Abstract
This work presents a simple and low-cost analytical approach to detect adulterations in ground roasted coffee by using voltammetry and chemometrics. The voltammogram of a coffee extract (prepared as simulating a home-made coffee cup) obtained with a single working electrode is submitted to pattern recognition analysis preceded by variable selection to detect the addition of coffee husks and sticks (adulterated/unadulterated), or evaluate the shelf-life condition (expired/unexpired). Two pattern recognition methods were tested: linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with variable selection by successive projections algorithm (SPA), or genetic algorithm (GA); and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Both LDA models presented satisfactory results. The voltammograms were also evaluated for the quantitative determination of the percentage of impurities in ground roasted coffees. PLS and multivariate linear regression (MLR) preceded by variable selection with SPA or GA were evaluated. An excellent predictive power (RMSEP = 0.05%) was obtained with MLR aided by GA.

Abstract
Background: Amiloride (AMI) and triamterene (TRI) are both potassium-saving diuretics, which are ordinarily used as doping to enhance the performance of athletes in sports. For the similar structures and complex matrices existence, chromatography and extraction are commonly employed to realize the determination of AMI and TRI in biological fluids, which are very time-consuming and laborious. Results: A novel method is presented to simultaneous interference-free determination of AMI and TRI in complex biological fluids samples using excitation–emission matrix fluorescence coupled with second-order calibration method based on alternating normalization-weight error algorithm. Conclusion: The proposed method can obtain accurate qualitative and quantitative information of the analytes, even in the presence of the interference from complex biological fluids, which requires few prior purification and separation procedures.

Abstract
A fast analytical strategy of second-order calibration method based on the alternating trilinear decomposition algorithm (ATLD)-assisted high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was established for the simultaneous determination of eight flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, apigenin, galangin and chrysin) in propolis capsules samples. The chromatographic separation was implemented on a Wondasil™ C18 column (250mm×4.6mm, 5μm) within 13min with a binary mobile phase composed of water with 1% formic acid and methanol at a flow rate of 1.0mLmin(-1) after flavonoids were only extracted with methanol by ultrasound extraction for 15min. The baseline problem was overcome by considering background drift as additional compositions or factors as well as the target analytes, and ATLD was employed to handle the overlapping peaks from analytes of interest or from analytes and co-eluting matrix compounds. The linearity was good with the correlation coefficients no less than 0.9947; the limit of detections (LODs) within the range of 3.39-33.05ngmL(-1) were low enough; the accuracy was confirmed by the recoveries ranged from 91.9% to 110.2% and the root-mean-square-error of predictions (RMSEPs) less than 1.1μg/mL. The results indicated that the chromatographic method with the aid of ATLD is efficient, sensitive and cost-effective and can realize the resolution and accurate quantification of flavonoids even in the presence of interferences, thus providing an alternative method for accurate quantification of analytes especially when the complete separation is not easily accomplished. The method was successfully applied to propolis capsules samples and the satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract
A novel chemometric-assisted high performance liquid chromatography method coupled with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was presented for the simultaneous determination of eleven antihypertensives from multiple classes in most concerned matrix systems. With the aid of second-order calibration which enables specific information of analytes to be well extracted, the heavily overlapping profiles between analytes and the coeluting interferences can be successfully separated and thus accurately quantified. A great advantage of the novel strategy lies in the fact that the analysis could be carried out with the same isocratic mobile phase (methanol/KH(2)PO(4): 58:42, v/v, pH 2.60) in a short time regardless of the changes of matrices, such as human serum, health product and Chinese patent medicine. Both qualitative and quantitative results indicate that the hybrid strategy that using HPLC-DAD coupled with second-order chemometric method would be a high performance approach for the purpose of simultaneously quantifying multiple classes of antihypertensives in complex systems. Additionally, the analytical strategy can potentially benefit drug monitoring in both therapeutic research and pharmaceutical quality control. Moreover, the accuracy and reliability of the proposed methodology has been evaluated using several statistical parameters such as root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP), figures of merit (FOM) and reproducibility of inter-day analysis.

Abstract
In this work, a batch chemiluminescence (CL) method has been proposed for the simultaneous determination of two structurally similar alkaloids, noscapine and thebaine. The method is based on the kinetic distinction of the CL reactions of noscapine and thebaine with Ru(bipy)(3)(2+) and Ce(IV) system in a sulfuric acid medium. The least squared support vector machine (LS-SVM) regression was applied for relating the concentrations of both compounds to their CL profiles. The parameters of the model consisting of sigma(2) and gamma were optimized by constructing LS-SVM models with all possible combinations of these two parameters to select the model with the minimum root mean squared error of cross validation (RMSECV) as the best. The parameters of this model were then selected as optimized values. Under the optimized experimental conditions for both compounds, the detection limits obtained using the LS-SVM regression were 0.08 and 0.1 micromo lL(-1) for noscapine and thebaine, respectively. The proposed method was utilized for the simultaneous determination of the compounds in pharmaceutical formulations and plasma samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A sensitive excitation-emission fluorescence method with a second-order calibration strategy is proposed to simultaneously determine abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA) contents in extracts of leaves and buds of ginkgo. The methodology is based on the alternating normalization-weighed error (ANWE) and the parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) algorithms, which make it possible that the ABA and GA concentration can be attained in extract of plants even in the presence of unknown interference from potential interfering matrix contaminants introduced during the simple pretreatment procedure. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained although the excitation and emission profiles of the analytes were heavily overlapped with each other and the background in the extracts. The limits of detection obtained for GA and ABA in leaf samples were 9.6 and 6.9 ng mL-1, respectively, which were in the concentration range (from hundreds to several ng g-1) for GA and ABA in leaves in different periods. Furthermore, in order to investigate the performance of the developed method, some statistical parameters and figures of merit of ANWE and PARAFAC are evaluated. The method proposed lights a new avenue to determine quantitatively phytohormones in extracts of plants with a simple pretreatment procedure, and may hold potential to be extended as a promising alternative for more practical applications in plant growth processes.

Abstract
Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is a phytohormone of the auxin group and is capable of coordinating the overall processes of plant growth and development. IAA is active in the very low concentration range. Therefore, it is important to quantify IAA in the low concentration range in complex system. In this work, a new spectrofluorometric method for the direct determination of IAA in soil is proposed and discussed. It combines the fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) with second-order calibration methods based on the alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) algorithm and the self-weighed alternating trilinear decomposition (SWATLD) algorithm. These methodologies fully exploit the second-order advantage of the three-way fluorescence data, allowing the analyte concentrations to be quantified even in the presence of unknown fluorescent interferents. IAA recoveries in soil were determined as 100.6 +/- 3.0 and 96.9 +/- 1.1% with ATLD and SWATLD, respectively. The limits of detection obtained were 17.6 and 4.6 ng mL(-1), and the limits of quantification were 52.9 and 13.9 ng mL(-1) with ATLD and SWATLD, respectively.

Abstract
A variable selection methodology based on genetic algorithm (GA) was applied in a bilinear least squares model (BLLS) with second-order advantage, in three distinct situations, for determination by HPLC-DAD of the pesticides carbaryl (CBL), methyl thiophanate (TIO), simazin (SIM) and dimethoate (DMT) and the metabolite phthalimide (PTA) in wine. The chromatographic separation was carried out using an isocratic elution with 50:50 (v/v) acetonitrile:water as mobile phase. Preprocessing methods were performed for correcting the chromatographic time shifts, baseline variation and background. The optimization by GA provided a significant reduction of the errors, where for SIM and PTA a decrease of three times the value obtained using all variables, and an improvement in the distribution of them, reducing the observed bias in the results were observed. Comparing the RMSEP of the optimized model with the uncertainty estimates of the reference values it is observed that GA can be a very useful tool in second-order models.

Abstract
This work presented an application of the second-order advantage provided by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) aiming at direct determination of propranolol, a beta-blocker also used as doping agent, in human urine by spectrofluorimetry. The adopted strategy combined the use of PARAFAC, for extraction of the pure analyte signal, with the standard addition method, for a determination in the presence of an individual matrix effect caused by the quenching action of the proteins present in the urine. The urine samples were previously 100 times diluted. For each sample, four standard additions were performed, in triplicates. A specific PARAFAC model was built for each triplicate of each sample, from three-way arrays formed by 231 emission wavelengths, 8 excitation wavelengths and 5 measurements (sample plus 4 additions). The models were built with three factors and always explained more than 99.87% of the total variance. The obtained loadings were related to PRO and two background interferences. The scores related to PRO were used for a linear regression in the standard addition method. The obtained determinations in the PRO concentration range from 5.0 to 20.0 microg ml(-1) provided recoveries between 91.1 and 108.4%.

Abstract
The models parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and the recently introduced bilinear least squares (BLLS) were applied to develop second-order calibration methods to high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) data, where overlap of interferences with the compounds of interest was observed, making the determination and resolution of the analytes possible. In this work, the simultaneous determination of five pesticides and two metabolites in wine samples by HPLC-DAD was performed, using the second-order advantage. The results of two chromatographic methods were compared, involving either isocratic or gradient elution. An appropriate preprocessing method was necessary to correct the effects of time shifts, baseline variations and background. BLLS presented results that were of the same quality as PARAFAC in five cases, but in two other situations only PARAFAC enabled analyte quantitation. Relative errors of prediction lower than 10% for all compounds were obtained, indicating that the methodology employing HLPC-DAD and second-order calibration can handle complex analytical systems.

Abstract
In this study a new spectrofluorimetric method for the direct determination of metoprolol in human plasma is presented and discussed. It is based on the use of fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) and second-order calibration performed with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) or alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD). This methodology enables accurate and reliable discrimination of the analyte signal, even in the presence of unknown and uncalibrated fluorescent component(s), which is often referred to as the second-order advantage. No separation or sample pretreatment steps were required. Satisfactory results were obtained. Metoprolol recoveries in plasma were determined as 87+/-2% and 90+/-4% with PARAFAC and ATLD, respectively. All RSD values of intra- and interday assays were below 5%.

Abstract
A novel method for simultaneous determination of cortisol and prednisolone in body fluids has been developed in this paper. Three-way data recorded by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) have been analyzed by second-order calibration based on the alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) algorithm. The chemometric methodology selected exploits the second-order advantage of the three-way data arrays, which allows one to obtain concentrations of individual calibrated analytes even in the presence of interferences not present in the calibration samples (e.g. background in urine or plasma). It was applied to simultaneous determination of cortisol and prednisolone in both plasma and urine samples. Though the chromatographic and spectral peaks of the analytes were heavily overlapped and interferents coeluted with the compounds studied, good recoveries of the analytes could be obtained with HPLC-DAD coupled with second-order calibration based on ATLD. Sample preparation was based on solvent extraction (SE), and quantification can be carried out with simple mobile phase. The time required for the quantification process is shorter than other methods.

Abstract
Sensitivity and selectivity are important figures of merit in multiway analysis, regularly employed for comparison of the analytical performance of methods and for experimental design and planning. They are especially interesting in the second-order advantage scenario, where the latter property allows for the analysis of samples with a complex background, permitting analyte determination even in the presence of unsuspected interferences. Since no general theory exists for estimating the multiway sensitivity, Monte Carlo numerical calculations have been developed for estimating variance inflation factors, as a convenient way of assessing both sensitivity and selectivity parameters for the popular parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis and also for related multiway techniques. When the second-order advantage is achieved, the existing expressions derived from net analyte signal theory are only able to adequately cover cases where a single analyte is calibrated using second-order instrumental data. However, they fail for certain multianalyte cases, or when third-order data are employed, calling for an extension of net analyte theory. The results have strong implications in the planning of multiway analytical experiments.

Abstract
Four-way fluorescence data recorded by following the kinetic evolution of excitation-emission fluorescence matrices (EEMs) have been analyzed by parallel factor analysis and trilinear least-squares algorithms. These methodologies exploit the second-order advantage of the studied data, allowing analyte concentrations to be estimated even in the presence of an uncalibrated fluorescent background. They were applied to the simultaneous determination of the components of the anticancer combination of methotrexate and leucovorin in human urine samples. Both analytes were converted into highly fluorescent compounds by oxidation with potassium permanganate, and the kinetics of the reaction was continuously monitored by recording full EEM of the samples at different reaction times. A commercial fast scanning spectrofluorometer has been used for the first time to measure the four-way EEM kinetic data. The rapid scanning instrument allows the acquisition of a complete EEM in 12 s at a wavelength scanning speed of 24 000 nm/min. The emission spectra were recorded from 335 to 490 nm at 5-nm intervals, exciting from 255 to 315 nm at 6-nm intervals. Ten successive EEMs were measured at 72-s intervals, to follow the fluorescence kinetic evolution of the mixture components. Good recoveries were obtained in synthetic binary samples and also in spiked urine samples. The excitation, emission, and kinetic time profiles recovered by both chemometric techniques are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Abstract
The analytical performances of two algorithms, the recently introduced bilinear least-squares (BLLS) and the popular parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), are compared as regards second-order fluorescence data recorded for the determination of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin in human urine samples. The applied chemometric methodologies employ different strategies for exploiting the so-called second-order advantage, which allows one to obtain individual concentrations of calibrated analytes in the presence of any number of uncalibrated (urine) components. Analysis of a spiked urine test set (in the analyte concentration range 0-200 mg L(-1)) showed that BLLS provides results of slightly better quality than PARAFAC. Satisfactory results have been obtained on comparing the concentrations predicted for a series of real urine samples with those furnished by liquid chromatography. The limit of detection of the fluorescence-based methods is approximately 5 mg L(-1).

Abstract
Three-way fluorescence data and multivariate calibration based on parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) are combined for the simultaneous quantitation of three fluoroquinolone anitibiotics (norfloxacin, enoxacin, and ofloxacin) in human serum samples. The three analytes can be adequately determined with limits of detection of 0.2, 3.0, and 0.5 microg L(-1), respectively, with minimum experimental effort. The selected analytical methodology fully exploits the so-called second-order advantage of the employed three-way data, allowing obtaining individual concentrations of calibrated analytes in the presence of any number of uncalibrated (serum) components. In contrast to PARAFAC, less satisfactory results were obtained with a multidimensional partial least-squares (nPLS) model trained with the same calibration set.
