Synthesis and application of an efficient calix[4]arene-based anion receptor bearing imidazole groups for Cr(VI) anionic species

Synthesis of Imidazolium Cations Linked to Para-t-Butylcalix[4]arene Frameworks and Their Use as Synthons for Nickel-NHC Complexes Tethered to Calix[4]arenes

A series of cationic p-tert-butylcalix[4]arenes, with side-arms that are functionalized with imidazolium groups, have been synthesized in good yields. The parent tetrahydroxy para-t-butyl-calix[4]arene was dialkylated at the phenolic hydrogen atoms using α,ω-dibromo-alkanes to yield bis(mono-brominated) alkoxy-chains of variable length. The brominated side-arms in these compounds were then further alkylated with substituted imidazoles (N-methylimidazole, N-(2,4,6-trimethyl-phenyl)imidazole, or N-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)imidazole) to yield a series of dicationic calixarenes with two imidazolium groups tethered, via different numbers of methylene spacers (n = 2-4), to the calixarene moiety. Related tetracationic compounds, which contain four imidazolium units linked to the calix[4]arene backbone, were also prepared. In all of these compounds, the NMR data show that the calixarenes adopted a cone configuration. All molecules were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and by MS studies. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were attempted on many mono-crystals of these cations, but significant disorder problems, partly caused by occluded solvent in the lattice, and lack of crystallinity resulting from partial solvent loss, precluded the good resolution of most X-ray structures. Eventually, good structural data were obtained from an unusually disordered single crystal of 5a, (1,3)-Cone-5,11,17,23-tetra-t-butyl-25,27-di-hydroxy-26,28-di-[2-(N-2,6-diisopropylphenyl-imidazolium)ethoxy]calix[4]arene dibromide and its presumed structure was confirmed. The structure revealed the presence of H-bonded interactions and some evidence of π-stacking. Some of these imidazolium salts were reacted with nickelocene to form the nickel N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes 7a-7d. A bis-carbene nickel complex 8 was also isolated and its structure was established by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The structure was disordered and not of high quality, but the structural data corroborated the spectroscopic data.

One novel calix[4]arene based QCM sensor for sensitive, selective and high performance-sensing of formaldehyde at room temperature

This work designs the synthesis of a novel amino morpholine schiff base functionalized calix[4]arene cage (SCC), its deposition onto Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) crystal surface, and usage for the selective detecting of formaldehyde (HCHO). The SCC modified QCM sensor has been characterized by contact angle measurements and microscopy images. Initial experiments revealed that the frequency response decreased significantly which means that there was a good interaction between the SCC molecules and HCHO. The proposed sensor exhibited a linear response towards HCHO in different concentrations ranging from 1.85 to 9.25 ppm, having the high sensitivity (S) and low limit of detection (LOD) being 18.324 Hz/ppm and 0.67 ppm, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of HCHO onto the QCM sensor were investigated for this sensing system and the adsorption data exhibited a good correlation with the Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption models in terms of the regression coefficient. The QCM sensor showed outstanding selective performance to HCHO among %97 RH and some a number of interfering volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as chloroform, dichloromethane, acetone, n-hexane, methanol, xylene, and ammonia. Thus, real-time, sensitive, selective and effective recognition of HCHO by the sensor can be explained some adsorption mechanisms such as size-fit concept, three-dimensional structures of molecules and interaction between moieties of the sensible film layer and analyte molecules such as hydrogen bonding interactions.

Investigation of high-performance adsorption for benzene and toluene vapors by calix[4]arene based organosilica (CBOS)

Calix[4]arene based organosilica (CBOS) was successfully prepared, characterized, and used for the adsorption of benzene and toluene vapors for the first time. The benzene and toluene vapor uptake of CBOS was determined to be 606 and 672 mg g⁻¹, respectively.

A phenyl glycinol appended calix[4]arene film for chiral detection of ascorbic acid on gold surface

This paper describes the synthesis of new chiral calix [4]arene derivative having (R)-2-phenylglycinol moiety (compound 6), and its chiral recognition studies for ascorbic acid (AA) enantiomers by using Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM). Initial experiments indicated that the outstanding selective chiral recognition (α) was observed as 2.61 for l-enantiomer of AA. The sensitivity (S) and the limit of detection (LOD) values for L-AA were calculated as 0.0226 Hz/μM and 0.63 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the sorption behavior and mechanism of AA onto compound 6 film were evaluated and the sorption data exhibited a good correlation with the Freundlich isotherm models. The maximum uptake of L-AA by the sensor was found as 5895.76 mg/g. In conclusion, chiral recognition of AA enantiomers as real-time, sensitive, selective and effective was performed by a calixarene derivative coated QCM sensor.

Removal of lindane from an aqueous solution by using aminopropyl silica gel-immobilized calix[6]arene

An aminopropyl silica gel-immobilized calix[6]arene (C[6]APS) has been used for the removal of lindane from an aqueous solution in batch sorption technique. The C[6]APS was synthesized with p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene hexacarboxylate derivative and aminopropyl silica gel in the presence of N,N'-diisopropyl carbodiimide coupling reagent. The sorption study was carried out as functions of solution pH, contact time, initial lindane concentration, C[6]APS dosage and ionic strength of solution. The matrix effect of natural water samples on the sorption efficiency of C[6]APS was also investigated. Maximum lindane removal was obtained at a wide pH range of 2-8 and sorption equilibrium was achieved in 2h. The isotherm analysis indicated that the sorption data can be represented by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Increasing ionic strength of the solutions increased the sorption efficiency and matrix of natural water samples had no effect on the sorption of lindane. By using multilinear regression model, regression equation was also developed to explain the effects of the experimental variables.

Surfactant Sensitized Calix[4]arenes Fluorescence Quenching Method for Speciation of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) in Water Samples

The surfactant sensitized spectrofluorimetry for speciation of chromium (Cr(VI)/Cr(III)) was developed. The analytical procedure was that the fluorescence intensity of l4,10,16,22-tetramethoxyl resorcinarene carboxylic acid derivatives (TRCA) could be selectively quenched by Cr(VI) and the fluorescence quenching value (ΔF=FTRCA-FCr(VI)-TRCA) was increased in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The main influence factors on the fluorescence quenching (ΔF) were investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of calibration curve for the determination of Cr(VI) was 0.10~5.00 μg/mL, and the detection limit was 0.024 μg/mL with RSD=2.10% (c=1.0 μg/mL, n=3). The concentration of Cr(III) was calculated by subtracting Cr(VI) from the total chromium determined after oxidizing Cr(III) to Cr(VI). The preliminary sensitized mechanism was discussed with the inclusion constant (K) of TRCA-Cr(VI), the fluorescence quantum yield of TRCA, and IR spectra characterization. The method has been applied to the speciation analysis of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) in water samples.
