Evaluating the Relationship Between Burnout Levels and Compassion Fatigue, Emotional Intelligence, and Communication Skills of Organ Transplant Coordinators

"No One Seems to See Us, and They Look at Us as Worthless Colleagues": Challenges Experienced by Iranian Transplant Nurse Coordinators-A Qualitative Study

BACKGROUND

Transplant nurse coordinators have close and long-term interactions with organ donor families throughout the organ donation process. Due to the responsibilities and high sensitivity of organ transplant coordination, transplant nurse coordinators face several stressful challenges. This study aimed to explore the challenges faced by Iranian transplant nurse coordinators.

METHODS

This is a qualitative study conducted using qualitative content analysis. This study was conducted from February to September 2023. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with a total of 14 transplant nurse coordinators. Data were analyzed using conventional qualitative content analysis proposed by Graneheim and Lundman.

RESULTS

"Challenges of living as a transplant nurse coordinator" was identified as the main category, the subcategories of which included "consent-obtaining obstacles," "exposure to violence," "compassion fatigue," "obsessive thoughts," "work-life imbalance," and "hardworking coordinators in the shadow."

CONCLUSIONS

The challenges experienced by transplant nurse coordinators can lead to several negative consequences, including job burnout and turnover, reduced quality of family and marital life, additional healthcare costs, and reduced organ donation rate. To address these challenges, cultivating a culture of organ donation in society could involve public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. Improving the working conditions and occupational incentives could include reducing work hours, providing psychological support, and increasing salaries. Implementing psychological interventions could involve regular counseling sessions and stress management programs. These measures can effectively reduce the challenges transplant nurse coordinators face and improve their overall well-being and job satisfaction.

Impact of emotional intelligence on academic burnout among master students in pedagogy of nursing sciences and health techniques in Morocco, 2019: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Burnout is spreading to the student population and becoming a threat of global concern. The aim of our research is to determine the prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with the academic burnout of master students in the Pedagogy of Nursing and Health Technology in Morocco and to discover the impact of these students' emotional intelligence on their academic burnout.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

This is a descriptive, cross-sectional analytical study conducted among students in the Pedagogy of Nursing and Health Technology in Morocco out of a total of 108 students of different ages and genders. A questionnaire is used for the collection of data pertaining to students. For each dependent variable, a bivariate analysis was conducted, and the independent variables associated with it were included in a multivariate model.

RESULTS

The prevalence of academic burnout is estimated at 36.1% among the studied populations (exhaustion 19.4%, cynicism 21.3%, and reduced efficacy 2.8%). 53.7% of students have a high level of emotional intelligence. Multivariate analysis showed that exhaustion is significantly associated with gender (aOR = 3.4, 95% CI = 1.0-11.7, P = 0.04), age (aOR = 0.2, 95% CI = 0.0-0.8, P = 0.02) and cynicism was associated with sports activity (aOR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.0-8.1, P = 0.038). The emotional intelligence is independent predictor of exhaustion, but it has a positive impact on cynicism (aOR = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.0-1.09, P = 0,027) and a negative impact on reduced efficacy (aOR = 0.8, 95% CI = 0.6-0.9, P = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study uncover the prevalence of the phenomenon of burnout among students and the importance of integrating emotional education into health training.

Burnout, mental health symptoms, and empathy in healthcare workers who care for children treated in a liver transplant center

OBJECTIVE

The healthcare workers in pediatric liver transplantation units are exposed to various stresses; however, their burnout has not been clarified yet. This study aimed to determine burnout, psychological symptoms and empathy levels in healthcare workers, to examine the relationship between these variables and to investigate the predictors of burnout.

METHOD

This cross-sectional study was conducted on healthcare workers in Turgut Özal Medical Center Pediatric Liver Transplant Institute. The participants filled out a questionnaire that investigating demographic and occupational characteristics, and including questions from Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Brief Symptom Inventory.

RESULTS

Fifty healthcare workers participated in the study. Based on moderate and higher severity scores, 48% of the participants were emotionally exhausted, 22% of them were depersonalized. All of them had a high perception of personal accomplishment. There was a correlation between psychological symptoms level and emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment as well as empathy and personal accomplishment. Not choosing the profession and the department willingly, age, education level, marital status, duration of profession, unit, not receiving in-service training, empathy, depressive symptoms and hostility scores predicted different aspects of burnout.

CONCLUSION

Considering that burnout and psychological stress lead to reduced professional abilities and the development of serious complications, the results obtained can guide managers on the measures to be taken.

Burnout and compassion fatigue among organ and tissue donation coordinators: a scoping review

OBJECTIVES

To collate and synthesise available literature on burnout and compassion fatigue (CF) among organ and tissue donation coordinators (OTDCs) and to respond to the research question: what is known about burnout and CF among OTDCs worldwide?

DESIGN

Scoping review using Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews.

DATA SOURCES

Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, LILACS, PTSpubs and grey literature (ResearchGate, OpenGrey, Organ Donation Organization (ODO) websites, open access theses and dissertations) up to April 2020.

STUDY SELECTION

Studies reporting aspects of burnout and CF among OTDCs, including risk and protective factors.

DATA EXTRACTION

Two reviewers independently screened the studies for eligibility and extracted data from chosen sources using a data extraction tool developed for this study; NVIVO was used to perform a qualitative directed content analysis.

RESULTS

The searches yielded 741 potentially relevant records, of which 29 met the inclusion criteria. The majority of articles were from the USA (n=7, 24%), Canada (n=6, 21%) and Brazil (n=6, 21%), published between 2013 and 2020 (n=13, 45%) in transplant journals (n=11, 38%) and used a qualitative design approach (n=12, 41%). In the thematic analysis, we classified the articles into five categories: (1) burnout characteristics, (2) CF characteristics, (3) coping strategies, (4) protective factors and (5) ambivalence.

CONCLUSION

We identified aspects of burnout and CF among OTDCs, including defining characteristics, demographic predispositions, protective factors, coping strategies, precursors, consequences and personal ambivalences. Researchers described burnout and CF characteristics but did not use consistent terms when referring to CF and burnout, which may have hindered the identification of all relevant sources. This gap should be addressed by the application of consistent terminology, systematic approaches and appropriate research methods that combine quantitative and qualitative investigation to examine the underlying reasons for the development of burnout and CF among OTDCs.
