Methods to estimate the transfer of contaminants into recycling products - A case study from Austria

Increasing the Recycling of PVC Flooring Requires Phthalate Removal for Ensuring Consumers' Safety: A Cross-Checked Substance Flow Analysis of Plasticizers for Switzerland

As our planet grapples with the severe repercussions of plastic pollution, mechanical recycling has been proposed as a potential remedy. However, increasing mechanical recycling may have unintended negative consequences. For example, recycling of PVC flooring containing hazardous plasticizers that were used in the past may lead to continued exposure. Here we propose measures to increase recycling while circumventing adverse health impacts caused by legacy additives. For this, we conduct a dynamic substance flow analysis for Switzerland and the time period from 1950 to 2100, focusing on three plasticizers: di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), diisononyl phthalate (DiNP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT). We quantify the uncertainty of results, check their plausibility against measured concentrations in samples representative for the Swiss market, and compare them with modeled substance flows in Germany. Based on the cross-checked model, future average concentrations of DEHP in PVC flooring on the Swiss market are expected to be above the legal limit of 0.1 wt % for several decades if increased recycling rates are implemented without additional measures. Phasing out the potentially concerning DiNP, too, and preventing phthalates from entering recycling would lower their average market concentrations to values below 0.1 wt % and enable increasing recycling rates without compromising product safety. Analogous measures could help achieve this goal across other European countries and product groups.

Composition and contamination of source separated food waste from different sources and regulatory environments

Food waste recycling is needed to create a more sustainable, circular food system; however, the process must be carefully managed to avoid the introduction and build-up of contaminants. We collected and screened source-separated food waste for five classes of contaminants (physical contaminants, heavy metals, halogenated organics, pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes) from two regulatory environments (voluntary vs mandated food separation) to quantify contamination. Physical contamination was frequently found; 57% of samples contained non-compostable waste. Most heavy metals were not detected, and although copper and zinc were present in most samples, they were always below the most stringent global standards for compost. Some samples had detectable halogenated organics, including perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which is cause for concern because some of these accumulate in the food chain. PFBA was detected in 60%, PFHxS in 8% and PFNA in 4% of samples tested. The pathogen Salmonella was present in 3% (2/71) and L. monocytogenes in 11% (8/71) of samples. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli was not detected. Next generation sequencing showed the presence of several genera that contain foodborne pathogens, most commonly Yersinia. Antibiotic resistance genes tet(M) and bla_TEM were present in 96% and 97% of samples respectively, however the last-resort colistin resistance gene mcr-1 was not detected. Overall contamination in our source-separated samples was low, with the exception of some antibiotic resistance genes, however our processing method might have underestimated packaging-associated contamination. Regulatory environment did not affect contamination, but carbon, nitrogen phosphorus, calcium, copper, tet (M), and physical contamination varied by source type.

Leveraging Circular Economy through a Methodology for Smart Service Systems Engineering

Product Service Systems (PSS) and Smart Services are powerful means for deploying Circular Economy (CE) goals in industrial practices, through dematerialization, extension of product lifetime and efficiency increase by digitization. Within this article, approaches from PSS design, Smart Service design and Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) are combined to form a Methodology for Smart Service Architecture Definition (MESSIAH). First, analyses of present system modelling procedures and systems modelling notations in terms of their suitability for Smart Service development are presented. The results indicate that current notations and tools do not entirely fit the requirements of Smart Service development, but that they can be adapted in order to do so. The developed methodology includes a modelling language system, the MESSIAH Blueprinting framework, a systematic procedure and MESSIAH CE, which is specifically designed for addressing CE strategies and practices. The methodology was validated on the example of a Smart Sustainable Street Light System for Cycling Security (SHEILA). MESSIAH proved useful to help Smart Service design teams develop service-driven and robust Smart Services. By applying MESSIAH CE, a sustainable Smart Service, which addresses CE goals, has been developed.
