Abstract
Purpose: To investigate differences in red blood cell (RBC) deformability between birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR) subjects and matched controls, and to postulate its relationship with lack of vascular occlusion in BCR. Methods: In a single center, prospective, non-randomized mechanistic study, blood samples were collected from eight healthy controls and nine BCR patients, and subjected to biochemical and hematological tests, as well as RBC indices assessment using dual-beam optical tweezers. Results: The mean age of the controls was 52.37 ± 10.70 years and BCR patients was 53.44 ± 12.39 years. Initial cell size (Io) for the controls was 8.48 ± 0.25 μm and 8.87 ± 0.31 μm for BCR RBCs (p = 0.014). The deformability index (DI) for the controls was 0.066 ± 0.02 and that for BCR RBCs was 0.063 ± 0.03 (p = 0.441). Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference in DI between RBCs from BCR and healthy controls. This may explain the rare occurrence of retinal vascular occlusion despite the underlying vasculitic pathophysiology of BCR.

Abstract
Purpose Changes in concentrations of acute phase proteins in the serum of patients might be significant in the pathogenesis of Behçet disease. This report investigates the association between ocular disease activity and serum haptoglobin levels in patients with Behçet disease, and summarizes the current understanding of the correlation between acute phase proteins and Behçet disease based on both personal studies and data from the literature. Methods Thirty patients with Behçet disease with ocular involvement and 15 healthy subjects were included in the study. Of the 30 patients, 14 had acute uveitis and 16 had inactive ocular involvement at the time of enrollment. Results There was a significant difference in haptoglobin levels between the patients with active ocular disease and controls (p=0.0005). There was also a significant difference in haptoglobin levels between the patients with inactive ocular disease and control subjects (p<0.0001). However, no significant difference was observed among patients with active versus inactive uveitis with regard to serum haptoglobin levels. Conclusions Higher serum haptoglobin levels in patients with Behçet disease compared to control subjects were obtained. However, elevated serum haptoglobin levels do not seem to be a risk factor for uveitis activity. Behçet disease is generally diagnosed by physical examinations and no laboratory marker has been widely accepted for follow-up of disease activity.

Abstract
Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology characterized by recurrent oral, genital aphthous ulcerations, uveitis, skin lesions and other multisystem affections associated with vasculitis. Different types of vessels, predominantly veins, can be affected in BD. The frequency of vascular lesions in BD, such as superficial and deep venous thromboses, arterial aneurysms and occlusions, ranges between 7-29%. In this review, various factors of thrombogenesis in BD, particularly pro- and antithrombotic endothelial and non-endothelial factors, factors of coagulation, platelet activation and rheological changes are presented and discussed from positions of Virchow's triad of venous thrombosis. Despite advances in understanding of thrombogenesis in BD, still many issues of diagnosis and targeted preventive and therapeutic measures remain unresolved. Further studies are needed to clarify the pathobiology of BD-related thrombosis and to provide the clinicians with recommendations over the utility, safety and effectiveness of the antithrombotic therapy in BD.

Abstract
Inflammatory processes and psychological states may mutually enhance each other as well as contribute to haemorheological alterations. The objective of the recent study was to determine blood rheological profile in patients with AD at different clinical stages. Blood rheology, as estimated by blood viscosity as well as deformability (elongation index-EI) and aggregation of erythrocytes (aggregation half time (AT1/2)--expressing the kinetic aspects and syllectogram amplitude (AMP)--representing total aggregation extent) were measured in 25 female AD patients, who showed clinical features of mild to severe AD and in 14 healthy subjects. There were no significant differences in blood rheological properties between patients with mild AD and the controls. A significant decrease in erythrocytes AT1/2 and AMP as well as EI were observed in severe AD patients as compared to other groups. Whole blood and plasma viscosity were similar in all groups. Both erythrocytes deformability and aggregation may be affected by pathophysiological processes associated with AD. Only AD patients with severe skin changes showed increased aggregability and decreased deformability of erythrocytes, suggesting that the phenomenon might be related to the disease activity.

Abstract
Behçet's disease/syndrome (BD) continues being aloof in his etiopathogenesis and very complex in its clinical manifestations. BD generates a good amount of scientific articles. For example, a simple search in PubMed sample that in the last 5 years has been published 1394 articles, 159 of them revisions. In addition to the basic studies on etiopahtogenesis and disease mechanisms, the diverse clinical manifestations and their treatments, also the own definition of the disease, its classification and the criteria of classification and diagnosis are debate source. In this article we reviewed some aspects in discussin as well as the last therapeutic alternatives and the situation of the EB in Spain.
