Green sonochemical synthesis and fabrication of cubic MnFe2O4 electrocatalyst decorated carbon nitride nanohybrid for neurotransmitter detection in serum samples

Effects of FB1 and HFB1 on Autonomous Exploratory and Spatial Memory and Learning Abilities in Mice

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a representative form of fumonisin and is widely present in food and feed. Hydrolyzed fumonisin B1 (HFB1) emerges as a breakdown product of FB1, which is accompanied by FB1 alterations. While previous studies have primarily focused on the liver or kidney toxicity of FB1, with limited studies existing on its neurotoxicity and even fewer on the toxicity of HFB1, this study focuses on the neurotoxicity of FB1 and HFB1 exposure in mice investigated by the open field test, Morris water maze test, histopathological analysis, and nontargeted metabolomics. Further, the levels of oxidative stress-related indices, neurotransmitters, and sphingolipids in the brain were measured to analyze their correlation with behavioral outcomes. The results showed that both FB1 (5 mg/kg) and HFB1 (2.8 mg/kg) reduced autonomous exploratory behavior in mice, impaired spatial learning and memory, and caused mild abnormalities in the brain structure. Quantitative analysis further indicated that exposure to FB1 and HFB1 disrupted neurotransmitter homeostasis, exacerbated oxidative stress, and significantly increased the sphinganine/sphingosine (Sa/So) ratio. Moreover, HFB1 exhibited neurotoxic effects similar to those of FB1, emphasizing the need to pay attention to the neurotoxicity effect of HFB1. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the risks and potential neurological damage associated with FB1 and HFB1 exposure, highlighting the necessity for further research in this crucial field.

Highly sensitive and selective serotonin (5-HT) electrochemical sensor based on ultrafine Fe3O4 nanoparticles anchored on carbon spheres

Neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) is involved in various physiological and pathological processes. Therefore, its highly sensitive and selective detection in human serum is of great significance for early diagnosis of disease. In this work, employing iron phthalocyanine as Fe source, ultrafine Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles anchored on carbon spheres (Fe₃O₄/CSs) have been prepared, which exhibits an excellent electrochemical sensing performance toward 5-HT. With carbonecous spheres turned into conductive carbon spheres under the heat treatment in N₂ atmosphere, iron phthalocyanine absorbed on their surfaces are simultaneously pyrolysised and oxidized, and finally transformed into ultrafine Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Electrochemical results demonstrate a high sensitivity (5.503 μA μM^-1) and a low detection limit (4 nM) toward 5-HT for as-prepared Fe₃O₄/CSs. In combination with the morphology and physicochemical property of Fe₃O₄/CSs, the enhanced sensing mechanism toward 5-HT is disscussed. In addition, the developed electrochemical sensor also displays a good sensing stability and an anti-interferent ability. Further applied in real human serum samples, a satisfactory recovery rate is achieved. Promisingly, the developed electrochemical sensor can be employed for the determination of 5-HT in actual samples.

Significance of an Electrochemical Sensor and Nanocomposites: Toward the Electrocatalytic Detection of Neurotransmitters and Their Importance within the Physiological System

A prominent neurotransmitter (NT), dopamine (DA), is a chemical messenger that transmits signals between one neuron to the next to pass on a signal to and from the central nervous system (CNS). The imbalanced concentration of DA may cause numerous neurological sicknesses and syndromes, for example, Parkinson's disease (PD) and schizophrenia. There are many types of NTs in the brain, including epinephrine, norepinephrine (NE), serotonin, and glutamate. Electrochemical sensors have offered a creative direction to biomedical analysis and testing. Researches are in progress to improve the performance of sensors and develop new protocols for sensor design. This review article focuses on the area of sensor growth to discover the applicability of polymers and metallic particles and composite materials as tools in electrochemical sensor surface incorporation. Electrochemical sensors have attracted the attention of researchers as they possess high sensitivity, quick reaction rate, good controllability, and instantaneous detection. Efficient complex materials provide considerable benefits for biological detection as they have exclusive chemical and physical properties. Due to distinctive electrocatalytic characteristics, metallic nanoparticles add fascinating traits to materials that depend on the material's morphology and size. Herein, we have collected much information on NTs and their importance within the physiological system. Furthermore, the electrochemical sensors and corresponding techniques (such as voltammetric, amperometry, impedance, and chronoamperometry) and the different types of electrodes' roles in the analysis of NTs are discussed. Furthermore, other methods for detecting NTs include optical and microdialysis methods. Finally, we show the advantages and disadvantages of different techniques and conclude remarks with future perspectives.

Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets as promising candidates for the detection of hazardous contaminants of environmental and biological concern in aqueous matrices

Monitoring of pollutant and toxic substances is essential for cleaner environment and healthy life. Sensing of various environmental contaminants and biomolecules such as heavy metals, pharmaceutics, toxic gases, volatile organic compounds, food toxins, and pathogens is of high importance to guaranty the good health and sustainable environment to community. In recent years, graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has drawn a significant amount of interest as a sensor due to its large surface area and unique electrochemical properties, low bandgap energy, high thermal and chemical stability, facile synthesis, nontoxicity, and electron rich property. Furthermore, the binary and ternary nanocomposites of graphitic carbon nitride further enhance their performance as a sensor making it a cost effective, fast, and reliable gadget for the purpose, and opens a wide area of research. Numerous reviews addressing a variety of applications including photocatalytic energy conversion, photoelectrochemical detection, and hydrogen evolution of graphitic carbon nitride have been documented to date. But a lesser attention has been devoted to the mechanistic approaches towards sensing of variety of pollutants concerned with environmental and biological aspects. Herein, we present the sensing features of graphitic carbon nitride towards the detection of various analytes including toxic heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, phenolic compounds, nitroaromatic compounds, volatile organic molecules, toxic gases, and foodborne pathogens. This review will undoubtedly provide future insights for researchers working in the field of sensors, allowing them to investigate the intriguing graphitic carbon nitride material as a sensing platform that is comparable to several other nanomaterials documented in the literature. Therefore, we hope that this study could reveal some intriguing sensing properties of graphitic carbon nitride, which may help researchers better understand how it interacts with contaminants of environmental and biological concern. Sonochemical activation-assisted biosynthesis of Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles and sonocatalytic degradation of methyl orange

In this research, a sonochemical activation-assisted biosynthesis of Au/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles is proposed. The proposed synthesis methodology incorporates the use of Piper auritum (an endemic plant) as reducing agent and in a complementary way, an ultrasonication process to promote the synthesis of the plasmonic/magnetic nanoparticles (Au/Fe₃O₄). The synergic effect of the green and sonochemical synthesis favors the well-dispersion of precursor salts and the subsequent growth of the Au/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. The hybrid green/sonochemical process generates an economical, ecological and simplified alternative to synthesizing Au/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles whit enhanced catalytic activity, pronounced magnetic properties. The morphological, chemical and structural characterization was carried out by high- resolution Scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy confirm the Au/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles obtention. The magnetic properties were evaluated by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Superparamagnetic behavior, of the Au/ Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles was observed (M_s = 51 emu/g and H_c = 30 Oe at 300 K). Finally, the catalytic activity was evaluated by sonocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). In this stage, it was possible to achieve a removal percentage of 91.2% at 15 min of the sonocatalytic process (160 W/42 kHz). The initial concentration of the MO was 20 mg L^-1, and the Fe3O4-Au dosage was 0.075 gL^-1. The MO degradation process was described mathematically by four kinetic adsorption models: Pseudo-first order model, Pseudo-second order model, Elovich and intraparticle diffusion model.
