Solvent effect and amine interference on colorimetric changes of azobenzene-conjugated dithiaazadioxo crown ether mercury sensor

Structurally engineered ion-receptor probe immobilized porous polymer platform as reusable solid-state chromogenic sensor for the ultra-trace sensing and recovery of mercury ions

This study reports an efficacious solid-state optical sensor through the synergistic coalescences of an original chromoionophoric probe and a structurally engineered porous polymer monolith for the selective and sensitive colorimetric spotting of ultra-trace toxic mercury ions. The unique properties of the bimodal macro-/meso-pore structured polymer, i.e., poly(AAm-co-EGDMA) monolith, offer voluminous and uniform anchoring of probe molecules, i.e., (Z)-N-phenyl-2-(quinoline-4-yl-methylene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (PQMHC). The structure/surface features of the sensory system, i.e., surface area, pore dimensions, monolith framework, elemental mapping, and phase composition, were examined by p-XRD, XPS, FT-IR, HR-TEM-SAED, FE-SEM-EDAX, and BET/BJH analysis. The sensor's ion-capturing ability was established through naked eye color transition and UV-Vis-DRS response. The sensor exhibits a strong binding affinity for Hg²⁺, with a linear signal response in the concentration range of 0-200 μg/L (r² >0.999), with a detection limit of 0.33 μg/L. The analytical parameters were optimized to facilitate pH-dependent visual sensing of ultra-trace Hg²⁺ in ≤ 30 s. The sensor exhibits high chemical/physical stability characteristics, with reliable data reproducibility (RSD ≤1.94 %), while testing with natural/synthetic water and cigarette samples. The proposed work offers a cost-effective and reusable naked-eye sensory system for the selective sensing of ultra-trace Hg²⁺, with potential prospects of commercialization considering their simplicity, viability, and reliability.

A multi-responsive crown ether-based colorimetric/fluorescent chemosensor for highly selective detection of Al3+, Cu2+ and Mg2

A novel multi-response chemosensor L based on coumarin-chalcone-crown ether was designed and synthesized, which exhibited a high selectivity for the colorimetric detecting Al³⁺ and Cu²⁺ and fluorescent recognizing Al³⁺ and Mg²⁺ in ethanol. L can monitor Al³⁺ and Cu²⁺ via distinct color changes from a slight yellow to pink and to orange, respectively. The sensor L can also monitor Al³⁺ and Mg²⁺ by fluorescence emission responses at 592 nm and 547 nm with low detection limits of 0.31 μM and 0.23 μM, respectively. The selectivity of L toward Al³⁺, Cu²⁺ and Mg²⁺ was not interfered by a large number of coexisting ions and was found to be reversible. By means of spectrometric titration, Job's plot, mass spectrometry, ¹H NMR titration and IR spectroscopy analysis, it was unanimously confirmed that the sensor L had a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 with Cu²⁺ and Mg²⁺, and 1:2 with Al³⁺. The order of the stability of the complexes formed by L and Al³⁺, Cu²⁺, Mg²⁺ was as follows: L-Al³⁺ > L-Cu²⁺ > L-Mg²⁺. At the same time, some possible bonding modes and sensing mechanisms were further proposed, and the optimized structure of the sensor L and its sensing mechanism for Al³⁺, Cu²⁺ and Mg²⁺ were confirmed by the calculations of DFT/B3LYP and TD-DFT methods in a suite of Gaussian 09 programs.

Azo group(s) in selected macrocyclic compounds

Azobenzene derivatives due to their photo- and electroactive properties are an important group of compounds finding applications in diverse fields. Due to the possibility of controlling the trans-cis isomerization, azo-bearing structures are ideal building blocks for development of e.g. nanomaterials, smart polymers, molecular containers, photoswitches, and sensors. Important role play also macrocyclic compounds well known for their interesting binding properties. In this article selected macrocyclic compounds bearing azo group(s) are comprehensively described. Here, the relationship between compounds' structure and their properties (as e.g. ability to guest complexation, supramolecular structure formation, switching and motion) is reviewed.
