Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and its derivatives (sulfite SO32- and bisulfite HSO3-) have important applications in industrial production and food preservation, but excessive intake can be hazardous to human health. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and selective HSO3- detection methods is essential to safeguard food safety and public health. Conventional HSO3- probes mainly rely on colorimetric or fluorescence detection, but these methods have obvious limitations in that the fluorescence signal disappears as soon as the UV irradiation is stopped, and they cannot provide long-lasting and readable detection results. Herein, a fluorescent probe (DP-1) constructed from diarylethene, fluorophores and ion recognition sites were designed and developed. DP-1 emits yellow fluorescence emission maximum at 600 nm in initial state, which is significantly quenched upon specific recognition of HSO3-. This recognition process demonstrates DP-1's good ion selectivity, interference resistance, and low detection limit of 16 nM. Notably, unlike conventional probes, DP-1 exhibits superior fluorescence properties before recognizing HSO3-, with no detectable photochromism. After ion recognition, its photochromic function is activated, while fluorescence completely disappears, demonstrating a switch from fluorescence to photochromism triggered by HSO3-. The mechanism of this recognition process was confirmed by nuclear magnetic titration, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and theoretical calculations. Additionally, DP-1 has been successfully applied for HSO3- detection in both live cellular and zebrafish imaging, with its excellent biocompatibility providing a reliable tool for in vivo imaging.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, non-covalent chemistry has introduced various promising artificial receptors and revolutionized the host-guest chemistry. These versatile receptors have particularly been entertained in sensing and recognizing of diverse neutral molecules and/or ionic entities (e. g. anions, cations and ion-pair) of particular interest. Notably, supramolecular chemistry had given birth to a plethora of important molecules, explored in the chemical, biological, environmental, and pharmacological world to resolve the critical issues related to the human health while keeping environmental concerns in mind. Amongst the various types of supramolecular monotopic receptors (anions, cations, and neutral molecules), heteroditopic receptors (ion-pair receptors) consisting of distinct binding sites in one system for both cation and anion, have gained much interest from the scientific community in recent past because of their unique binding abilities. Interestingly, these promising artificial receptors have shown potential applications in sensing, recognition, transport and extraction processes besides their uses in salt/waste purification. Bearing the importance of these systems in mind, we intended to report the recent developments in ion-pair chemistry. Herein, we divided the whole document into three main sections; first one describes the introduction and history of the ion-pairs receptors. The second portion highlights the synthesis and applications of ion-pair receptors in sensing, recognition, molecular machines, photoswitching behaviour, extraction and transport properties, whereas the last part of this manuscript provides concluding remarks as well as future prospects of ion-pair receptors. We hope that this manuscript will be helpful to stimulating researchers around the globe to find out the hidden opportunities in this and related areas.

Abstract
In this paper, a new and effective diaminopyrimidine-based chemosensor (DAPCS) was developed for the highly selective and ultra-sensitive detection of Cu2+ ion in aqueous media and living cell. Characterization and structure determining of DAPCS was determined by UV-Vis, FTIR and NMR analyses. It is observed that DAPCS and Cu (II) forms a ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) complex which produces distinguishable red color. The results also indicate that the DAPCS easily interacts with Cu2+ ion to form a 1:1 stoichiometry complex (DAPCS -Cu2+), resulting in a bathochromic shift in absorption maximum (429 nm to 449 nm) and remarkable quenching fluorescence intensity at the wavelength of 501 nm in DMSO-H2O solution. Furthermore, the detection limit of DAPCS towards Cu2+ was calculated to be 3.19 µM. Meanwhile, DAPCS was applied as fluorescent probe for detection of Cu2+ ions with the detection limit of 0.014 µM. The optimal pH range of probe DAPCS for quantitative analysis of Cu2+ ions was 9-11, which renders it suitable for detection of Cu2+ under physiological conditions. Additionally, the DAPCS could be applied to detect Cu2+ in real water samples and in HeLa cells, indicating the practical uses of DAPCS in real analyses.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent probe (DSD) was reasonably designed and synthesized with dansyl-labeled dipeptide (Dan-Ser-Asp-NH2). DSD featured remarkably large Stokes shift (230 nm) and perfect water solubility, and exhibited high selectivity and rapid recognition toward Cu2+via fluorescence quenching. The detection limit of DSD for Cu2+ was 2.4 nM, indicated that DSD has excellent sensitivity. In addition, the stoichiometry between DSD and Cu2+ were detected as 1:1 by fluorescence titration, Job's plot and ESI-HRMS data. As designed, DSD-Cu2+ system was able to sequentially detect CN- according to the displacement approach with fluorescence "off-on" response, and the detection limit for CN- was calculated to be 41.9 nM. Specifically, the response time of DSD with Cu2+ and CN- was less than 40 s, which rendered it suitable for real time detection in actual water samples. In addition, with the alternate addition of Cu2+ and CN-, the reversible cycles could be repeated for at least 10 times, indicated that DSD was a promising reversibility probe. DSD showed low toxicity and good biocompatibility, and was successfully applied to detect Cu2+ and CN- in living cells.

Abstract
Two viologen complexes containing N,N′-bis(carboxyethyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (BCEbpy) were prepared, namely [Zn(H2O)6]·(BCEbpy)·(p-BDC)·3H2O (1) and [Co(H2O)6]·(BCEbpy)·(p-BDC)·3H2O (2) (p-H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid), and their crystal structures, photochromism, frontier molecular orbitals, Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D fingerprint plots were investigated. The modulation effects of pi–pi interactions were explored on the electronic and photochromic properties of compounds 1 and 2. Due to the existence of photo-response viologen radicals, both complexes 1 and 2 display excellent photo-response properties in the sequence 1 < 2. The results indicate that compound 1 exhibits intramolecular electron transfer; compound 2 exhibits both intramolecular and intermolecular electron transfer, which is mainly due to the change of electronic and steric structures caused by pi–pi interactions with a faster photo-response rate than that of compound 1. The donor–acceptor modes, matching principles and inter/intramolecular atom–atom close contacts were illustrated by the density functional theory (DFT)-B3LYP/6-311(d,p) method. Two viologen complexes containing BCEbpy were prepared and displayed excellent photo-response properties by the modulation effect of pi–pi interactions.![]()
