Abstract
A strategy for the synthesis of 1-C-substituted thioglycals was developed from cyclic carbohydrate-derived ketene dithioacetals in a four-step sequence. The corresponding thioglycals, in two carbohydrate series, were first obtained by removal of the exocyclic glycosyl sulfoxide, followed by treatment with an organolithium reagent. Various electrophilic groups were introduced onto the thioglycal double bond after deprotonation and formation of a glycosyl lithium intermediate. A computational analysis was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the experimental results obtained in the two series.

Abstract
A short synthetic route to stereoselective access to C-glycosyl-aminoethyl sulfide derivatives has been developed through the reaction of tributhyltin derivatives of glycals with aziridinecarboaldehyde and the regioselective ring opening of a chiral aziridine with thiophenol. The absolute configurations of the resulting diastereoisomers were determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
The development of effective protection strategies is essential in the synthesis of complex carbohydrates and glycomimetics. This article describes a versatile four-stage protocol for the synthesis of α- or β-aryl-C-glycosides from unprotected d-glycals using two acetal protecting groups, ethoxyethyl and methoxypropyl, which are stable under harsh basic conditions and convenient for the C-1 metalation of glycals. Their stability was investigated in subsequent cross-coupling reactions with 1-iodonaphthalene followed by oxidative/reductive transformations to naphthyl-C-glycosides.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed carbonylation reactions of aromatic halides in the presence of various nucleophiles have undergone rapid development since the pioneering work of Heck and co-workers in 1974, such that nowadays a plethora of palladium catalysts are available for different carbonylative transformations. The carboxylic acid derivatives, aldehydes, and ketones prepared in this way are important intermediates in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other industrial products. In this Review, the recent academic developments in this area and the first industrial processes are summarized.

Abstract
Birch reductive alkylation of 2-aminobiphenyls affords access to highly functionalized polyenes that react through a Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative amination cascade or through a double 1,4-addition process to provide the tetracyclic skeleton of indole alkaloids with up to four stereogenic centers created in a single-pot operation.

Abstract
Because of their functionalities (enone, ketone, and acetal) and their bicyclic structure (steric factors), levoglucosenone (1,6-anhydro-3,4-dideoxy-beta-D-glycero-hex-3-enopyran-2-ulose) and isolevoglucosenone (1,6-anhydro-2,3-dideoxy-beta-D-glycero-hex-3-enopyran-4-ulose) are useful templates for the convergent and combinatorial synthesis of (1-->2), (1-->3), and (1-->4)-linked C-disaccharides in reactions combining them with sugar-derived carbaldehydes. Synthetic methods relying on conjugate nucleophilic additions of these enones, their combination with aluminum reagents and aldehydes (Baylis-Hillman reaction) and modified Takai-Hiyama-Nozaki-Kishi couplings of enol triflates derived from them with sugar-derived aldehydes are reviewed. Highly stereoselective methods have thus been developed. These allow the generation of disaccharide mimetics with a high molecular diversity.
