in the 3-position. A broad variety of differently substituted CF3S- and RS-derivatives were obtained with often high enantioselectivities when using Maruoka's bifunctional chiral ammonium salt catalyst. In addition, a first proof-of-concept for the racemic synthesis of the analogous F-containing products was obtained as well, giving access to one of the rare examples of a fairly stable α-F-α-amino acid derivative.

Abstract
Herein we have demonstrated the first report on 5-annulation of ketoimines to valuable isoindolinone-3-carboxylates. Instead of commonly used aldimine substrates, relatively less reactive ketoimines are employed for developing a TFA catalyzed organoreductive cyclization to furnish a variety of isoindolinones in excellent yield and reaction rate under mild reaction conditions. This is a metal-free event, which proceeds through a one pot ketoimine formation, hydride transfer from an organic reductant 2-(naphthalen-2-yl)-2,3-dihydrobenzo[ d]thiazole, and followed by five member cyclization sequences through TFA-activation of imine and ester groups. Studies on ESI-MS kinetics, leaving group aptitude, and control experiments led us to propose the mechanistic pathway of the new ketoimine-lactamization reaction. We have shown the synthetic utility of the emerging synthons through easy transformation of isoindolinones to different synthetic analogues. We investigated photophysical properties of the small molecules for their futuristic application as a pharmaceutical and materials, and the heterocycles displayed brilliant fluorescence activity.

Abstract
The dimeric cyclometalated complexes [Pd2{κ(2)C,N-C6H4CH2CH2C(R)(Me)NH2-2}2(μ-Cl)2] (R = Me (1a), H (1b)) are prepared by reacting 1,1-dimethyl-3-phenylpropylammonium or 1-methyl-3-phenylpropylammonium triflate with Pd(OAc)2 in a 1:1 molar ratio and subsequent treatment with excess NaCl. The mononuclear derivatives [Pd{κ(2)C,N-C6H4CH2CH2C(R)(Me)NH2-2}Cl(L)] (L = PPh3, R = Me (3a), H (3b); L = 4-picoline (4-pic), R = Me (4a), H (4b)) were prepared from 1a,b by splitting the chloro bridges with the neutral ligands L. A conformational analysis of the mononuclear palladacycles in solution has been carried out. Insertion of CO takes place into the Pd-C bond of complexes 1a,b, affording Pd(0) and the tetrahydro-benzazepinone 5a or 5b, which possesses potential pharmacological interest. Additionally, the triflate salt A or B undergoes catalytic carbonylation with CO to afford the corresponding N,N'-dialkylurea, using Pd(OAc)2/Cu(OAc)2, in boiling acetonitrile. The crystal structures of 3a·(1)/2H2O, 3b, 4b·CHCl3, and 5a were determined by X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract
Readily available chiral ammonium salts derived from cinchona alkaloids have proven to be effective phase transfer catalysts in the asymmetric Michael reaction of 3-substituted isoindolinones. This protocol provides a convenient method for the construction of valuable asymmetric 3,3-disubstituted isoindolinones in high yields and moderate to good enantioselectivity. Diastereoselectivity was also investigated in the construction of contiguous tertiary and quaternary stereocenters. The use of acrolein as Michael acceptor led to an interesting tricyclic derivative, a pyrroloisoindolinone analogue, via a tandem conjugated addition/cyclization reaction.

Abstract
A new method for the regioselective synthesis of 2-alkoxycarbonyl- and 2-(aminocarbonyl)phenylglycinate methyl esters has been developed. The reaction of the orthopalladated complex [Pd(μ-Cl)(C(6)H(4)(CH(CO(2)Me)NMe(2))-2)](2) (1) with nucleophiles HNu under a CO atmosphere results in the selective incorporation of the C(O)Nu moiety to the phenyl ring and formation of the carbonyl species ortho-C(6)H(4)(C(O)Nu)(CH(CO(2)Me)NMe(2)) (2a-j) (Nu = OR, NHR, NR(2)). Compounds 2a-j are conformationally restricted analogues of glutamic acid and glutamine and are interesting due to their biological and pharmacological properties. The reaction of [Pd(μ-Cl)(C(6)H(4)(CH(CO(2)Me)NHTf)-2)](2) (3) with nucleophiles in a CO atmosphere results, however, in the formation of the cyclic isoindolinone or the open 2-carboxyphenylglycine methyl esters, with the reaction outcome being driven by the choice of the solvent.
