Ultrasound assisted additive free synthesis of nanocrystalline zinc oxide

Ultrasound-Driven enhancement of Pt/C catalyst stability in oxygen reduction reaction

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have reached the commercialization phase, representing a promising approach to curbing carbon emissions. However, greater durability of PEMFCs is of paramount importance to ensure their long-term viability and effectiveness, and catalyst development has become a focal point of research. Pt nanoparticles supported on carbon materials (Pt/C) are the primary catalysts used in PEMFCs. Accomplishing both a high dispersion of uniform metal particles on the carbon support and robust adhesion between the metal particles and the carbon support is imperative for superior stability, and will thereby, advance the practical applications of PEMFCs in sustainable energy solutions. Ultrasound-assisted polyol synthesis (UPS) has emerged as a suitable method for synthesizing catalysts with a well-defined metal-support structure, characterized by the high dispersion and uniformity of metal nanoparticles. In this study, we focused on the effect of ultrasound on the synthesis of Pt/C via UPS and the resulting enhanced stability of Pt/C catalysts. Therefore, we compared Pt/C synthesized using a conventional polyol synthesis (Pt/C_P) and Pt/C synthesized via UPS (Pt/C_U) under similar synthesis conditions. The two catalysts had a similar Pt content and the average particle size of the Pt nanoparticles was similar; however, the uniformity and dispersion of Pt nanoparticles in Pt/C_U were better than those of Pt/C_P. Moreover, ex/in-situ analyses performed in a high-temperature environment, in which nanoparticles tend to agglomerate, have revealed that Pt/C_U exhibited a notable improvement in the adhesion of Pt particles to the carbon support compared with that of Pt/C_P. The enhanced adhesion is crucial for maintaining the stability of the catalyst, ultimately contributing to a better durability in practical applications. Ultrasound was applied to the carbon support without the Pt precursor under the same UPS conditions used to synthesize Pt/C_U to identify the reason for the increased adhesion between the Pt particles and the carbon support in Pt/C_U, and we discovered that oxygen functional groups (C-O, C = O, and O-C = O) for anchoring site of Pt particles were generated in the carbon support. Pt/C_U displayed an increase in stability in an electrochemical accelerated stress test (AST) in an acidic electrolyte. The physical and chemical effects of ultrasound on the synthesis of Pt/C via UPS were identified, and we concluded that UPS is suitable for synthesizing carbon supported electrocatalysts with high stability.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of poly(MMA-co-BA)/ZnO nanocomposites with enhanced physical properties

The present study reports synthesis and characterization of poly(MMA-co-BA)/ZnO nanocomposites using ultrasound-assisted in-situ emulsion polymerization. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was copolymerized with butyl acrylate (BA), for enhanced ductility of copolymer matrix, in presence of nanoscale ZnO particles. Ultrasound generated strong micro-turbulence in reaction mixture, which resulted in higher encapsulation and uniform dispersion of ZnO (in native form - without surface modification) in polymer matrix, as compared to mechanical stirring. The nanocomposites were characterized for physical properties and structural morphology using standard techniques such as XRD, FTIR, particle size analysis, UV-Visible spectroscopy, electrical conductivity, TGA, DSC, FE-SEM and TEM. Copolymerization of MMA and BA (in presence of ZnO) followed second order kinetics. Thermal stability (T_10%=324.9°C) and glass transition temperature (T_g=67.8°C) of poly(MMA-co-BA)/ZnO nanocomposites showed significant enhancement (35.1°C for 1wt% ZnO and 15.7°C for 4wt% ZnO, respectively), as compared to pristine poly(MMA-co-BA). poly(MMA-co-BA)/ZnO (5wt%) nanocomposites possessed the highest electrical conductivity of 0.192μS/cm and peak UV absorptivity of 0.55 at 372nm. Solution rheological study of nanocomposites revealed enhancement in viscosity with increasing ZnO loading. Maximum viscosity of 0.01Pa-s was obtained for 5wt% ZnO loading.

Investigation in mechanistic issues of sonocatalysis and sonophotocatalysis using pure and doped photocatalysts

This paper attempts to investigate the mechanistic issues of two hybrid advanced oxidation processes (HAOPs), viz. sonocatalysis and sonophotocatalysis, in which the two individual AOPs, viz. sonolysis and photocatalysis, are combined. Three photocatalysts, viz. pure ZnO and Fe-doped ZnO (with two protocols) have been employed. Fe-doped ZnO catalyst has been characterized using standard techniques. Decolorization of two textile dyes has been used as the model reaction. With experiments that alter the characteristics of ultrasound and cavitation phenomena in the medium, the exact synergy between the two AOPs has been determined using a quantitative yard stick. The results revealed a negative synergy between the two AOPs, which is an almost consistent result for decolorization of both dyes using all three photocatalysts. Fe-doping of ZnO catalyst helps in generation of more OH radicals that could augment decolorization. However, these radical mainly react with dye molecules adsorbed on catalyst surface. Intense shock waves generated by cavitation bubbles cause desorption of dye molecules from catalyst surface and reduce the probability of dye-radical interaction, thus reducing the net utility of photochemically generated OH radicals towards dye decolorization. This is rationale underlying the negative synergy between sonolysis and photocatalysis. Fe-doped ZnO catalyst increases the extent of decolorization, but the synergy between the two individual AOPs remains unaltered with doping.

Studies on growth morphology, UV absorbance and luminescence properties of sulphur doped ZnO nanopowders synthesized by the application of ultrasound with varying input power

Sulphur doped ZnO nanopowders have been prepared by sonochemical method in continuous (CS) and pulsed (PS) modes. Precipitation time was found to vary with input power of applied ultrasound. X-ray diffraction studies show the formation hexagonal wurtzite phase of nano ZnO but variation in size, strain and lattice parameters was observed in the samples synthesized through CS and PS modes with different input power. Surface morphology of the samples changed significantly with input power of the pulse as observed from scanning electron microscopic results. Well defined and c-axis oriented nanorods and multipodes were observed with power setting of 187.5 W whereas in all other cases no definite morphology was observed. UV absorption studies show higher value of absorbance for ZnO:S. Further, the absorption band becomes sharp for the samples prepared with power setting of 225 W. PL spectra show several bands due to different transitions in the region of 400-780 nm which have been explained in the light of excitonic and defect induced transitions in ZnO.

Numerical Simulation and Investigation of System Parameters of Sonochemical Process

This paper presents the effects of various parameters that significantly affect the cavitation. In this study, three types of liquid mediums with different physicochemical properties were considered as the cavitation medium. The effects of various operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, initial bubble radius, dissolved gas content and so forth, were investigated in detail. The simulation results of cavitation bubble dynamics model showed a very interesting link among these parameters for production of oxidizing species. The formation of •OH radical and H2O2 is considered as the results of main effects of sonochemical process. Simulation results of radial motion of cavitation bubble dynamics revealed that bubble with small initial radius gives higher sonochemical effects. This is due to the bubble with small radius can undergo many acoustic cycles before reaching its critical radius when it collapses and produces higher temperature and pressure inside the bubble. On the other hand, due to the low surface tension and high vapor pressure, organic solvents are not suitable for sonochemical reactions.

Zinc oxide nano-particles--sonochemical synthesis, characterization and application for photo-remediation of heavy metal

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have been synthesized sonochemically from zinc acetate solution in aqueous methanol, ethanol and iso-propanol containing about 5 volume% of alcohol. Characterization with FESEM, XRD, AFM and BET surface area shows that the synthesized particles differ in shape and size. ZnO synthesized using isopropanol was observed to be the most crystalline one. The synthesized nanoparticles were used for the photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium in aqueous medium under solar radiation. It was observed that the initial reduction rates varied with the difference in morphology of ZnO crystallites.

Numerical simulations of sonochemical production of BaTiO3 nanoparticles

Numerical simulations of sonochemical production of nanoparticles have been performed for the first time under the experimental condition of Dang et al. [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 48 (2009) 09KC02] on the production of BaTiO(3). The results of the numerical simulations have suggested that only primary particles aggregate with other particles. It is also shown that larger aggregates are produced for lower initial concentration of BaCl(2) and TiCl(4). This is caused by longer reaction time as the reaction rate is lower for lower concentration and by lower viscosity which results in higher rate of aggregation.
