Scrotoschisis: a case report

Background

Scrotoschisis is a rare congenital anomaly of the scrotal wall with idiopathic etiology and unknown prevalence. This pathology is extremely rare. We report a new case and review the literature for relevant data.

Case presentation

A 3-day-old full-term baby boy of African ethnicity, who had a homebirth, with birth weight of 2.7 kg presented to our emergency department with exteriorization of left testis; after clinical examination and proper investigations the diagnosis was scrotoschisis. Surgical treatment was performed by primary closure with excellent follow-up. We reviewed the literature to elaborate on the etiology of this pathology and its management.

Conclusions

Scrotoschisis is a rare congenital anomaly affecting healthy babies. Early management is substantial. Further studies are recommended to learn more about the etiology and long-term results, including the effect on the fertility.

Scrotoschisis in a neonate with meconium peritonitis and periorchitis

We present the case of an infant born with scrotoschisis and evidence of meconium periorchitis and peritonitis. A scrotal defect was noted with exposure of the left testis and spermatic cord. Meconium peritonitis and periorchitis were confirmed on operative exploration. Given the history, cystic fibrosis was suspected, but initial screening and diagnostic tests were negative.

Scrotoschisis: A rare cause of acute scrotum in neonates

Spontaneous extrusion of the testis from the scrotum is a very rare cause of acute scrotum in neonates. It has been described as scrotoschisis in few case reports. The exact etiology of this condition is not known. Replacing the testes and repair of scrotum is needed and associated with good prognosis. We report two cases that presented in a short interval to us with a review of the literature.

Scrotoschisis: an extremely rare congenital uropathy

Scrotoschisis, the congenital extrusion of the testis through the scrotal wall, is very rare. We describe a new case and review the pertinent published data. A male neonate presented with left scrotoschisis that was repaired successfully with a Denis-Browne trans-scrotal orchiopexy, with antibiotic coverage. The testes were intrascrotal and symmetric after 2 years of follow-up. Most cases of scrotoschisis are unilateral and affect normal males. The immediate prognosis is good, but long-term results are not available. The etiology of the disease is unknown, but it might be related to spontaneous healed fetal intestinal perforations with meconium peritonitis.
