Changes in numbers of large ovarian follicles, plasma luteinizing hormone and estradiol-17β concentrations and egg production figures in farmed ostriches throughout the year

Low estradiol production of non-laying whooping cranes (Grus americana) is associated with the failure of small follicles to enter follicular hierarchy

For endangered species managed ex situ, production of offspring is a key factor to ensure healthy and self-sustaining populations. However, current breeding goals for the whooping crane (Grus americana) are impeded by poor reproduction. Our study sought to better understand mechanisms regulating ovarian function in ex situ managed whooping cranes and the regulatory function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in relation to follicle formation and egg laying. To characterize hormonal regulation of follicular development and ovulation, we collected weekly blood samples from six female whooping cranes during two breeding seasons, for a total of 11 reproductive cycles. The plasma samples were assessed for follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, and progesterone and the yolk precursors vitellogenin and very low-density lipoprotein. Ultrasonographic examination of the ovary was conducted at the time of blood collection. Preovulatory follicles (>12 mm) were present in laying cycles (n = 6) but absent in non-laying cycles (n = 5). The patterns of plasma hormone and yolk precursor concentrations corresponded to the stage of follicle development. Specifically, gonadotropin and yolk precursors concentrations increased as follicles transitioned from the non-yolky to yolky stage but did not increase further as the follicle advanced to preovulatory and ovulatory stages. Estrogen and progesterone concentrations increased as follicle size increased and reached peak concentrations (P < 0.05) when follicles developed to ovulatory and preovulatory stages, respectively. While overall mean circulating gonadotropin, progesterone, and yolk precursor concentrations did not differ for laying versus non-laying cycles, mean plasma estradiol in laying cycles was significantly higher than that in non-laying cycles. In summary, the findings suggested that disruption of mechanisms regulating follicle recruitment is likely responsible for the oviposition failure of the captive female whooping crane.

Ostrich ejaculate characteristics and male libido around equinox and solstice dates

The study evaluated the effect of time of the year in which changes in photoperiod occurs on ostrich semen characteristics and male libido. Semen was collected for 5 days before, on and 5 days after winter solstice (21 June 2016), spring equinox (22 September 2016), summer solstice (21 December 2016) and autumn equinox (20 March 2017) in the southern hemisphere. Semen was collected from 10 South African Black ostrich males (average age ± standard deviation; 4.5 ± 2.27 years) using the dummy female. Semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm per ejaculate, sperm motility traits, percentage of normal sperm, head and tail abnormalities and percentage of affected sperm in the hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOS) were evaluated. Male libido defined as the willingness of males to mount the dummy female was also recorded. Semen samples collected around summer solstice, spring and autumn equinox were higher in sperm concentration and sperm output compared with winter solstice (P < 0.05). Study periods did not influence semen volume, sperm motility traits, the percentage of normal sperm, head abnormalities and HOS. Tail abnormalities were higher around winter solstice than around spring equinox (P < 0.05). Male libido and the success of semen collection were significantly higher around spring equinox (P < 0.05). Changes in photoperiod in the southern hemisphere do not affect semen production in ostriches. However, high sperm output and male libido around spring equinox and summer solstice dates suggest that these periods may be preferred for semen collection for artificial insemination and storage purposes.

Drought leads to reproductive quiescence in smooth-billed anis: Phenotypic evidence for opportunistic breeding and reproductive readiness

Previous studies have suggested that the smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani, Linnaeus, 1758) breeds opportunistically following unpredictable rainfall in drought areas. To obtain proof of this phenomenon, the present study described and compared reproductive morphology and cell proliferation in the gonads of free-living smooth-billed anis during a wet season (April to June 2012) and the following dry season (July to September 2012) in a semiarid area using light and electron microscopy (transmission and scanning) and the AgNOR method. The morphological findings indicated distinct levels of reproductive activity related to seasonal changes. Morphological and morphometric analyses of the gonads confirmed intense gametogenic activity during the wet season, whereas gonadal involution occurred after rainfall ceased. The sizes of the testes and ovaries were significantly reduced compared to those in the wet season. The volumetric fraction of the seminiferous tubules in the testis decreased considerably, and no preovulatory follicles were detected in the ovary in the dry season. Moreover, the AgNOR count in the gonads revealed a significant decline in cell recruitment for gametogenesis after rainfall ceased. The histological findings indicated partial gonadal activation throughout the dry season. The analysis of the seminiferous epithelium confirmed the early testicular recrudescence phase, and sporadic postovulatory follicles indicated random ovulation during this time. The excurrent ducts and the oviduct also underwent remarkable involution in the dry season. Taken together, these findings confirm opportunistic breeding by smooth-billed anis in a semiarid habitat and suggest that gonadal recrudescence has been established as a reproductive strategy to cope with unexpected precipitation events.

Wild ostrich (Struthio camelus) ecology and physiology

This work discusses some of the important considerations of wild ostrich evolution, behaviour and ecology, as items included in ostrich production. In the process considerable research was conducted by collating information from peer-reviewed papers; textbooks; manuals; and PubMed and Agricola searches. Selected areas reviewed included activity of ostriches; feeding and water needs; sexual maturity; egg laying and natural incubation; selected physiological parameters; and predation. There is an immediate and urgent need to conserve and protect the rapidly declining populations of wild ostriches with the committed involvement of governments and funding bodies.

Wild ostrich (Struthio camelus australis) reproduction in Orbata, a nature reserve in Tunisia

The aim of the current investigation was to determine wild ostrich reproductive behaviour in Orbata Nature Reserve by observing 16 hens and 28 cocks over a seven-year period. Intense laying commenced in January, one month after the cessation of the rainy season, and 92% of the eggs were produced during the dry season (January to May, peaking in March). Over the seven years, 1,322 eggs were laid in 69 nests, which corresponded to an annual average production of 19.2 +/- 9.1 eggs/nest and 11.8 eggs/hen. 24 nests (34.78%) were non-brooded, 17 nests (24.64%) were deserted in the course of incubation, and 28 nests (40.58%) possessed hatched eggs. All the non-incubated nests had egg losses equivalent to 46.6 +/- 12.6%. Hatchability success of incubated eggs was 41.9 +/- 12.0%. Ostriches tended to dig their nests adjacent to the reserve enclosure which had direct access by road and track, the latter subjecting them to human disturbance and predation. The systematic obstruction of these nests stimulated ostriches to build additional nests within the reserve perimeter. The authors discussed the results recorded in an ostrich flock in relation to the environmental factors (climatic factors, food disponibility and predation) and suggested possibilities for improved wildlife management.

Follicle dynamics and its relation with plasma concentrations of progesterone, luteinizing hormone and estradiol during the egg-laying cycle in ostriches

The aims of this study were (i) to describe the changes in the volume of large ovarian follicles (diameter >3 cm) during the 48 h egg laying cycle in farmed ostriches, and (ii) to quantify factors affecting the volume of the largest measured follicle and the plasma concentrations of progesterone (P(4)) and estradiol-17beta (E(2)beta). In eight egg-producing birds, which all ovulated during the study period, transcutaneous ultrasound scanning and blood sampling was performed at 3 h intervals. The average volume of the total number of visualized large follicles (V(total)), the largest measured follicle (V(F1)), the second largest follicle (V(F2)) and of all follicles smaller than F2 (V(F3-Fn)) were each higher before than after oviposition. V(total), V(F2) and V(F3-Fn) nearly doubled in the 24-h period before oviposition, while V(F1) remained at an equal, rather high level until oviposition. Immediately after oviposition V(total), as well as the volume of the other follicle categories, decreased within 6 h, i.e. around the moment of ovulation. By performing statistical analysis on the basis of linear mixed-effects modelling, we quantified that: (i) V(F1) was 13.2% higher before than after oviposition and increased with 6.5% when LH increased with 1 ng/ml; (ii) P(4) levels were 93.2% higher before than after oviposition and increased with 43.1% for every 3 h closer to oviposition; when LH and E(2)beta levels and V(F1) increased with 1 ng/ml, 10 pg/ml and 10 ml, respectively, P(4) increased with 116.6%, 50% and 6.1%; and (iii) E(2)beta levels were 35.6% higher before than after oviposition, increased with 2.7% for every 3 h closer to oviposition and increased with 14.6% when LH increased with 1 ng/ml. It is concluded that during the egg-laying cycle in ostriches: (i) follicular mass, as estimated by the volume of visualized follicles larger than 3 cm, increases before and decreases after ovulation, and (ii) follicular dynamics and its accompanying endocrine plasma hormone profiles during the egg-laying cycle in ostriches follow a pattern similar to that in chickens.
