Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides are used extensively in many pest control schemes across the globe; but little is known about their impacts on free-grazing domestic birds and the quality of meat or eggs produced from such birds. This study assessed the pollution and partitioning of neonicotinoids in serum and eggs of free-grazing ducks from 5 provinces of Thailand and elucidated the associated human health implications. Biological samples (duck serum, egg albumins, and egg yolks) and environmental samples (soil, water, feed) were collected from 9 duck farms in Thailand and subjected to LC/MS/MS analysis. Out of 6 neonicotinoid compounds targeted, five were detected in duck serum. Imidacloprid had the greatest median concentration of 1.4 ng/mL and the highest detection frequency (df) of 85.8 % in the ducks' serum, followed by acetamiprid (median concentration = 0.4 ng/mL; df = 2.8 %), clothianidin (median concentration = 0.2 ng/mL; df = 9.4 %) or thiamethoxam (median concentration = 0.2 ng/mL; df = 7.5 %) and dinotefuran (only one sample was contaminated with 6.3 ng/mL of dinotefuran). The neonicotinoids were similarly detected in soil, water, and feed samples obtained from the duck farms, suggesting that the ducks were exposed to the insecticides from the nearby agricultural fields. The neonicotinoid compounds selectively accumulated in the albumin of duck eggs compared to yolk. The median concentration ratios of albumin to yolk obtained for imidacloprid, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, clothianidin, and acetamiprid were 694, 463, 458, 382, and 263, respectively. However, upon human health risk analysis, levels of neonicotinoids detected in duck eggs were not found to present any appreciable risks to duck egg consumers.

Abstract
Nitenpyram (neonicotinoid insecticide) is commonly used for crop protection from pests. Currently, due to its widespread use, the nitenpyram accumulation in the environment is anticipated to be high. Hence, the removal of nitenpyram residue from the environment is essential. However, the biodegradation of nitenpyram by endophytes is still unreported. Therefore, we aimed to isolate and identify a bacterial strain capable of degrading nitenpyram. We isolated approximately 300 endophytic strains from Brassica rapa var. perviridis that had been exposed to different neonicotinoid insecticides. After 14 days of incubation, a bacterial strain, NIT-2, with nitenpyram degradation capability (approximately 65%) was found. Via 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the strain was identified as Bacillus thuringiensis. In addition, metabolites, 2-[N-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-ethyl]amino-2-methyliminoacetic acid, N-(6-chloro-3-pyridilmethyl)-N-ethyl-N-methylformamidine (CPMF), and N-(6-chloro-3-pyridilmethyl)-N-ethylformamide (CPF), were identified during the degradation. Moreover, CPMF and CPF were further degraded 71% and 18%, respectively by NIT-2. Thus, B. thuringiensis strain NIT-2 is the first reported endophytic bacterium capable of degrading nitenpyram.

Abstract
Neonicotinoids, widely used on farmland, are ubiquitous in food; however, their distribution among various crops and associated exposure risks at the provincial level in China remain unclear. We collected 19 types of crop samples (fruits, vegetables, and tea) from farmland in nine prefectural cities in Zhejiang Province, China. We analyzed nine commonly used neonicotinoids in the edible portions of these crops. A notable detection rate (42.1 %-82.9 %) and high residual neonicotinoid concentrations (278 ± 357 ng/g) were observed. Tea exhibited the highest residue, followed by fruits, and vegetables showed the lowest (P < 0.05). Neonicotinoid ratios in crops to soil (R_C/S) and soil to water (R_S/W) were defined to discern insecticide distribution across different environments. Increased water solubility leads to increased migration of neonicotinoids (R_S/W) from agricultural soils to water through runoff, thereby increasing the relative contribution of nitenpyram and dinotefuran in water. In comparison with other studied compounds, all crops demonstrated the strongest soil uptake of thiamethoxam, denoted by the highest R_C/S value. Elevated R_C/S values in tea, pickled cabbage, and celery suggest increased susceptibility of these crops to neonicotinoid absorption from the soil (P < 0.05). Estimated dietary intake for teenagers, adults and elders was 8.9 ± 0.5, 8.9 ± 0.6, and 8.8 ± 0.3 μg/kg/d, respectively, below the reference dose (57 μg/kg/d). Teenagers, compared to adults and elders, exhibited significantly higher neonicotinoid exposure through fruit consumption, emphasizing the need for increased attention to neonicotinoid exposure among vulnerable populations.

Abstract
The ingestion of contaminated tea involves the risk of human exposure to residues of neonicotinoids (NEOs). Nevertheless, there is little empirical research about this topic; to bridge the current knowledge gap, we collected 220 samples of various tea products from four geographical areas in China, including unfermented green tea, semi-fermented white tea and oolong tea, completely fermented black tea, and post-fermented dark tea. A total of six NEOs were detected from the tea leaves and infusions, namely, dinotefuran (DIN), thiamethoxam (THM), clothianidin (CLO), imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), and thiacloprid (THI). The detection frequencies (DFs) and concentrations of all target NEOs were relatively high across the investigated tea samples, and the DIN, IMI and ACE residues measured in some samples exceeded the maximum residue level (MRL) standards for the European Union. Samples representing the Jiangnan area exhibited greater levels of total target NEOs (∑6NEOs) than samples representing the Jiangbei area (p < 0.001). Moreover, dark tea samples were found to have far higher levels of NEO residues than green (p < 0.001), white (p < 0.05), or oolong (p < 0.001) samples. The health risks associated with exposure to NEO residues via tea were small for both children and adults in terms of acute, chronic, and cumulative dietary exposure risk assessments. The transfer rates (TRs) of NEOs observed in white, black, and dark tea infusions gradually decreased after the third brewing time. As such, it is recommended to only consume tea that has been brewed at least three times. The presented results not only describe the extent of NEO contamination in Chinese tea leaves and infusions, but also provide tea drinking guidelines for consumers.

Abstract
Due to its rich health benefits and unique cultural charm, tea drinking is increasingly popular with the public in modern society. The safety of tea is the top priority that affects the development of tea industry and the health of consumers. During the process of tea growth, pesticides are used to prevent the invasion of pests and diseases with maintaining high quality and stable yield. Because hot water brewing is the traditional way of tea consumption, water is the main carrier for pesticide residues in tea into human body accompanied by potential risks. In this review, pesticides used in tea gardens are divided into two categories according to their solubility, among which water-soluble pesticides pose a greater risk. We summarized the methods of the sample pretreatment and detection of pesticide residues and expounded the migration patterns and influencing factors of tea throughout the process of growth, processing, storage, and consumption. Moreover, the toxicity and safety of pesticide residues and diseases caused by human intake were analyzed. The risk assessment and traceability of pesticide residues in tea were carried out, and potential eco-friendly improvement strategies were proposed. The review is expected to provide a valuable reference for reducing risks of pesticide residues in tea and ensuring the safety of tea consumption.

Abstract
The application of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) has increased dramatically in the world since being introduced in 1990s, yet the extent of human exposure and potential health risk is not fully unraveled. In this study, the residues were analyzed of 16 NEOs and their metabolites in 205 commercial cow milk samples circulating in Chinese market. All the milk samples contained at least one quantified NEO, and over 90% of samples contained a cocktail of NEOs. Acetamiprid, N-desmethyl acetamiprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidaclothiz were the most commonly detected analytes with detection frequencies of 50-88% and medians of 0.011-0.038 ng/mL in milk. Geographical origin was an important factor to influence abundances and levels of NEOs contamination in milk. Chinese local milk bore a significant higher risk from NEOs contamination than the imported milk. In China, the northwest presented the greatest concentrations of the insecticides relative to the north or south. Organic farming, ultra heat treatment and skimming could significantly reduce levels of NEOs contamination in milk. A relative potency factor method was used to evaluate estimated daily intake of NEO insecticides, and found the children had 3.5-5 times higher exposed risk via milk ingestion than the adults. The high frequency of NEOs detection in milk offers us a snapshot of the ubiquity of NEOs in milk, with possible health implications especially for children.

Abstract
Over the last decade, the consumption of tea and herbal tea has gained more and more popularity across the globe, but the potential presence of chemical contaminants (e.g. pesticides, trace elements, synthetic drugs) may raise health concerns. This study analysed selected teas available in Belgian retail stores and performed a risk assessment for these samples. No chemical adulteration could be detected in dry tea material. More than 38% of the dry leaves samples contained at least one pesticide exceeding the maximal residue level (MRL) set by the EU. However, further risk assessment, based on the values of pesticide residues and the toxic trace elements encountered in the brew, demonstrate that the consumption of these teas will not give rise to health concerns. Nonetheless, attention should be given to the leaching potential of nickel from teas and the presence of arsenic in brews from algae containing teas.

Abstract
The burden of neonicotinoid insecticides (neonics) in humans has attracted widespread attention in recent years due to the potential adverse effects. Nonetheless, information on the partitioning behavior and distribution in human blood is still limited. Herein, we obtained 115 adult whole blood and plasma specimens for analysis of eight neonics to better understand neonics' partitioning and distribution in human blood. At least one neonic was detected in 49.6% of the red blood cells and 55.7% of the plasma. In red blood cells, the highest detection rate and concentration was thiamethoxam (THI) with 19.1% and 3832 ng/L, respectively. Imidacloprid had the highest detection rate with 26.1% in the plasma. The mass fraction (Fp) of neonics detected indicates that thiacloprid, imidacloprid, and dinotefuran are mostly resided in plasma upon entering into human blood, while thiamethoxam is mostly present in red blood cells. The distribution of clothianidin and acetamiprid between plasma and red blood cells is similar. The mass fraction (Fp) values for THI were significantly different compared to other neonics, and the effect of age and gender on THI partitioning concluded that there may not be significant variability in the distribution of THI in the sampled population. Overall, this study was the first to investigate neonics residuals in red blood cells and provided fundamental information on the partitioning and distribution of neonics in human blood.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are a popular class of insecticides used in various pest management regimens worldwide. Biomonitoring studies continuously report high exposure rates of NNIs in various human populations across the globe. Yet, there is no validated countermeasure for combating the recent exponential rise in NNI exposure rates observed in human populations. The current study assessed the impacts of organic dietary interventions on NNI exposure rates in a Japanese population. A total of 103 volunteers were recruited into the study. Subjects were either served with Organic diets for 5 and 30 days or conventional diets. A total of 919 repeated urine samples were collected from the participants and then subjected to LC-MS/MS analysis to determine urinary concentrations of 7 NNIs parent compounds and an NNI metabolite. Eight NNIs were detected; with a decreasing detection frequency (%Dfs) pattern; desmethyl-acetamiprid (dm-ACE) (64.96%) > dinotefuran (52.12%), imidacloprid (39.61%) > clothianidin (33.95%) > thiamethoxam (28.51%) > acetamiprid (12.62%) > nitenpyram (5.33%) > thiacloprid (2.83%). Dinotefuran, dm-ACE, and clothianidin recorded the highest concentrations in the subjects. The %Df of NNIs in the 5-days or 30-days organic diet group were lower than those of the conventional diet consumers. The organic diet group showed lower rates of multiple NNI exposures than those of the conventional diet consumers. The mean and median cumulative levels of NNIs (median IMIeq) were significantly lower in the organic diet group than the conventional diet group (p < 0.0001). The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of NNIs were higher in adults than children, but less than 1% of NNI cRfDs, except for clothianidin, which exhibited a %cRfD of 1.32 in children. Compared to the conventional diet group, the 5- and 30-day organic dietary intervention showed drastic reductions in NNI EDIs. Findings from the present study give credence to organic dietary interventions as potential ameliorative strategies for NNI exposure rates in human populations.
