Abstract
AIM To systematically evaluate the effect of smoking cessation training on nursing students' learning outcomes. DESIGN This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022373280). METHODS Ten electronic English and Chinese databases were searched to identify articles on nursing students' smoking cessation training from inception to October 2022. Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument was used to assess the methodological quality of eligible studies. RESULTS Twelve moderate methodological quality studies (three randomized controlled trials and nine quasi-experimental studies) with 2114 undergraduate nursing students were included. Teaching strategies included didactic lectures, collaborative learning, blended learning and the service-learning approach. Eight studies showed that the training significantly increased nursing students' knowledge of smoking cessation (p < 0.05) and three of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 0.83-1.31). Seven studies showed that training enhanced students' attitudes/motivation towards smoking cessation interventions significantly (p < 0.05) and two of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 1.11-1.84). Nine studies reported that students' self-efficacy improved significantly after training (p < 0.05) and six of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 0.98-2.18). Two one-group pre-post studies showed training significantly improved students' practice of 5 A's behavior (p < 0.05), with a small effect size (Cohen's d < 0.50). CONCLUSIONS This review showed that smoking cessation training had a positive and large effect on undergraduate nursing students' knowledge, attitudes/motivation and self-efficacy towards smoking cessation intervention, but the effect of changing the practice of 5 A's was modest. We noted that very few RCTs were done and most studies only used subjective measures. More robust experimental studies with long-term follow-up are warranted in evaluating nursing students' practice/behavior of smoking cessation intervention and patients' quitting outcomes. Blended and collaborative learning are recommended in smoking cessation education.

Abstract
With the development of big data technology, creating the ‘Digital Campus’ is a hot issue. For an increasing amount of data, traditional data mining algorithms are not suitable. The clustering algorithm is becoming more and more important in the field of data mining, but the traditional clustering algorithm does not take the clustering efficiency and clustering effect into consideration. In this paper, the algorithm based on K-Means and clustering by fast search and find of density peaks (K-CFSFDP) is proposed, which improves on the distance and density of data points. This method is used to cluster students from four universities. The experiment shows that K-CFSFDP algorithm has better clustering results and running efficiency than the traditional K-Means clustering algorithm, and it performs well in large scale campus data. Additionally, the results of the cluster analysis show that the students of different categories in four universities had different performances in living habits and learning performance, so the university can learn about the students’ behavior of different categories and provide corresponding personalized services, which have certain practical significance.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review to examine the effectiveness of tobacco dependence education versus usual or no tobacco dependence education on entry-level health professional student practice and client smoking cessation. Sixteen published databases, seven grey literature databases/websites, publishers’ websites, books, and pertinent reference lists were searched. Studies from 16 health professional programs yielded 28 RCTs with data on 4343 healthcare students and 3122 patients. Two researchers independently assessed articles and abstracted data about student knowledge, self-efficacy, performance of tobacco cessation interventions, and patient smoking cessation. All forms of tobacco were included. We did not find separate interventions for different kinds of tobacco such as pipes or flavoured tobacco. We computed effect sizes using a random-effects model and applied meta-analytic procedures to 13 RCTs that provided data for meta-analysis. Students’ counseling skills increased significantly following the 5As model (SMD = 1.03; 95% CI 0.07, 1.98; p < 0.00001, I2 94%; p = 0.04) or motivational interviewing approach (SMD = 0.90, 95% CI 0.59, 1.21; p = 0.68, I2 0%; p < 0.00001). With tobacco dependence counseling, 78 more patients per 1000 (than control) reported quitting at 6 months (OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.49, 2.74, I2 = 0%, p = 0.76; p < 0.00001), although the strength of evidence was moderate or low. Student tobacco cessation counseling improved guided by the above models, active learning strategies, and practice with standardized patients.

A Face-Aging Smoking Prevention/Cessation Intervention for Nursery School Students in Germany: An Appearance-Focused Interventional Study. Abstract
The Education Against Tobacco (EAT) network delivers smoking prevention advice in secondary schools, typically using the mirroring approach (i.e., a “selfie” altered with a face-aging app and shared with a class). In November 2017, however, the German assembly of EAT opted to expand its remit to include nursing students. To assess the transferability of the existing approach, we implemented it with the self-developed face-aging app “Smokerface” (=mixed − methods approach) in six nursing schools. Anonymous questionnaires were used to assess the perceptions of 197 students (age 18–40 years; 83.8% female; 26.4% smokers; 23.3% daily smokers) collecting qualitative and quantitative data for our cross-sectional study. Most students perceived the intervention to be fun (73.3%), but a minority disagreed that their own animated selfie (25.9%) or the reaction of their peers (29.5%) had motivated them to stop smoking. The impact on motivation not to smoke was considerably lower than experienced with seventh graders (63.2% vs. 42.0%; notably, more smokers also disagreed (45.1%) than agreed (23.5%) with this statement. Agreement rates on the motivation not to smoke item were higher in females than in males and in year 2–3 than in year 1 students. Potential improvements included greater focus on pathology (29%) and discussing external factors (26%). Overall, the intervention seemed to be appealing for nursing students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence of tobacco use among nurses and nursing students is disproportionally high in Germany. However, from a public health perspective they are considered to be an important group for delivering smoking cessation interventions. As delivery of tobacco-related treatment depends on own smoking status, smoking prevention and cessation among the nursing professions is indicative for improving nurse and public health. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility and effects of a comprehensive tobacco prevention and reduction program on psychosocial and environmental factors related to smoking behavior of nursing students. METHODS Between 2014 and 2015, a non-randomized, controlled feasibility study was conducted in 12 schools of nursing with 397 nursing students in Germany. Students in the intervention group received a program (ASTRA) consisting of an introductory session, steering committee workshop, stress prevention lessons, evidence-based smoking cessation intervention, and action project. Six months after baseline assessment, change in smoking-related protective and risk factors was determined. Secondary endpoints included smoking behavior. RESULTS The program was implemented in total in 5 of 7 intervention schools. About one third of smoking nursing students participated in a cessation intervention. The program seems to do better than a minimal intervention booklet in four primary outcomes: perceived descriptive, subjective, and injunctive norms towards smoking and nursing as well as perceived social support. As anticipated, there was no change in smoking behavior. CONCLUSIONS The applied approach is feasible and able to improve important smoking-related norm perceptions of student nurses and perception of social support. However, additional context measures to influence the settings of nursing education currently rather supporting smoking seem to be necessary in order to promote smoking cessation among nursing students and to scale up implementation of the program.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effectiveness of a tobacco control course on the improvement of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about smoking among health sciences' students. METHODS This was a quasi-experimental study of community intervention carried out during the years 2005-2008, at 2 university health science centres in northwest Spain. A total of 290 students on the intervention and 256 on the control campus took part in the study. The intervention consisted of a course on the prevention and control of tobacco use offered only on the intervention campus. Data were collected before the intervention and 6 months afterwards. RESULTS After the course, significant differences between groups were observed in the improvement of knowledge, attitudes and perceived ability to act in tobacco control. CONCLUSIONS The introduction of training concerning smoking through active methodologies had a positive impact on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about tobacco of students.

Abstract
ISSUES There are 17.3 million nurses worldwide, the largest group of health-care professionals, and they have great potential to address the epidemic of tobacco use and its related morbidity and mortality. However, the evidence indicates that the educational preparation of nurses for tobacco control remains inadequate. APPROACH This paper provides an overview of the efficacy of nurses in the delivery of smoking cessation interventions, existing tobacco control content in nursing educational programs, model curricula, teaching resources and strategies for reducing barriers to curricular change. KEY FINDINGS Despite the efficacy of nursing intervention for tobacco cessation, lack of appropriate knowledge and/or skill presents a major problem for implementation. An important factor fostering this lack of preparation is limited tobacco control content in current nursing educational programs. Barriers to enhancing and building this curricula include lack of preparation of educators, low priority for this content in an already overloaded curricula, negative attitudes, continued smoking by nursing students and/or faculty and lack of tested curricula. The availability of new tobacco control resources, including those specifically tailored for nurses can assist educators in teaching this content and nurses in implementing interventions. IMPLICATIONS Research and changes in policy are needed to ensure that nursing education includes essential content on tobacco control. CONCLUSION Nurses can be effective in delivering tobacco cessation interventions. Efforts are needed to promote curriculum that ensures that all nursing students and practicing nurses receive tobacco control content and are competent in the delivery of interventions; and to disseminate resources to nursing educators

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe the frequency of nurses' delivery of tobacco cessation interventions ('Five A's': Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) and to determine the relationship of interventions to nurses' awareness of the Tobacco Free Nurses initiative. BACKGROUND Tobacco cessation interventions can be effectively provided by nurses. The delivery of smoking cessation interventions by healthcare providers is mandated by several organisations in the USA and around the world. Lack of education and resources about tobacco cessation may contribute to the minimal level of interventions. The Tobacco Free Nurses initiative was developed to provide nurses with easy access to web-based resources about tobacco control. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey of nurses (n = 3482) working in 35 Magnet-designated hospitals in the USA (21% response rate). METHOD A valid and reliable questionnaire used in previous studies to assess the frequency of the nurse's delivery of smoking cessation interventions ('Five A's') was adapted for use on the web. RESULTS The majority of nurses asked (73%) and assisted (73%) with cessation. However, only 24% recommended pharmacotherapy. Only 22% referred to community resources and only 10% recommended use of the quitline. Nurses familiar with TFN (15%) were significantly more likely to report delivery of all aspects of interventions, including assisting with cessation (OR = 1.55, 95% CI 1.27, 1.90) and recommending medications (OR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.45, 2.24). CONCLUSIONS Nurses' delivery of comprehensive smoking cessation interventions was suboptimal. Awareness of Tobacco Free Nurses was associated with increased interventions. Relevance to clinical practice. Further efforts are needed to ensure that nurses incorporate evidence-based interventions into clinical practice to help smokers quit. These findings support the value of Tobacco Free Nurses in providing nurses with information to support patients' quit attempts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous reviews have identified problems in the design and analysis of group-randomized trials in a number of areas. Similar problems may exist in cancer research, but there have been no comprehensive reviews. METHODS We searched Medline and PubMed for group-randomized trials focused on cancer prevention and control that were published between 2002 and 2006. We located and reviewed 75 articles to determine whether articles included evidence of taking group randomization into account in establishing the size of the trial, such as reporting the expected intraclass correlation, the group component of variance, or the variance inflation factor. We also examined the analytical approaches to determine their appropriateness. RESULTS Only 18 (24%) of the 75 articles documented appropriate methods for sample size calculations. Only 34 (45%) limited their reports to analyses judged to be appropriate. Fully 26 (34%) failed to report any analyses that were judged to be appropriate. The most commonly used inappropriate analysis was an analysis at the individual level that ignored the groups altogether. Nine articles (12%) did not provide sufficient information. CONCLUSIONS Many investigators who use group-randomized trials in cancer research do not adequately attend to the special design and analytic challenges associated with these trials. Failure to do so can lead to reporting type I errors as real effects, mislead investigators and policy-makers, and slow progress toward control and prevention of cancer. A collaborative effort by investigators, statisticians, and others will be required to ensure that group-randomized trials are planned and analyzed using appropriate methods so that the scientific community can have confidence in the published results.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To assess predictors of smoking cessation in young adults. DESIGN Prospective study of smoking cessation. SETTING 32 Schools of Nursing in Southwest Germany. PARTICIPANTS 500 student nurses, 82% female, median age 19.9 years, who smoked at baseline. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS Smoking status and potential predictors of smoking cessation were assessed by two questionnaires within a median time interval of 13.1 months. At follow-up, 10.6% of the participants had stopped smoking. Sleep duration was positively associated with smoking cessation. One hour additional sleep per night at baseline increased the relative probability to stop smoking by 1.48 (95% CI 1.14-1.93). The number of cigarettes per day and the 'self-assessment of smoking behaviour in 5 years' were additional factors predicting smoking cessation. CONCLUSIONS Sleep duration may influence smoking cessation and may have relevance for advising people who want to quit smoking.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine trends in smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as risk behaviors associated with alcohol and driving, among nursing students throughout the diploma in nursing. METHOD A longitudinal epidemiological study was performed in a cohort of 81 nursing students of the San Sebastian School of Nursing. Data were collected using a self-administrated, bilingual (Spanish-Basque) questionnaire completed voluntarily and anonymously. The questionnaire was distributed in one of the most highly attended lectures. RESULTS Ninety-one percent of the cohort (71 students) were women. The percentage of current smokers (25%, 26.7% and 26.9%) and current drinkers (70.4%, 69.7% and 69.6%) showed no change during the 3-year diploma. The percentage of students at risk of an alcohol-related traffic accident was very high and increased during the course (from 32.3% in the first year to 45% in the third). CONCLUSIONS The present study identifies unhealthy habits and behaviors that do not improve during the diploma in nursing, suggesting that nursing studies do not always help to encourage healthy habits. Therefore, health education programs should be developed to promote healthy habits and life styles.
