Node formation mechanisms in acoustofluidic capillary bridges

Using acoustofluidic channels formed by capillary bridges two models are developed to describe nodes formed by leaky and by evanescent waves. The liquid channel held between a microscope slide (waveguide) and a strip of polystyrene film (fluid guide) avoids solid-sidewall interactions. With this simplification, our experimental and numerical study showed that waves emitted from a single plane surface, interfere and form the nodes without any resonance in the fluid. Both models pay particular attention to tensor elements normal to the solid-liquid interfaces they find that; initially nodes form in the solid and the node pattern is replicated by waves emitted into the fluid from antinodes in the stress. At fluids depths near half an acoustic wavelength, most nodes are formed by leaky waves. In the glass, water-loading reduces node-node separation and forms an overlay type waveguide which aligns the nodes predominantly along the channel. One new practical insight is that node separation can be controlled by water depth. At 0.2 mm water depths (which are smaller than a ¼ wavelength) nodes form from evanescent waves. Here a suspension of yeast cells formed a pattern of small dot-like clumps of cells on the surface of the polystyrene film. We found the same pattern in sound intensity normal, and close, to the water-polystyrene interface. The capillary bridge channel developed for this study is simple, low-cost, and could be developed for filtration, separation, or patterning of biological species in rapid immuno-sensing applications.

Selective particle separation on centimeter scale using a dual frequency dynamic acoustic field

This study investigated the application of dual-frequency type dynamic acoustic fields for size-selective particle separation on centimeter scale in a continuous flow. The 3D-printed X-shaped prototype has two inlets and two outlets. The dynamic acoustic field is generated by two transducers positioned under an angle of 60^° and operating at slightly different frequencies. The acoustic reflections are eliminated by placing sound-absorbing material inside the prototype and the non-resonant operation is confirmed by the electrical admittance measurements. Numerical calculations suggested that pressure generated by each transducer does not need to have equal amplitude. Computer simulations and lab experiments were carried out for different frequency differences and flow rates. The results demonstrated the ability of dual-frequency dynamic acoustic fields for size-selective particle filtration on centimeter scale, with a total flow rate up to.1Lh^-1.

Continuous Ultrasonic Reactors: Design, Mechanism and Application

Ultrasonic small scale flow reactors have found increasing popularity among researchers as they serve as a very useful platform for studying and controlling ultrasound mechanisms and effects. This has led to the use of these reactors for not only research purposes, but also various applications in biological, pharmaceutical and chemical processes mostly on laboratory and, in some cases, pilot scale. This review summarizes the state of the art of ultrasonic flow reactors and provides a guideline towards their design, characterization and application. Particular examples for ultrasound enhanced multiphase processes, spanning from immiscible fluid-fluid to fluid-solid systems, are provided. To conclude, challenges such as reactor efficiency and scalability are addressed.

Synergistic effects of the alternating application of low and high frequency ultrasound for particle synthesis in microreactors

Ultrasound (US) is a promising method to address clogging and mixing issues in microreactors (MR). So far, low frequency US (LFUS), pulsed LFUS and high frequency US (HFUS) have been used independently in MR for particle synthesis to achieve narrow particle size distributions (PSD). In this work, we critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of each US application method for the case study of calcium carbonate synthesis in an ultrasonic microreactor (USMR) setup operating at both LFUS (61.7 kHz, 8 W) and HFUS (1.24 MHz, 1.6 W). Furthermore, we have developed a novel approach to switch between LFUS and HFUS in an alternating manner, allowing us to quantify the synergistic effect of performing particle synthesis under two different US conditions. The reactor was fabricated by gluing a piezoelectric plate transducer to a silicon microfluidic chip. The results show that independently applying HFUS and LFUS produces a narrower PSD compared to silent conditions. However, at lower flow rates HFUS leads to agglomerate formation, while the reaction conversion is not enhanced due to weak mixing effects. LFUS on the other hand eliminates particle agglomerates and increases the conversion due to the strong cavitation effect. However, the required larger power input leads to a steep temperature rise in the reactor and the risk of reactor damage for long-term operation. While pulsed LFUS reduces the temperature rise, this application mode leads again to the formation of particle agglomerates, especially at low LFUS percentage. The proposed application mode of switching between LFUS and HFUS is proven to combine the advantages of both LFUS and HFUS, and results in particles with a unimodal narrow PSD (one order of magnitude reduction in the average size and span compared to silent conditions) and negligible rise of the reactor temperature.

Establishment of a basic medical science system for Traditional Chinese medicine education: A suggestion based on the experience of BIOCERAMIC technology

The aim of this review study is to present an integrated and systematic approach to meridian channels and Ashi acupuncture points based on scientific evidence. We herein establish a framework of basic medical science to explain meridian channels based on the(1) Concepts of Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) approach using physics and physiology: (i) the physical theory of pulse sound and cardiovascular physiology: resonance of harmonic sounds and the specific frequencies arising from heartbeats, which form pathways of different meridian channels to enhance microcirculation; (ii) standing wave hypothesis to explain meridian channels; (iii) Ashi acupuncture or trigger points caused by ischemia due to inappropriate harmonic resonance of standing waves; and (2)the TCM concept strengthened by BIOCERAMIC technology: (i) ‘wave-induced flow characteristics of meridians’; (ii) the ‘Propagated sensation along meridian’ phenomenon; (iii) clinical observations of the different chief complaints of candidates in which sensation was induced along specific meridian channels; (iv) generates ‘biofield’ phenomenon composed of virtual channels of interconnecting ‘feet-hands-ears’ to different internal organs/tissues that support the principles of reflexology.
