Aggregating ability of ferric chloride in the presence of phosphate ligand

Cooperation of ferrous ions and hydrated ferric oxide for advanced phosphate removal over a wide pH range: Mechanism and kinetics

Excessive phosphate loading leads to eutrophication problems in rivers or lakes and causes serious environmental and economic damages, urging new technologies to reduce effluent phosphate at ultra-low levels. As a promising candidate, adsorption over metal oxides is restricted by the released hydroxide anions (OH-) through ligand exchange, which elevates pH and suppresses further adsorption. In this contribution, we found ferrous ions (Fe2+) significantly enhance phosphate removal over hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) in a wide pH range via a cooperation of adsorption and precipitation, and clarified the synergistic mechanism by a series of characterizations and the modified models of adsorption isotherms and pseudo second-order kinetics. The combination of Fe2+and HFO removed up to 51.7 mg/g of phosphate at pH 4.0, with 43.6 and 8.1 mg/g attributing to adsorption and precipitation, respectively. In comparison to HFO alone, HFO/Fe2+ system achieved 2.2-fold increase in phosphate removal, 1.9-fold increase in phosphate adsorption capacity, and 3.4-fold increase in phosphate removal rate. The enhancement is understood by that hydroxide anions released from ligand exchange over HFO are neutralized by protons produced from the oxidative precipitation of ferrous ions. The HFO/Fe2+ combining system is promising to realize advanced removal of low concentration phosphate containing wastewater, and these findings bring new insights for the development of novel phosphate removal technologies through a rational design of a combination process.

Atomic-Level Structural Differences between Fe(III) Coprecipitates Generated by the Addition of Fe(III) Coagulants and by the Oxidation of Fe(II) Coagulants Determine Their Coagulation Behavior in Phosphate and DOM Removal

In situ Fe(III) coprecipitation from Fe2+ oxidation is a widespread phenomenon in natural environments and water treatment processes. Studies have shown the superiority of in situ Fe(III) (formed by in situ oxidation of a Fe(II) coagulant) over ex situ Fe(III) (using a Fe(III) coagulant directly) in coagulation, but the reasons remain unclear due to the uncertain nature of amorphous structures. Here, we utilized an in situ Fe(III) coagulation process, oxidizing the Fe(II) coagulant by potassium permanganate (KMnO4), to treat phosphate-containing surface water and analyzed differences between in situ and ex situ Fe(III) coagulation in phosphate removal, dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal, and floc growth. Compared to ex situ Fe(III), flocs formed by the natural oxidizing Fe2+ coagulant exhibited more effective phosphate removal. Furthermore, in situ Fe(III) formed through accelerated oxidation by KMnO4 demonstrated improved flocculation behavior and enhanced removal of specific types of DOM by forming a more stable structure while still maintaining effective phosphate removal. Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra (EXAFS) of the flocs explained their differences. A short-range ordered strengite-like structure (corner-linked PO4 tetrahedra to FeO6 octahedra) was the key to more effective phosphorus removal of in situ Fe(III) than ex situ Fe(III) and was well preserved when KMnO4 accelerated in situ Fe(III) formation. Conversely, KMnO4 significantly inhibited the edge and corner coordination between FeO6 octahedra and altered the floc-chain-forming behavior by accelerating hydrolysis, resulting in a more dispersed monomeric structure than ex situ Fe(III). This research provides an explanation for the superiority of in situ Fe(III) in phosphorus removal and highlights the importance of atomic-level structural differences between ex situ and in situ Fe(III) coprecipitates in water treatment.

Mechanism insight into the role of clay particles on enhancing phosphate removal by ferrate compared with ferric salt

The application of ferrate (Fe(VI)) and ferric chloride as coagulants for treating phosphate wastewater in the presence of kaolin clay particles was comparatively studied. The phosphate removal processes by ferrate and ferric chloride assisted with kaolin clay particles were investigated under different Fe/P molar ratios. At neutral pH, complete removal of phosphates by ferrate and ferric chloride was observed at 2:1 and 6:1 of Fe/P molar ratio, respectively. The effect of kaolin clay particles on the phosphate removal process was discussed by zeta potential, size particle distribution, FTIR and XPS. We showed that with the increase of Fe/P molar ratio, the interaction intensity of kaolin clay particles with Fe flocs was decreased by ferric chloride coagulation while firstly increased and then decreased by ferrate. This depends on the Fe species with positive charge from ferric chloride hydrolysis and ferrate decomposition. Phosphate can inhibit the formation of FeOH²⁺ and Fe(OH)₂⁺ in the ferric chloride hydrolysis but promote the formation of FeOOH and Fe(OH)₂⁺ in the ferrate decomposition. Kaolin clay particles can more remarkably promote phosphate removal by ferrate than by ferric chloride.
