Abstract
Selection to increase body weight in poultry can hamper reproduction traits and compromise production efficiency. Thus, attention to reproduction traits is essential to improving the sustainability of breeding programs. Data from a domestic quail breeding program for meat production were used to estimate genetic parameters. We analyzed five traits: 4-week body weight, age at sexual maturity for males and females, cloacal gland area, female, and male reproductive organs weights. A multi-trait mixed model analysis with fixed effects of generation/hatch was performed, assuming environmental covariance equals zero for sex-limited traits. Heritability estimates range from low to moderate for male sexual maturity and cloacal gland area, and high for other traits. Intersexual genetic correlation for age at sexual maturity is positive, which can lead to correlated responses in the other sex. Reproductive organs weights are genetically correlated with body weight, but not significantly between sexes and nor with sexual maturity. Genetic correlations for the cloacal gland area were positive with body weight and negative with age at sexual maturity of males and females, demonstrating a potential use of this trait for selection with favorable outcomes in reproduction. The use of the cloacal gland area can be used in the same way as the scrotal circumference in mammals, improving female reproduction traits by selecting a trait recorded in males.

Abstract
The underlying mechanism behind the deteriorated laying performance of aged laying hens remains unclear. In the present study, the laying performance and gene expression along the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis were determined. A total of 300 healthy 90-wk-old ISA hens with similar body weights were classified into three groups according to their laying rate between 90 and 94 wk of age. The experimental groups were the low laying rate (<60%, LLR), high laying rate (>85%, HLR), and intermediate laying rate (60% < laying rate < 85%, MLR) hens. At the end of 94 wk of age, eight hens were randomly selected from each group for tissue collection. The gene expression of hormones and their receptors were determined in the hypothalamus, pituitary, and follicles. The results showed that the serum 17-β-estradiol had no significant difference among the three groups. However, the level of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in LLR hens was significantly decreased in the serum, small white follicles (SWF), and dominant follicles (DF, P < 0.05). Within the hypothalamus and small yellow follicles (SYF), the mRNA expression level of estrogen receptor was higher in the MLR group (P < 0.05). Compared with HLR hens, the steroid hormone-synthesis key gene, CYP19A1 was significantly decreased in the SWF of MLR-hens and DF of MLR- and LLR-hens (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression level of IGF1 receptor was higher in the hypothalamus, pituitary, SWF, large white follicles (LWF), SYF, and DF of LLR hens, compared to the HLR hens (P < 0.05). These results suggest that decreased IGF1 in serum and follicles was associated with the decreased egg production of aged laying hens. The present study provides novel insights into the endocrine changes in aged hens having different egg production.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate whether L-arginine (Arg) supplementation would influence the production performance and reproductive traits of laying hens fed low crude protein (LCP) diets. Hy-Line brown laying hens were randomly assigned to dietary treatments of control, LCP, and LCP supplemented with 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, or 0.20% Arg for 7 wk. The results showed no significant variations on the production performance, and relative organ indexes of hens. However, significant transcriptional and structural changes were evident along the HPG axis of hens. Arg supplementation linearly upregulated (P < 0.05) the gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1), and gonadotropin inhibitory hormone in the hypothalamus. The pituitary growth hormone, GnRH receptor, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSHβ) were also increased (P < 0.05). In the ovary, GnRH1, and estrogen receptor β were linearly increased by Arg, and the ovarian morphology revealed that LCP induced structural alterations which were minimally recovered by Arg supplementation. Serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and nitric oxide (NO) were increased (P < 0.05) at higher levels of Arg supplementation. Therefore, supplementing high Arg (0.20%) to LCP hens influenced the ovarian morphology and modulated the gene expression of reproductive hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis of laying hens via actions that may be related to NO and IGF-1 activity.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementing herbal active ingredients (YGF251) which can promote the secretion of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in the diet on production performance, egg quality, blood hematology, and excreta gas emission in laying hens. Methods A total of 288 ISA Brown (41-week-old) laying hens with an initial body weight of 1.83±0.68 kg were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments in a randomized block design based on body weight. Each treatment had 12 replicate cages having 6 adjacent cages per replicate (hens are kept in cages alone). The experimental period was 35 days. Dietary treatments were based on the corn-soybean meal-wheat-based basal diet and supplemented with 0.00%, 0.05%, 0.10%, or 0.15% YGF251. Results There was a linear increased egg weight in weeks 1 to 5 (p<0.05), egg mass in week 1 (p<0.05) and weeks 1 to 5 (p<0.05), egg strength on day 7 (p<0.05), 21 (p<0.01), and 35 (p<0.01), eggshell thickness on day 21 (p<0.05) and 35 (p<0.01), haugh unit on day 21 (p< 0.01) and 35 (p<0.05), serum IGF-1 concentration on day 21 (p<0.05) and 35 (p<0.01), and serum total protein concentration on day 35 (p<0.05) were observed with the supplementing YGF251 increased in the diet, while feed conversion ratio in weeks 1 to 5 (p<0.05) and excreta ammonia emission (p<0.01) decreased linearly with the dose of YGF251 increased. Conclusion Dietary supplementation of YGF251 positively affected the production performance and egg quality of laying hens through increasing serum IGF-1 concentration in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, YGF251 supplementation improved barn environment by reducing excreta noxious gas emission.

Abstract
This study aimed to screen intron 8 of the leptin receptor (LEPR) gene for polymorphisms in female Japanese quails. Two adjacent novel SNPs (A277G and A304G) were detected using PCR-SSCP and sequencing. These SNPs produced three haplotypes (AA/AA, AG/AG, and GG/GG) that were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) associated with growth and egg production traits. GG/GG haplotype-quails had significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower egg production, feed intake, growth performance, lipid profile, serum levels of sex hormones (estradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH), and ovarian expressions of survivin, FSHR, and IGF1 than other quails. However, GG/GG quails had significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher serum levels of LEP and mRNA levels of LEPR, LEP, and caspase 3 in the hypothalamus and ovaries. These higher levels of LEP/LEPR could not only reduce feed intake and body weight gain but also could induce apoptosis of ovarian cells (as indicated by lower survivin and IGF1 and higher caspase3 expression) which could inhibit the development of the follicles and the release of sex hormones with a subsequent decrease in egg production in GG/GG quails. Therefore, with these results, we suggest selecting Japanese quails with AA/AA and AG/AG haplotypes to improve the reproduction and growth performance of this flock.

Abstract
Avian plumage colors and ornaments are excellent models to study the endocrine mechanisms linking sexually selected traits and individual parameters of quality and condition. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is an evolutionarily highly conserved peptide hormone. Its regulatory role in cell proliferation and differentiation and its high sensitivity to the nutritional state of individuals suggest it as an interesting candidate, possibly providing a link between body condition and individual capacity to grow elaborated ornamental features. We investigated whether IGF-1 levels during molting correlate with the expression of multiple ornaments in a sexually dichromatic passerine species, the bearded reedling (Panurus biarmicus). We collected blood samples of males and females shortly before the molting completed and measured the size and colors of ornamental traits. Our results indicate that in males, structural plumage colors, the size of the melanin-based ornament (beard), and tail length are independent traits. IGF-1 levels are associated with the length of the tail and the expression of male structural plumage components (UV coloration), but not the melanin-based ornament. In females, plumage color and tail length were independent traits, which were not related to IGF-1 levels. To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first evidence that IGF-1 could play a role in the development of secondary sexual characters in a bird species.
Significance statement
IGF-1 is an evolutionarily highly conserved peptide hormone, which recently entered the center stage of research enquiry in evolutionary biology. It is considered as one of the key factors shaping individual life histories, but little is known about its effects on sexually selected traits. We investigated whether IGF-1 levels during molting predict the elaboration of multiple ornamental plumage traits in male and female bearded reedlings (Panurus biarmicus). Our results indicate that higher IGF-1 levels had positive effects on male structural plumage colors and tail feather length. This is the first study, bringing indication for a potential role of IGF-1 in the expression of plumage ornaments in a bird species. Our findings suggest that IGF-1 might serve as an ideal candidate to study the mechanisms linking condition and the capacity to develop sexually selected ornaments.

Abstract
Objective Perimenopause symptoms have an extremely high incidence in aging women. Development of new strategies to improve perimenopause symptoms is important topic in clinical context. Increasing studies have shown that the polysaccharides of Fructus corni (PFC) have many pharmacological activities including antiaging effects. Here, we evaluated the effects of PFC on the ovarian function in natural aging-associated perimenopause symptoms in mice. Methods Natural aging mice (16-month old) were orally administrated with PFC at 1.11 g/kg daily for 24 days with none-treated young mice (3-month old) as control. Blood samples were collected for measurements of serum levels of estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Ovaries were isolated for histopathological and molecular exanimations. Results We found that the aging mice had decreased number of growing follicles and corpus luteum in ovary, but treatment with PFC restored their amounts. Measurement of hormones showed that there were low serum levels of estradiol and progesterone but high levels of LH and FSH in aging mice; however PFC restored estradiol and progesterone levels but reduced LH and FSH levels. Immunohistochemical analysis with ovarian tissues also revealed that the expression of inhibin and insulin-like growth factor 1 was reduced in the ovary of aging mice but was restored by PFC. These data indicated that PFC regulated ovarian function-associated hormone levels in aging mice. Furthermore, there was reduced expression of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 and increased expression of proapoptotic molecules Bax and cleaved-caspase-3 in the ovary of aging mice. However, treatment with PFC upregulated Bcl-2 and downregulated Bax and cleaved-caspase-3, suggesting that PFC inhibited apoptosis of granulosa cells in the ovary of aging mice. Conclusion PFC improved the ovarian function in mice, which had high potential to be developed as a safe and effective therapeutic remedy for aging-associated perimenopause symptoms.

Abstract
Sex steroid hormones play an important role in reproductive tissue development of avian species. However, their role in Japanese quail is yet to be established. To understand the physiological role of hormones involved in the development of sperm storage tubules (SSTs) in quail, we investigated expression profiles of gonadotropin (LH-R and FSH-R) and sex steroid hormone (PR-R, ER-α and ER-β) receptors in the uterovaginal junction (UVJ) containing SSTs before and during sexual maturation i.e. four to eight weeks. Every week four birds were sacrificed to collect blood and UVJ for sex steroid hormone (progesterone and estrogen) estimation and gene expression profiling of sex steroid hormone (PR-R, ER-α and ER-β) and gonadotropin receptors (LH-R and FSH-R) using qRT-PCR. Receptor expression results showed that the expression of sex steroid receptor (PR-R, ER-α and ER-β) genes were upregulated significantly (P < .05) in SSTs with the advancement of age. The expression of gonadotropin receptors (LH-R and FSH-R) was only high at week 5 and 6 respectively. Serum hormone analysis indicated a significant (P < .05) rise in estradiol till 7th week and progesterone from 7th week onwards. These results suggest that the gonadotropin and sex steroid hormone receptors may have the role in the development and maintenance of UVJ that contains predominantly SSTs during sexual maturation.
