Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acupuncture points VG26 and K1 on the reversal of apnea and the elevation of heart and respiratory rates in neonatal dogs after birth. Sixty neonates who were apneic, bradycardic, bradypneic or dyspneic were divided into three groups: VG26 acupuncture point (GVG26), K1 acupuncture point (GK1), and control (CG). Data on heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and Apgar score were collected. The moments of analysis were after 1 min of tactile respiratory stimulus (M1); after stimulation with the acupuncture points (M2); and 10 min after the last assessment (M3). After the VG26 and K1 were used, a significant increase in HR was observed between M1 and M2, medians (25% quartile-75% quartile), respectively: GVG26 136 and 202 bpm; GK1 147 and 195 bpm; GC 168 and 187 bpm. Significant clinical improvement was also observed in RR, with a median at M1 and M2, respectively: GVG26 16 and 28 mpm; GK1 18 and 32 mpm; GC 32 and 40 mpm. For the Apgar score, significant differences were observed in the mean scores between M1 and M3 in the GVG26, GK1 and CG groups. The VG26 and K1 acupuncture points are effective in neonatal puppies, leading to improvements in the respiratory pattern and increases in the HR, RR and Apgar score, can be used in neonatal resuscitation at birth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiac biomarker concentrations are elevated in dogs with pancreatitis, but it is unknown if this is also the case for cats. METHODS The serum feline pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (fPLI) of serum samples from 60 cats was quantified using the Spec fPL assay. Serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (HST) concentrations were also measured using commercial assays. RESULTS Five of 20 cats with fPLI concentrations of 8.8 mg/L or more had above reference interval NT-proBNP concentrations. Serum NT-proBNP concentrations were not correlated with fPLI concentrations (p = 0.31) and were not different in each diagnostic category for fPLI results (p = 0.24). Serum HST concentrations were positively correlated with fPLI concentrations (r = 0.278, 95% confidence interval: 0.02‒0.50, p = 0.03). However, they were not significantly different in each diagnostic category for fPLI results (p = 0.16). LIMITATIONS Unidentified co-variates could contribute to the association between fPLI and cardiac biomarker concentrations. CONCLUSIONS Cats with elevated fPLI concentrations may have elevated cardiac biomarker concentrations.

Abstract
Neonatal puppies and kittens have physiological and anatomical characteristics that differ from those of adult animals, which impacts the interpretation of physical examination and complementary tests. The veterinarian must be familiar with the clinical, laboratory, and imaging aspects observed in neonates. It is necessary to thoroughly evaluate the litter and the mother to notice the most subtle signs of illness and advise the owner to constantly monitor the newborns, quickly sending them to specialized care. This review describes how to perform clinical assessments of newborns systematically and recognize clinical signs of neonatal changes or affections in puppies and kittens.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the incidence of myocardial injury in children with critically ill children without primary cardiac disease and the association between elevated cardiac troponin I (cTnl) and creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) concentrations and disease progression and prognosis to guide early treatment. Methods The serum cTnI and CK-MB concentrations of 292 children with critically ill children without primary cardiac disease in Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital between January 2021 and January 2024 were retrospectively analyzed within 24 h after entering the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The children were divided into normal and abnormal groups according to the myocardial marker results. The abnormal group was further divided into the cTnI-elevated, CK-MB-elevated, single-elevated (cTnI- or CK-MB-elevated) and double-elevated (cTnI- and CK-MB-elevated) groups. The differences in the clinical indicators and their relationships with prognosis for the groups were compared. Results The incidence of myocardial injury among the critically ill children without primary cardiac disease was 55.1%. The incidence of myocardial injury in children with infectious diarrhea combined with moderate and severe dehydration reached 85.19%. The pediatric critical illness score; frequency of use of vasoactive drugs; hypotension, shock, heart failure, respiratory failure, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome; and mortality indexes differed significantly for the normal and abnormal myocardial marker groups (P < 0.05). The single-elevated and normal groups only showed a difference in mortality (P < 0.017). The cTnI and CK-MB concentrations were negatively correlated with prognosis (P < 0.01). Conclusion Myocardial injury, as evidenced by elevated cardiac biomarkers, is common in critically ill children without primary cardiac illness. cTnI and CK-MB are associated with outcomes. Shock, heart failure, and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes are independently associated with simultaneous elevations of CK-MB and cTnI concentrations. Further prospective studies are needed to elucidate the clinical utility of these biomarkers.

Abstract
Echocardiography-guided percutaneous intramyocardial septal radiofrequency ablation (PIMSRA, Liwen procedure) is a novel treatment option for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). The safety and feasibility of using this procedure for cryoablation are unknown. We aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of echocardiography-guided percutaneous intramyocardial septal cryoablation (PIMSCA) for septal thickness reduction in a canine model. Eight canines underwent PIMSCA, and had electrocardiography, echocardiography(ECG), myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE), serological and pathological examinations during the preoperative, immediate postoperative, and 6-month follow-up. All eight canines underwent successful cryoablation and continued to be in sinus rhythm during ablation and without malignant arrhythmias. MCE showed that the ablation area had decreased myocardial perfusion after the procedure. Troponin I levels were significantly elevated [0.010 (0.005, 0.297) ng/mL vs. 3.122 (1.152, 7.990) ng/mL, p < 0.05)]. At 6-month follow-up after the procedure, all animals were alive, with thinning of the interventricular septum (7.26 ± 0.52 mm vs. 3.86 ± 0.29 mm, p < 0.05). Echocardiography showed no significant decrease in the left ventricular ejection fractions (LVEF) (54.32 ± 2.93 % vs. 54.70 ± 2.47 %, p > 0.05) or changes by pulse-wave Doppler E/A (1.17 ± 0.43 vs. 1.07 ± 0.43, p > 0.05), E/e' (8.09 ± 1.49 vs. 10.05 ± 2.68, p > 0.05). Pathological findings proved the effectiveness of cryoablation in myocardial tissues. We observed pericardial effusions and premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) associated with the procedure. Our findings provided preliminary evidence of the safety and feasibility of PIMSCA in reducing interventricular septum, which provides a potentially new treatment option for HOCM.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of the autonomic nervous system on cardiovascular function during the first 35 days of life in different types of delivery, using heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Thirty newborns were equally divided into two groups based on delivery type: eutocic delivery (EG) and emergency cesarean section (CG). Electrocardiographic evaluation was performed at birth (T0), 24 h postpartum (T1), and at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days of life (T2 to T6). Physical parameters, neonatal reflexes, and Apgar scores were recorded. Over 35 days, the values of the time domain indices were higher in the GE group and increased with age. In the frequency domain, the low frequency (LF) index was higher in the CG, and the opposite occurred for the high frequency (HF) index. Since the CG presented lower HRV than the EG, it was shown that the type of delivery should be considered for the assessment of autonomic nervous system activity in neonates. Thus, as predictive factors of vitality, HRV and Apgar scores can help in the face of neonatal depression, demonstrating that delivery by emergency cesarean section can predispose newborns to delays in the autonomic influence on the heart.

Abstract
Hypoglycemia is the most common metabolic alteration in the clinical routine of newborn dogs, acting as a predictor of mortality in these patients. The neonatal dog shows hepatic insufficiency and homeostatic mechanisms not yet fully developed, with limited glycogen reserves and limited capacity to perform glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. These physiological particularities make newborn dogs particularly susceptible to hypoglycemia when of fasting, even for short periods. Several maternal and neonatal factors may be related to a higher risk of developing hypoglycemia in neonates. This paper reviews glycemic homeostasis, the pathophysiology of neonatal hypoglycemia, the main causes involved and the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this condition.

Abstract
Herein, we have constructed a magnetic graphene field-effect transistor biosensor (MGFETs) for highly sensitive detection of cardiac troponin I (CTNI). Graphene films transferred to ITO conductive glass as conductive channels. CTNI aptamer was immobilized onto the graphene film via 1-pyrene-butanoic acid succinimidyl ester (PBASE) to capture CTNI. Magnetic nanobeads (MBs) modified with CTNI antibody were added to the reaction chamber to form an aptamer/CTNI/antibody/magnetic nanobeads sandwich-type complex. We found that the magnetic force exerted on the complex leads to an impedance change of the graphene film. The reason for this result is that the magnetic field exerts an influence on the MBs, causing CTNI aptamer strand to bend, resulting in a change in the distance between the double conductive layers of the graphene film surface and the test solution. With periodic sampling integration, different concentrations of CTNI can be detected with high sensitivity. Due to the stringent recognition capability and high affinity between the CTNI aptamer and CTNI, MGFETs have the potential to detect various types of proteins. Furthermore, MGFETs also have the potential to be utilized for the detection of DNA or specific cells in the future.

Abstract
Neonatal mortality in dogs reaches up to 40%. Due to the high rates, promptly detecting the causes and preventing newborns from dying are extremely important. Vitality evaluation, blood parameters, and the degree of meconium staining on the skin are valuable resources in canine perinatology. In this study, 435 puppies from 85 bitches close to parturition were recruited and divided into four quartiles according to the puppy's birth weight: Q1 (127-200 g) n = 110 puppies, Q2 (201-269 g) n = 108 puppies, Q3 (270-388 g) n = 108 puppies, and Q4 (389-464 g) n = 109 puppies. This experimental article aimed to report the effect of birth weight on the blood profile variables, the vitality of newborn puppies, and the meconium staining degree, integrating these three aspects. It was concluded that the weight of newborns was correlated with the degree of meconium staining, presenting more cases of severe meconium staining in the puppies of the highest birth weight group. The weight of the newborns was correlated with a higher number of stillbirths and alterations in the blood variables, showing the most severe cases of metabolic acidosis, hypoxia, and hypoglycemia in the puppies of the Q4 quartile. On the contrary, no statistically significant correlations were found between the weight of newborns and vitality. Nevertheless, the analysis of the results showed that the most vigorous puppies were found at Q1; however, at minute 60 after birth (AB), all the puppies in the four quartiles standardized their vitality scores.

Abstract
The importance and implications of small animal neonatology were underestimated until recent times. Despite the recent increasing interest for this branch of veterinary medicine, however, perinatal mortality rates in canine and feline species remain high, representing an important challenge for the clinician. In this perspective, the prompt identification of newborns requiring additional and tailored assistance becomes a key to reduce the perinatal losses in small animals. To achieve this goal, clinical and laboratory findings must be carefully evaluated. This paper focuses on biochemical parameters and their reported influence on neonatal survival, guiding through the evaluation of canine and feline newborn laboratory analyses, with a thorough discussion about the use of different biological material in these subjects. Beside blood, other biological material, such as urines and fetal fluids proved to be interesting for the identification of possible prognostic markers, thanks also to their easy and safe collection. However, the correct reading-through the results must consider many variables such as type of delivery, anesthesia protocol in case of Caesarean section, age of the newborn at samples collection, and for blood analysis, also the type of blood, site of collection, modality of collection and storage must be considered. Notwithstanding the recent progress in literature, for most of the parameters more research is needed to define cut-off values with certainty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Methamphetamine (MA) abuse is a serious social problem worldwide. Cardiovascular complications were the second leading cause of death among MA abusers. We aimed to clarify the effects of MA on myocardial injury, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in myocardial cells and to explore the potential mechanism of nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in MA-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis. METHODS An acute cardiac toxicity model of MA was established by intraperitoneal injection of MA (2 mg/kg) for 5 days. Nrf2 activation (by sulforaphane (SFN) 1 h before MA injection) and Nrf2 gene knockout were performed to explore the regulatory effects of Nrf2 on cardiac toxicity. RESULTS The protein expressions of Nrf2 (p < .001) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) were increased (p < .01), suggesting that MA activated the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. In the MA group, cardiac injury score (p < .001) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) protein expression increased (p < .01). Malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased (p < .001), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased (p < .05). Protein expressions of Caspase-3 (p < .001) and Bax (p < .001) increased, and Bcl-2 decreased (p < .001) as well. These changes were reversed by activation of Nrf2 but became more pronounced after Nrf2 knockout, suggested that the activation and knockout of Nrf2 attenuated and aggravated MA-induced myocardial injury, oxidative stress and apoptosis in myocardial cells, respectively. CONCLUSIONS MA administration induced myocardial injury, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in mice. Nrf2 attenuated MA-induced myocardial injury by regulating oxidative stress and apoptosis, thus playing a protective role.

Abstract
The productivity of kennels and catteries is directly linked to maternal prolificacy and neonatal survival. During the neonatal period, mortality is high, not only due to environmental factors after birth but also with regard to gestational fetal life, complications during delivery, and management errors. Neonatology is an area of veterinary medicine where having a strong knowledge base of applied physiology and common clinical presentations for newborns can often favor better outcomes and greater neonatal survival. The teaching of animal theriogenology topics, particularly neonatal medicine, in the veterinary curriculum has evolved significantly in recent years. It is essential that the veterinarian understands the maternal and neonatal particularities and the main aspects involved in the handling of puppies and kittens for the instruction of the correct handling to the breeders and better medical conduct. The breeder of dogs and cats, experienced or not, must count on the help of a veterinarian in their breeding. Proper management, constant monitoring of the litter, and prompt assistance are the keys to successful breeding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence and clinical importance of cardiac abnormalities in dogs with acute pancreatitis (AP) is unknown. ANIMALS Twelve dogs with AP and 60 archived serum samples from dogs with suspected AP. METHODS Two-phase study. PHASE I Analysis of archived serum samples from dogs with clinical signs of AP and high Spec cPL concentrations. High sensitivity troponin I (TnIH) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentrations were measured in achieved serum samples. PHASE II Prospective observational study. Dogs with AP underwent echocardiography and Holter monitoring. Serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and plasma NT-proBNP concentrations were measured. Previously described disease severity indices were calculated for each dog. RESULTS Phase I: 41 of 60 dogs suspected of having AP had abnormally high TnIH concentrations and 13 of 60 had abnormally high serum NT-proBNP concentrations. Higher TnIH concentrations were observed in dogs with Spec cPL concentration >2000 μg/L as compared to those with concentrations of 1000-2000 μg/L. PHASE II 11 of 12 dogs diagnosed with pancreatitis had abnormal cTnI concentrations (median: 0.384 ng/mL, range: 0.041-2.966 ng/mL, RI: ≤0.06 ng/mL) and 7 of 12 dogs had plasma NT-proBNP concentrations above the reference interval (median: 971 pmol/L, range: 250-2215 pmol/L, RI: ≤900 pmol/L). Supraventricular and ventricular ectopic beats occurred in 3 dogs. Echocardiographic abnormalities were detected in 5 dogs. Cardiovascular variables were not associated with indices of disease severity. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Myocardial injury is common in dogs with AP, but clinical consequences appeared to be uncommon in our small cohort. Cardiac biomarkers should be interpreted with caution in dogs with AP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to perform neonatal clinical assessments at birth to identify newborn kittens at risk according to type of delivery, thus allowing immediate intervention and increasing their chances of survival. METHODS This study compared Apgar scores, reflexes and clinical parameters (temperature, weight, blood glucose and peripheral oxygen saturation [SpO2]) between eutocic neonates and those delivered by emergency cesarean section. The animals were evaluated at birth and after 10 and 60 mins. RESULTS Thirty-two neonates were evaluated, with 19 animals in the eutocic group (EG) and 13 animals in the cesarean group (CG). When comparing groups, CG neonates had significantly lower Apgar scores (P <0.0001), lower SpO2 (P = 0.0535), higher blood glucose (P = 0.0009), reduced reflexes (P <0.0001) and lower respiratory rates (P <0.0001) at birth and after 10 and 60 mins than EG neonates. Apgar scores positively correlated with parameters such as heart rate, reflex score, SpO2 and weight. The mortality rate in evaluated newborns was 15.6% (5/32). The early mortality rate (0-2 days old) was 80% (4/5) and the late mortality rate (3-30 days old) was 20% (1/5). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This study showed lower vitality in cats delivered by emergency cesarean section than in those delivered through eutocic birth. In general, neonates delivered by cesarean section have greater depression and low vitality at birth and may require advanced resuscitation procedures. The evaluations carried out in this study identified newborns with low vitality and those requiring advanced resuscitation, thus allowing immediate intervention. Apgar and reflex scores for feline neonates were suggested. Newborn-specific clinical assessment with these feline vitality scores allows the identification of at-risk neonates. Care immediately after birth increases the chance of survival among these patients.
