Diversification of Bromelioideae (Bromeliaceae) in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest: A case study in Aechmea subgenus Ortgiesia

Genome Skimming Reveals Widespread Hybridization in a Neotropical Flowering Plant Radiation

The tropics hold at least an order of magnitude greater plant diversity than the temperate zone, yet the reasons for this difference are still subject to debate. Much of tropical plant diversity is in highly speciose genera and understanding the drivers of such high species richness will help solve the tropical diversity enigma. Hybridization has recently been shown to underlie many adaptive radiations, but its role in the evolution of speciose tropical plant genera has received little attention. Here, we address this topic in the hyperdiverse Bromeliaceae genus Vriesea using genome skimming data covering the three genomic compartments. We find evidence for hybridization in ca. 11% of the species in our dataset, both within the genus and between Vriesea and other genera, which is commensurate with hybridization underlying the hyperdiversity of Vriesea, and potentially other genera in Tillandsioideae. While additional genomic research will be needed to further clarify the contribution of hybridization to the rapid diversification of Vriesea, our study provides an important first data point suggesting its importance to the evolution of tropical plant diversity.

Early Diverging and Core Bromelioideae (Bromeliaceae) Reveal Contrasting Patterns of Genome Size Evolution and Polyploidy

The subfamily Bromelioideae is one of the most diverse groups among the neotropical Bromeliaceae. Previously, key innovations have been identified which account for the extraordinary radiation and species richness of this subfamily, especially in the so-called core Bromelioideae. However, in order to extend our understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms, the genomic mechanisms (e.g. polyploidy, dysploidy) that potentially underlie this accelerated speciation also need to be tested. Here, using PI and DAPI staining and flow cytometry we estimated genome size and GC content of 231 plants covering 30 genera and 165 species and combined it with published data. The evolutionary and ecological significance of all three genomic characters was tested within a previously generated dated phylogenetic framework using ancestral state reconstructions, comparative phylogenetic methods, and multiple regressions with climatic variables. The absolute genome size (2C) of Bromelioideae varied between 0.59 and 4.11 pg, and the GC content ranged between 36.73 and 41.43%. The monoploid genome sizes (Cx) differed significantly between core and early diverging lineages. The occurrence of dysploidy and polyploidy was, with few exceptions, limited to the phylogenetically isolated early diverging tank-less lineages. For Cx and GC content Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models outperformed the Brownian motion models suggesting adaptive potential linked to the temperature conditions. 2C-values revealed different rates of evolution in core and early diverging lineages also related to climatic conditions. Our results suggest that polyploidy is not associated with higher net diversification and fast radiation in core bromelioids. On the other hand, although coupled with higher extinction rates, dysploidy, polyploidy, and resulting genomic reorganizations might have played a role in the survival of the early diverging bromelioids in hot and arid environments.

Adaptive morphoanatomy and ecophysiology of Billbergia euphemiae, a hemiepiphyte Bromeliaceae

Abstract Habitats under distinct selective pressures exert adaptative pressures that can lead individuals of the same species to present different life strategies for their survival. The aim of this study was to analyse morphoanatomical and physiological traits for identification of adaptive ecological strategies related to both terrestrial and epiphytic life phases of Billbergia euphemiae. It was verified that B. euphemiae showed lower height, as well smaller length, width and foliar area in epiphytic phase than in terrestrial phase. Concerning to foliar anatomy, the thicknesses of leaf and water-storage parenchyma were higher in terrestrial phase, as densities of stomata and scales on the abaxial surface were higher in epiphytic phase. About the contents of photosynthetic pigments, only chlorophyll a/b ratio showed differences between life phases. In both habits, plants exhibited roots with absorption hair. In epiphytic phase, roots exhibited higher velamen thickness, smaller outer cortex, higher number of inner cortex cell layers and higher number of protoxylem poles. Thus, B. euphemiae individuals in epiphytic exhibited lots of traits related to water retention, once these plants are not into the ground. Besides, the plasticity observed may contribute for survival of this group in habitats submitted to modifications (e.g., climate change and other variations caused by human interference).
