Abstract
We have synthesized two ligand systems, N(SO2)(R1)dpa (L1) and N(SO2)(R2)dpa (L2), where R1 = biphenyl and R2 = azobenzene, which are sulfonamide derivatives of the NNN-donor chelating dipicolylamine. Both L1 and L2 can be used as sensors for detecting Fe3+ and are highly sensitive and selective over a wide range of common cations. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations confirmed that the key excitations of L2 and the [Fe(L2)(H2O)3]3+ model complex involve -R2-unit-based π and π* charge transfer. L2 demonstrates a relatively high photostability, a fluorescence turn-on mechanism, and a detection limit of 0.018 μM with 1.00 μM L2 concentration, whereas L1 has a detection limit of 0.67 μM. Thus, both ligands have the potential to be used as fluorosensors for the detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
AbstractThe requirement for materials which exhibit good second and third order non-linear optical properties and also for materials which could sense metals in trace quantities has kindled renewed investigations. Organometallics and coordination compounds show a lot of promise as new NLO materials combining the variety of organic moieties with the strength and variable oxidation states of metals. Especially ligands which selectively detect industrial pollutants like Cd and biologically significant metals like Zn are necessary. In the current work the ligand 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-di(carboxaldehyde phenylhydrazone) (L) and its Ni2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Ir3+ complexes were synthesized. These were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, MS and CHN microanalysis techniques. The complexes were shown to have the formula [ML]2+. The second and third order NLO of the ligand and its complexes were recorded These new compounds were found to have same order of third order nonlinear optical susceptibility as that of CS2 and their second hyperpolarizability was an order of magnitude greater than that of C60. Furthermore the ligand also displays selective luminescence sensing of metals ions Fe2+ and Ir3+ even in the presence of other metal ions.

Abstract
Iron accumulation, oxidative stress and calcium signaling dysregulation are common pathognomonic signs of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson´s and Alzheimer’s diseases, Friedreich ataxia and Huntington’s disease. Given their therapeutic potential, the identification of multifunctional compounds that suppress these damaging features is highly desirable. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of N-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-2-yl)-2-(7-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)acetamide, named CT51, which exhibited potent free radical neutralizing activity both in vitro and in cells. CT51 bound Fe2+ with high selectivity and Fe3+ with somewhat lower affinity. Cyclic voltammetric analysis revealed irreversible binding of Fe3+ to CT51, an important finding since stopping Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling in cells should prevent hydroxyl radical production resulting from the Fenton-Haber-Weiss cycle. When added to human neuroblastoma cells, CT51 freely permeated the cell membrane and distributed to both mitochondria and cytoplasm. Intracellularly, CT51 bound iron reversibly and protected against lipid peroxidation. Treatment of primary hippocampal neurons with CT51 reduced the sustained calcium release induced by an agonist of ryanodine receptor-calcium channels. These protective properties of CT51 on cellular function highlight its possible therapeutic use in diseases with significant oxidative, iron and calcium dysregulation.

Abstract
The present study demonstrates the synthesis of water-soluble fluorescent calix[4]arenes (6 and 7) and its application in living cell imaging for Hg2+ detection at a low level. The synthesized fluorescent ligands 6 and 7 were characterized by 1H NMR technique. The fluorescent study showed both water soluble ligands were Hg2+ selective and follow photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. From the fluorimeter titration experiment detection limit was calculated as 1.14×10-5 and 3.42×10-5 for ligand 6 and 7, respectively. From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot binding constant values were evaluated as 666.7 and 733.3M-1 for 6 and 7, respectively. The interactions between ligands 6 and 7 and Hg2+ were also demonstrated in living cells, SW-620, using Fluorescent Cell Imager. While ligands 6 and 7 alone show fluorescent properties, they loss their action with the presence of Hg2+ in SW-620 cells.

Abstract
A new and efficient chemodosimeter for ferric ions has been developed. The visual and fluorescent behaviors of the compound toward various metal ions were investigated: ferric ions are distinguished from other cations by selective color change and unusual fluorescence enhancement in mixed aqueous solution. Fluorescence microscopy experiments showed that this receptor is effective for detection of Fe(3+) in vitro, developing a good image of the biological organelles. The sensing mechanism is shown to involve a hydrolysis process.

Abstract
Fluorescent chemosensors 1 and 2, with 1,2,4-oxadiazoles as the binding ligands and anthracene as the fluorophore, were synthesized through sequential 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of 25,27-dioxyacetonitrilecalix[4]arenes 8 and 11. The fluorescence of 1 was severely quenched by both Fe(3+) and Cu(2+) , whereas that of 2 was selectively quenched only by Fe(3+) . Control compound 4 was also selectively quenched by Fe(3+) , which implied the importance of anthryl-1,2,4-oxadiazole core; furthermore, it was shown to give various oxidation products such as oxanthrone 13, anthraquinone 14, and imidazolyl oxanthrone 15. In addition to product separation and identification, the fluorescent quenching mechanism of these 9-anthryl-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl derivatives by Fe(3+) is also discussed. Furthermore, it should be noted that the oxadiazole-substituted anthracene 4 and calix[4]arene 2 are Fe(3+) -selective fluorescent chemodosimeters without the interference by Cu(2+) .
