Alterations to foveal crowding with microsaccade preparation

Visual stimuli presented around the time of a saccade have been shown to be perceived differently by the visual system, including a reduction in the harmful impact of flankers (crowding). However, whether the effects observed are due strictly to crowding remains controversial, and the effects have only been measured with large saccades in peripheral vision. Here we investigate how crowded stimuli placed 20 arc minutes from the center of gaze are affected by an upcoming microsaccade. The stimulus consisted of a rotated T of size 6.25 arcminutes that was either unflanked, surrounded by four flankers (Experiment 1), or surrounded by two flankers that were positioned either radially or tangentially (Experiments 2 and 3). In 80 % of trials, subjects made voluntary microsaccades to the target when cued, and in the remaining 20 % of the trials subjects continued to maintain fixation. In Experiments 1 and 2, subjects were required to saccade to the same location as the target, while in Experiment 3 subjects saccaded to a different location ∼ 20 arc min to the upper left of the target. Thus, we provide evidence for two separable pre-saccadic benefits for crowded parafoveal targets: one isotropizes the crowding zone for stimuli presented 200 to 125 ms before microsaccadic onset, and another provides a benefit exclusively for microsaccade targets surrounded by tangential flankers in the presence of imminent microsaccades. Two possible mechanisms are attentional enhancement and predictive remapping of receptive fields, respectively.

Microsaccadic correlates of covert attention and crowding

Spatial crowding occurs when an object is cluttered among other objects in space and is a ubiquitous factor affecting object recognition in the peripheral visual field. Crowding is typically tested by presenting crowded stimuli at an eccentric location while having observers fixate at a point in space. However, even during fixation, our eyes are not perfectly steady but instead make small-scale eye movements (microsaccades) that have recently been suggested to be affected by shifts in attentional allocation. In the current study, we monitored microsaccadic behavior (a possible attentional correlate) to understand naturally occurring shifts in attention that occur following the presentation of a crowded stimulus. A tracking scanning laser ophthalmoscope (TSLO) was used to image the right eye of each observer during a psychophysical task. The stimuli consisted of Sloan numbers (0-9) presented briefly, either unflanked or surrounded by Sloan numbers at one of four nominal spacings. The extent of crowding was found to decrease by 26% on trials with the presence of incongruent microsaccades (proposed to suggest attentional capture). These findings complement the existing body of literature on the beneficial impact of explicit shifts of spatial attention to the location of a crowded stimulus.

Pre-saccadic perception: Separate time courses for enhancement and spatial pooling at the saccade target

We interact with complex scenes using eye movements to select targets of interest. Studies have shown that the future target of a saccadic eye movement is processed differently by the visual system. A number of effects have been reported, including a benefit for perceptual performance at the target (“enhancement”), reduced influences of backward masking (“un-masking”), reduced crowding (“un-crowding”) and spatial compression towards the saccade target. We investigated the time course of these effects by measuring orientation discrimination for targets that were spatially crowded or temporally masked. In four experiments, we varied the target-flanker distance, the presence of forward/backward masks, the orientation of the flankers and whether participants made a saccade. Masking and randomizing flanker orientation reduced performance in both fixation and saccade trials. We found a small improvement in performance on saccade trials, compared to fixation trials, with a time course that was consistent with a general enhancement at the saccade target. In addition, a decrement in performance (reporting the average flanker orientation, rather than the target) was found in the time bins nearest saccade onset when random oriented flankers were used, consistent with spatial pooling around the saccade target. We did not find strong evidence for un-crowding. Overall, our pattern of results was consistent with both an early, general enhancement at the saccade target and a later, peri-saccadic compression/pooling towards the saccade target.

Visual crowding is a combination of an increase of positional uncertainty, source confusion, and featural averaging

Although we perceive a richly detailed visual world, our ability to identify individual objects is severely limited in clutter, particularly in peripheral vision. Models of such “crowding” have generally been driven by the phenomenological misidentifications of crowded targets: using stimuli that do not easily combine to form a unique symbol (e.g. letters or objects), observers typically confuse the source of objects and report either the target or a distractor, but when continuous features are used (e.g. orientated gratings or line positions) observers report a feature somewhere between the target and distractor. To reconcile these accounts, we develop a hybrid method of adjustment that allows detailed analysis of these multiple error categories. Observers reported the orientation of a target, under several distractor conditions, by adjusting an identical foveal target. We apply new modelling to quantify whether perceptual reports show evidence of positional uncertainty, source confusion, and featural averaging on a trial-by-trial basis. Our results show that observers make a large proportion of source-confusion errors. However, our study also reveals the distribution of perceptual reports that underlie performance in this crowding task more generally: aggregate errors cannot be neatly labelled because they are heterogeneous and their structure depends on target-distractor distance.

Interaction between stimulus contrast and pre-saccadic crowding

Objects that are briefly flashed around the time of saccades are mislocalized. Previously, robust interactions between saccadic perceptual distortions and stimulus contrast have been reported. It is also known that crowding depends on the contrast of the target and flankers. Here, we investigated how stimulus contrast and crowding interact with pre-saccadic perception. We asked observers to report the orientation of a tilted Gabor presented in the periphery, with or without four flanking vertically oriented Gabors. Observers performed the task either following a saccade or while maintaining fixation. Contrasts of the target and flankers were independently set to either high or low, with equal probability. In both the fixation and saccade conditions, the flanked conditions resulted in worse discrimination performance-the crowding effect. In the unflanked saccade trials, performance significantly decreased with target-to-saccade onset for low-contrast targets but not for high-contrast targets. In the presence of flankers, impending saccades reduced performance only for low-contrast, but not for high-contrast flankers. Interestingly, average performance in the fixation and saccade conditions was mostly similar in all contrast conditions. Moreover, the magnitude of crowding was influenced by saccades only when the target had high contrast and the flankers had low contrasts. Overall, our results are consistent with modulation of perisaccadic spatial localization by contrast and saccadic suppression, but at odds with a recent report of pre-saccadic release of crowding.
