Abstract
COVID-19 is a novel viral infection with a wide variety of clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic cases to severe respiratory illness. Laryngospasm is a spontaneous sustained closure of the laryngeal muscles leading to acute airway obstruction. We report a case of a 40-year-old male with a history of nephrolithiasis who underwent laparoscopic pyeloplasty and developed laryngospasm as a consequence of contracting COVID-19. The case was further complicated by the development of pneumothorax and pleural effusion during the postoperative period. The patient was managed with supplemental oxygen, antibiotics, antiviral therapy, and close monitoring. He recovered without any additional complications. This case highlights the potential initial clinical manifestation and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 infection in surgical patients.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a significant global concern that has had major implications for the healthcare system. Patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) undergoing elective or emergency surgical procedures have a substantial risk of mortality and peri-operative complications. The present study aimed to describe the characteristics of patients who underwent elective surgery and developed nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 infection post-surgery. Patients who underwent thoracic, upper and lower abdominal or peripheral elective surgery with a polymerase chain reaction diagnosis of COVID-19, at 3-7 days after the surgery, were enrolled in the present retrospective study. Demographics, vaccination status against SARS-CoV-2, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) and laboratory data were recorded upon admission to the hospital unit. In total, 116 subjects (80 males, 36 females; mean age, 67.31±16.83 years) fulfilling the inclusion criteria were identified. Among the 116 participants, 14 (12.1%) were intubated. From the 116 individuals analyzed, 84 were alive after 30 days (survivors), and 32 had succumbed to the disease (non-survivors). The mortality rate was 27.6% (32/116). The non-survivors had an older age and a higher CCI score. At the evaluation upon admission to the hospital unit, the survivors presented with higher serum albumin levels and a higher number of blood lymphocytes. In addition, the survivors exhibited lower levels of lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and C-reactive protein (CRP), as well as a higher neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and CRP to albumin ratio (CAR) (P<0.05). The patients that were intubated had higher levels of gamma glutamyl-transferase (GGT), ALP and ferritin, as well as a higher NLR and platelet to lymphocyte ratio upon admission to the hospital unit (P<0.05). According to the Cox proportional hazards multivariate regression analysis, the only independent predictors of mortality and intubation were ALP and GGT upon admission, respectively (P<0.05). On the whole, the findings of the present study suggest that more stringent guidelines are required in order to prevent infection during the post-operative period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hospital settings are at increased risk of spreading Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, hence non-pharmaceutical prevention interventions (NPPIs) and prioritized vaccination of healthcare workers and resident patients are critical. The status of COVID-19 hospital acquired infections (HAIs) in low-income settings is unclear. We aimed to identify and summarize the existing evidence on COVID-19 HAIs amongst patients, prior to the rollout of vaccines in countries worldwide. METHODS We conducted a scoping review of English peer-reviewed literature in PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus using a combination of selected search terms. Full texts articles presenting results on COVID-19 HAIs in hospitalised patients before the rollout of vaccines in countries worldwide were eligible. Data extracted from eligible articles included estimates of COVID-19 HAIs, country, and type of hospital setting, and was summarized narratively. Quality assessment of included articles was not possible. RESULTS Literature searches generated a total of 5920 articles, and 45 were eligible for analysis. Eligible articles were from Europe, North America, Asia, and Brazil and none were from low-income countries. The proportion of COVID-19 HAIs ranged from 0% when strict NPPIs were applied, to 65% otherwise. The estimates of COVID-19 HAIs did not differ by country but were lower in studies conducted after implementation of NPPIs and in specialized hospital settings for operative surgery. Studies conducted before the implementation of NPPIs or in long-term care and psychiatric wards often reported high estimates of HAI. Although there was no clear trend in general wards, those situated in academic hospitals managed to reduce HAI rates under strict NPPI protocols. Operative surgery settings, unlike psychiatric settings, effectively prevented COVID-19 HAI using tailored NPPIs. CONCLUSION The available evidence shows a high risk of COVID-19 HAIs, the feasibility of preventing HAIs in different healthcare settings and the importance of appropriately tailored NPPIs. There were no data from low-income settings, therefore, it is unclear whether the reported NPPI approaches could be equally effective elsewhere. We recommend routine monitoring of COVID-19 HAIs in countries with low vaccination coverage, to identify and close gaps in NPPIs and understand gains made from vaccinating healthcare workers and hospitalized patients.

Abstract
Various intelligent technologies have been applied during COVID-19, which has become a worldwide public health emergency and brought significant challenges to the medical systems around the world. Notably, the application of robots has played a role in hospitals, quarantine facilities and public spaces and has attracted much attention from the media and the public. This study is based on a questionnaire survey on the perception and reception of robots used for medical care in the pandemic among the Chinese population. A total of 1667 people participated in the survey, 93.6% of respondents were pursuing or had completed a bachelor, master or even doctorate degree. The results show that Chinese people generally held positive attitudes towards "anti-pandemic robots" and affirmed their contribution to reducing the burden of medical care and virus transmission. A few respondents were concerned about the issues of robots replacing humans and it was apparent that their ethical views on robots were not completely consistent across their demographics (e.g., age, industry). Nevertheless, most respondents tended to be optimistic about robot applications and dialectical about the ethical issues involved. This is related to the prominent role robots played during the pandemic, the Chinese public's expectations of new technologies and technology-friendly public opinion in China. Exploring the perception and reception of anti-pandemic robots in different countries or cultures is important because it can shed some light on the future applications of robots, especially in the field of infectious disease control.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on functional urology procedures in France. Methods A prospective study was conducted within 11 secondary and tertiary referral centers in France. Patients aged > 18 years who were diagnosed with a functional urology disease before the national lockdown (March 17th, 2020) and who required a surgery were included. Study period went from March 17th to September 30th 2020. The included interventions were listed according to the guidelines for functional urology enacted by the French Association of Urology and delay of reoperation was compared to the guidelines’ delay. The primary outcome was the number of procedures left unscheduled at the end of the study period. Descriptive statistics were performed. Results From March 17th 2020 to September 3 rd 2020, 1246 patients with a previous diagnosis of a functional urological disease requiring a surgery were included. The mean follow-up was 140.4 days (± 53.4). Overall, 316 interventions (25.4%) were maintained whereas 74 (5.9%) were canceled, 848 (68.1%) postponed and 8 patients (0.6%) died. At the end of the follow-up, 184 patients (21.7%) were still not rescheduled. If the intervention was postponed, the mean delay between the initial and final date was 85.7 days (± 64.4). Conclusion Overall, more than two thirds of interventions had to be postponed and the mean delay between the initial and final date was about three months.

Abstract
Die uroonkologische Therapie hat eine hohe Priorität trotz der bestehenden Einschränkungen während der COVID-19-Pandemie („coronavirus disease 2019“). Die zeitnahe Durchführung und die Art der Behandlung werden durch organisatorische Veränderungen möglicherweise kompliziert. Zur Dokumentation und Objektivierung der versorgten Patienten können verschiedene Register herangezogen werden. Dazu zählen die aktuellen Daten des Instituts für das Entgeltsystem im Krankenhaus (InEK) sowie die Meldungen bei den Krebsregistern der Bundesländer. Wir geben eine Übersicht zur Registrierung der uroonkologischen Versorgungssituation während der ersten Welle der COVID-19-Pandemie sowie ergänzend zu möglichen Komplikationsraten und -mustern bei operativ behandelten Patienten. Bei der Klinischen Landesregisterstelle des Krebsregisters Baden-Württemberg wurden im Jahr 2020 bisher weniger uroonkologische Neudiagnosen gemeldet. Während der Pandemie nahm in Deutschland die Anzahl der operativ behandelten Nierenzell- und Harnblasenkarzinome ab, während bei radikalen Prostatektomien kein Unterschied im Vergleich zu den Vorjahren erkennbar ist. Eine COVID-19-Erkrankung könnte das Risiko für nicht-urologische Komplikationen nach uroonkologischen Operationen erhöhen, jedoch ist die aktuelle Datenlage noch unzureichend.

Perioperative Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Incidence and Outcomes in Neurosurgical Patients at Two Tertiary Care Centers in Washington, DC, During a Pandemic: A 6-Month Follow-up. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to affect all aspects of health care delivery, and neurosurgical practices are not immune to its impact. We aimed to evaluate neurosurgical practice patterns as well as the perioperative incidence of COVID-19 in neurosurgical patients and their outcomes. METHODS A retrospective review of neurosurgical and neurointerventional cases at 2 tertiary centers during the first 3 months of the first peak of COVID-19 pandemic (March 8 to June 8) as well as following 3 months (post-peak pandemic; June 9 to September 9) was performed. Baseline characteristics, perioperative COVID-19 test results, modified Medically Necessary, Time-Sensitive (mMeNTS) score, and outcome measures were compared between COVID-19-positive and-negative patients through bivariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS In total, 652 neurosurgical and 217 neurointerventional cases were performed during post-peak pandemic period. Cervical spine, lumbar spine, functional/pain, cranioplasty, and cerebral angiogram cases were significantly increased in the postpandemic period. There was a 2.9% (35/1197) positivity rate for COVID-19 testing overall and 3.6% (13/363) positivity rate postoperatively. Age, mMeNTS score, complications, length of stay, case acuity, American Society of Anesthesiologists status, and disposition were significantly different between COVID-19-positive and-negative patients. CONCLUSIONS A significant increase in elective case volume during the post-peak pandemic period is feasible with low and acceptable incidence of COVID-19 in neurosurgical patients. COVID-19-positive patients were younger, less likely to undergo elective procedures, had increased length of stay, had more complications, and were discharged to a location other than home. The mMeNTS score plays a role in decision-making for scheduling elective cases.
