Brain Allometry Across Macroevolutionary Scales in Squamates Suggests a Conserved Pattern in Snakes

Inside the head of Crotalus durissus LINNAEUS, 1758 (Serpentes, Viperidae, Crotalinae): Macroscopic description of the brain with ontogenetic insights

Neuroanatomy studies in vertebrates have garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly driven by advancements in computerized tomography imaging techniques. Nonetheless, these advancements remain largely constrained to specific vertebrate groups, notably mammals, birds, and fish, leaving studies in reptiles at an incipient stage. In this work, we aim to describe in detail the macroscopic morphology of the brain of Crotalus durissus based on a sample of four young and four adult individuals-three male and five female specimens, providing the first detailed description of the brain with a relatively modest sample available for reptiles. Our results show that the major macroscopic features identified in C. durissus suggest a brain structure typical of a multi-habitat and cathemeral/nocturnal alethinophidian species, thereby contributing significant data to the understanding of brain morphological evolution in snakes. Brain measurements showed distinct scaling patterns related to snout-vent length and head length, with variables such as brain length and cerebral hemisphere length decreasing with SVL, while others like olfactory bulb length and medulla oblongata width increased. Additional differences were observed comparing juveniles and adults, with adults generally exhibiting larger mean values for cerebellum and medulla oblongata measurements. However, the small sample size highlights the need for future studies with larger datasets to validate these findings and explore the developmental trajectories in greater detail.

Does death drive the scaling of life?

The magnitude of many kinds of biological structures and processes scale with organismal size, often in regular ways that can be described by power functions. Traditionally, many of these "biological scaling" relationships have been explained based on internal geometric, physical, and energetic constraints according to universal natural laws, such as the "surface law" and "3/4-power law". However, during the last three decades it has become increasingly apparent that biological scaling relationships vary greatly in response to various external (environmental) factors. In this review, I propose and provide several lines of evidence supporting a new ecological perspective that I call the "mortality theory of ecology" (MorTE). According to this viewpoint, mortality imposes time limits on the growth, development, and reproduction of organisms. Accordingly, small, vulnerable organisms subject to high mortality due to predation and other environmental hazards have evolved faster, shorter lives than larger, more protected organisms. A MorTE also includes various corollary, size-related internal and external causative factors (e.g. intraspecific resource competition, geometric surface area to volume effects on resource supply/transport and the protection of internal tissues from environmental hazards, internal homeostatic regulatory systems, incidence of pathogens and parasites, etc.) that impact the scaling of life. A mortality-centred approach successfully predicts the ranges of body-mass scaling slopes observed for many kinds of biological and ecological traits. Furthermore, I argue that mortality rate should be considered the ultimate (evolutionary) driver of the scaling of life, that is expressed in the context of other proximate (functional) drivers such as information-based biological regulation and spatial (geometric) and energetic (metabolic) constraints.

Exploring potential drivers of brain size variation in the electric fish Brachyhypopomus occidentalis

Characterizing the factors that shape variation in brain size in natural populations is crucial to understanding the evolution of brain size in animals. Here, we explore how relative brain size and brain allometry vary with drainage, predation risk and sex in natural populations of the electric knifefish Brachyhypopomus occidentalis. Fish were sampled from high and low predation risk sites within two independent river drainages in eastern and central Panamá. Overall, we observed low variation in brain-body size allometric slopes associated with drainage, predation risk and sex category. However, we observed significant differences in allometric intercepts between predation risk sites. We also found significant differences in relative brain mass associated with drainage, as well as significant differences in absolute brain mass associated with drainage, predation risk and sex category. Our results suggest potential constraints in brain-body allometry across populations of B. occidentalis. However, both drainage and predation risk may be playing a role in brain mass variation among populations. We suggest that variation in brain mass in electric fishes is affected by multiple extrinsic and intrinsic factors, including geography, environmental complexity, social interaction and developmental or functional constraints.

The evolution of brain neuron numbers in amniotes

The evolution of brain processing capacity has traditionally been inferred from data on brain size. However, similarly sized brains of distantly related species can differ in the number and distribution of neurons, their basic computational units. Therefore, a finer-grained approach is needed to reveal the evolutionary paths to increased cognitive capacity. Using a new, comprehensive dataset, we analyzed brain cellular composition across amniotes. Compared to reptiles, mammals and birds have dramatically increased neuron numbers in the telencephalon and cerebellum, which are brain parts associated with higher cognition. Astoundingly, a phylogenetic analysis suggests that as few as four major changes in neuron–brain scaling in over 300 million years of evolution pave the way to intelligence in endothermic land vertebrates.

Reconstructing the evolution of brain information-processing capacity is paramount for understanding the rise of complex cognition. Comparative studies of brain evolution typically use brain size as a proxy. However, to get a less biased picture of the evolutionary paths leading to high cognitive power, we need to compare brains not by mass but by numbers of neurons, which are their basic computational units. This study reconstructs the evolution of brains across amniotes by directly analyzing neuron numbers by using the largest dataset of its kind and including essential data on reptiles. We show that reptiles have not only small brains relative to body size but also low neuronal densities, resulting in average neuron numbers over 20 times lower than those in birds and mammals of similar body size. Amniote brain evolution is characterized by the following four major shifts in neuron–brain scaling. The most dramatic increases in brain neurons occurred independently with the appearance of birds and mammals, resulting in convergent neuron scaling in the two endotherm lineages. The other two major increases in the number of neurons happened in core land birds and anthropoid primates, which are two groups known for their cognitive prowess. Interestingly, relative brain size is associated with relative neuronal cell density in reptiles, birds, and primates but not in other mammals. This has important implications for studies using relative brain size as a proxy when looking for evolutionary drivers of animal cognition.
