Wave propagation in immersed waveguide with radial inhomogeneity

In this paper, we investigate wave propagation in an inhomogeneous cylindrical waveguide immersed in a medium. To model external medium influence, we use the impedance boundary conditions on the waveguide outer wall. Some structural properties of the dispersion set are studied. To treat the problem of the waveguide forced oscillations, we solve boundary value problems for the first order vector differential equation sequentially in the Fourier transform space and then build the actual space on the basis of the residue theory. The residues for the numerically given function with the first order poles were found by considering auxiliary boundary value problems. The wave fields on the waveguide internal wall are obtained for different inhomogeneity laws and boundary conditions.

Experimental Investigation on Choosing a Proper Sensor System for Guided Waves to Check the Integrity of Seven-Wire Steel Strands

Multiple wire twisted steel strands are commonly used to hoist elevators, concrete structures, etc. Due to frequent and long-time usage, the steel strands are subjected to corrosion, overloads, and aging, making strands may fail unexpectedly. Hence, the health monitoring of steel strands becomes more important to avoid the sudden collapse of hoisting structures. Guided waves (GW) inspection methods have become favorable in recent years due to its long-distance transmission and stability of evaluation in the area of structural health monitoring (SHM) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Many researchers have reported different GW methods to detect different types of defects that occurred in steel strands. However, researchers rarely carry out comparative studies to investigate the effectiveness of each method or system in monitoring the health state of steel strands. This article reports some vital observations revealed from conducting experiments by using contact and noncontact methods, which include three different popular types of GW sensors and methods during their applications in surface-type defect detection. The proper selection of sensors systems has been identified through the present study. The result of the present study is believed to be useful guidance for selecting appropriate GW methods and sensor systems to monitor the integrity of the steel strand and thereby ensure the safety of the hoisted structures.

Investigation of the interwire energy transfer of elastic guided waves inside prestressed cables

Elastic guided waves are of interest for the non-destructive evaluation of cables. Cables are most often multi-wire structures, and understanding wave propagation requires numerical models accounting for the helical geometry of individual wires, the interwire contact mechanisms and the effects of prestress. In this paper, a modal approach based on a so-called semi-analytical finite element method and taking advantage of a biorthogonality relation is proposed in order to calculate the forced response under excitation of a cable, multi-wired, twisted, and prestressed. The main goal of this paper is to investigate how the energy transfers from a given wire, directly excited, to the other wires in order to identify some localization of energy inside the active wire as the waves propagate along the waveguide. The power flow of the excited field is theoretically derived and an energy transfer parameter is proposed to evaluate the level of energy localization inside a given wire. Numerical results obtained for different polarizations of excitation, central and peripheral, highlight how the energy may localize, spread, or strongly change in the cross-section as waves travel along the axis. In particular, a compressional mode localized inside the central wire is found, with little dispersion and significant excitability.

Transient analysis of leaky Lamb waves with a semi-analytical finite element method

We previously formulated a semi-analytical finite element technique for Lamb waves in a plate surrounded by fluids and investigated the dispersion curves and wave structures for leaky Lamb waves. Herein, this technique is extended to the calculation of transient responses both in a plate and in fluids for dynamic loading on the plate surface. To gain fundamental insights into guided wave inspection for a water-filled pipe or tank, guided waves generated upon transient loading of a flat plate water-loaded on one side were analyzed. The results show that a quasi-Scholte mode propagating at the plate-water interface is useful for the long-range inspection of a water-loaded plate because of its non-attenuation and minimal dispersion; moreover, this mode has superior generation efficiency in the low-frequency range, while it is localized near the plate-water interface at higher frequencies.
