Attentional capacity limit for visual search causes spatial neglect in normal observers

On the relation between crowding and ensemble perception: Examining the role of attention

Ensemble perception of a crowd of stimuli is very accurate, even when individual stimuli are invisible due to crowding. The ability of high-precision ensemble perception can be an evolved compensatory mechanism for the limited attentional resolution caused by crowding. Thus the relationship of crowding and ensemble coding is like two sides of the same coin wherein attention may play a critical factor for their coexistence. The present study investigated whether crowding and ensemble coding were similarly modulated by attention, which can promote our understanding of their relation. Experiment 1 showed that diverting attention away from the target harmed the performance in both crowding and ensemble perception tasks regardless of stimulus density, but crowding was more severely harmed. Experiment 2 showed that directing attention toward the target bar enhanced the performance of crowding regardless of stimulus density. Ensemble perception of high-density bars was also enhanced but to a lesser extent, while ensemble perception of low-density bars was harmed. Together, our results indicate that crowding is strongly modulated by attention, whereas ensemble perception is only moderately modulated by attention, which conforms to the adaptive view.

Unveiling residual, spontaneous recovery from subtle hemispatial neglect three years after stroke

A common and disabling consequence of stroke is the difficulty in processing contralesional space (i.e., hemispatial neglect). According to paper-and-pencil tests, neglect remits or stabilizes in severity within a few months after a brain injury. This arbitrary temporal limit, however, is at odds with neglect’s well-known dependency on task-sensitivity. The present study tested the hypothesis that the putative early resolution of neglect might be due to the insensitivity of testing methods rather than to the lack of spontaneous recovery at later stages. A right hemisphere stroke patient was studied longitudinally for 3 years. According to paper-and-pencil tests the patient showed no symptom of hemispatial neglect 1 month post stroke. Awareness of spatially lateralized visual targets was then assessed by means of computer-based single- and dual-tasks requiring an additional top-down deployment of attention for the parallel processing of visual or auditory stimuli. Errorless performance at computer-based tasks was reached at month 12 and maintained until month 29 after stroke. A bottom-up manipulation was then implemented by reducing target diameter. Following this change, more than 50% of contralesional targets were omitted, mostly under dual-tasking. At months 40 and 41 the same task revealed a significant (but not complete) reduction in the number of contralesional omissions. Ipsilesional targets were, in contrast, still errorless detected. The coupling of a bottom-up (target change) and a top-down (dual-tasking) manipulation revealed the presence of a long-lasting spontaneous recovery from contralesional spatial awareness deficits. In contrast, neither manipulation was effective when implemented separately. After having excluded the potential confound of practice effects, it was concluded that not only the presence but also the time course of hemispatial neglect strongly depends on the degree of attentional engagement required by the task.

Computation of relative numerosity of circular dot textures

To find out whether there are separate visual mechanisms for size, density, and numerosity computation in textures, we investigated the ability of human observers both to discriminate differences in numerosity between approximately circular textures and to decide whether the differences were due to a change in circle size or dot density. The standard texture always contained 64 irregularly spaced fuzzy dots of random contrast polarity. Dots were added or subtracted from the test pattern either by changing the dot density with the pattern size constant or the pattern size with density constant. Observers had to decide whether size or density had changed and whether the change was an increase or a decrease (mixed task condition). In a separate condition, they reported differences in numerosity (numerosity condition). Numerosity changes were more accurately reported when they were correlated with changes in size than with changes in density, arguing against a single mechanism for numerosity. Observers showed a bias toward reporting larger patterns as denser and vice versa. The data were consistent with a mechanism in which observers compute numerosity from size and density signals and decide whether size or density had changed by the signal detection theory MAX rule after transforming signals into z-values. Because thresholds were not significantly lower in the numerosity condition than in the mixed task condition, we conclude that the direct numerosity mechanism, if it exists, must be noisier than the mechanisms that respond to changes in size and density.

Signal detection evidence for limited capacity in visual search

The nature of capacity limits (if any) in visual search has been a topic of controversy for decades. In 30 years of work, researchers have attempted to distinguish between two broad classes of visual search models. Attention-limited models have proposed two stages of perceptual processing: an unlimited-capacity preattentive stage, and a limited-capacity selective attention stage. Conversely, noise-limited models have proposed a single, unlimited-capacity perceptual processing stage, with decision processes influenced only by stochastic noise. Here, we use signal detection methods to test a strong prediction of attention-limited models. In standard attention-limited models, performance of some searches (feature searches) should only be limited by a preattentive stage. Other search tasks (e.g., spatial configuration search for a "2" among "5"s) should be additionally limited by an attentional bottleneck. We equated average accuracies for a feature and a spatial configuration search over set sizes of 1-8 for briefly presented stimuli. The strong prediction of attention-limited models is that, given overall equivalence in performance, accuracy should be better on the spatial configuration search than on the feature search for set size 1, and worse for set size 8. We confirm this crossover interaction and show that it is problematic for at least one class of one-stage decision models.

Visual performance fields: frames of reference

Performance in most visual discrimination tasks is better along the horizontal than the vertical meridian (Horizontal-Vertical Anisotropy, HVA), and along the lower than the upper vertical meridian (Vertical Meridian Asymmetry, VMA), with intermediate performance at intercardinal locations. As these inhomogeneities are prevalent throughout visual tasks, it is important to understand the perceptual consequences of dissociating spatial reference frames. In all studies of performance fields so far, allocentric environmental references and egocentric observer reference frames were aligned. Here we quantified the effects of manipulating head-centric and retinotopic coordinates on the shape of visual performance fields. When observers viewed briefly presented radial arrays of Gabors and discriminated the tilt of a target relative to homogeneously oriented distractors, performance fields shifted with head tilt (Experiment 1), and fixation (Experiment 2). These results show that performance fields shift in-line with egocentric referents, corresponding to the retinal location of the stimulus.

Dissociable effects of attention and crowding on orientation averaging

It has been proposed that visual crowding-the breakdown in recognition that occurs when objects are presented in cluttered scenes-reflects a limit imposed by visual attention. We examined this idea in the context of an orientation averaging task, having subjects judge the mean orientation of a set of oriented signal elements either in isolation, or "crowded" by nearby randomly oriented elements. In some conditions, subjects also had to perform an attentionally demanding secondary task. By measuring performance at different levels of signal orientation variability, we show that crowding increases subjects' local uncertainty (about the orientation of individual elements) but that diverting attention reduces their global efficiency (the effective number of elements they can average over). Furthermore, performance with the same stimulus-sequence, presented multiple times, reveals that crowding does not induce more stimulus-independent variability (as would be predicted by some accounts based on attention). We conclude that crowding and attentional load have dissociable perceptual consequences for orientation averaging, suggesting distinct neural mechanisms for both. For the task we examined, attention can modulate the effects of crowding by changing the efficiency with which information is analyzed by the visual system but since crowding changes local uncertainty, not efficiency, crowding does not reflect an attentional limit.
