Searching Across Realities: Investigating ERPs and Eye-Tracking Correlates of Visual Search in Mixed Reality

Mixed Reality allows us to integrate virtual and physical content into users' environments seamlessly. Yet, how this fusion affects perceptual and cognitive resources and our ability to find virtual or physical objects remains uncertain. Displaying virtual and physical information simultaneously might lead to divided attention and increased visual complexity, impacting users' visual processing, performance, and workload. In a visual search task, we asked participants to locate virtual and physical objects in Augmented Reality and Augmented Virtuality to understand the effects on performance. We evaluated search efficiency and attention allocation for virtual and physical objects using event-related potentials, fixation and saccade metrics, and behavioral measures. We found that users were more efficient in identifying objects in Augmented Virtuality, while virtual objects gained saliency in Augmented Virtuality. This suggests that visual fidelity might increase the perceptual load of the scene. Reduced amplitude in distractor positivity ERP, and fixation patterns supported improved distractor suppression and search efficiency in Augmented Virtuality. We discuss design implications for mixed reality adaptive systems based on physiological inputs for interaction.

Attentional window set by expected relevance of environmental signals

The existence of an attentional window--a limited region in visual space at which attention is directed--has been invoked to explain why sudden visual onsets may or may not capture overt or covert attention. Here, we test the hypothesis that observers voluntarily control the size of this attentional window to regulate whether or not environmental signals can capture attention. We have used a novel approach to test this: participants eye-movements were tracked while they performed a search task that required dynamic gaze-shifts. During the search task, abrupt onsets were presented that cued the target positions at different levels of congruency. The participant knew these levels. We determined oculomotor capture efficiency for onsets that appeared at different viewing eccentricities. From these, we could derive the participant's attentional window size as a function of onset congruency. We find that the window was small during the presentation of low-congruency onsets, but increased monotonically in size with an increase in the expected congruency of the onsets. This indicates that the attentional window is under voluntary control and is set according to the expected relevance of environmental signals for the observer's momentary behavioral goals. Moreover, our approach provides a new and exciting method to directly measure the size of the attentional window.

Lévy-like diffusion in eye movements during spoken-language comprehension

This study explores the diffusive properties of human eye movements during a language comprehension task. In this task, adults are given auditory instructions to locate named objects on a computer screen. Although it has been convention to model visual search as standard Brownian diffusion, we find evidence that eye movements are hyperdiffusive. Specifically, we use comparisons of maximum-likelihood fit as well as standard deviation analysis and diffusion entropy analysis to show that visual search during language comprehension exhibits Lévy-like rather than Gaussian diffusion.

Attentional control over either of the two competing percepts of ambiguous stimuli revealed by a two-parameter analysis: Means do not make the difference

We studied distributions of perceptual rivalry reversals, as defined by the two fitted parameters of the Gamma distribution. We did so for a variety of bi-stable stimuli and voluntary control exertion tasks. Subjects' distributions differed from one another for a particular stimulus and control task in a systematic way that reflects a constraint on the describing parameters. We found a variety of two-parameter effects, the most important one being that distributions of subjects differ from one another in the same systematic way across different stimuli and control tasks (i.e., a fast switcher remains fast across all conditions in a parameter-specified way). The cardinal component of subject-dependent variation was not the conventionally used mean reversal rate, but a component that was oriented-for all stimuli and tasks-roughly perpendicular to the mean rate. For the Necker cube, we performed additional experiments employing specific variations in control exertion, suggesting that subjects have to a considerable extent independent control over the reversal rate of either of the two competing percepts.
