Ab initio study of ammonia adsorption states on an ice surface II: theoretical characterization of the surface bound state

Transition-State Characterization of the Ammonia Ionization Process in Aqueous Solution via the Free-Energy Gradient Method

For the ionization process of ammonia in aqueous solution, the transition-state (TS) structure was fully optimized for the first time on the free-energy surface (FES) by applying the free-energy gradient (FEG) method combined with a hybrid quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical molecular dynamics (QM/MM-MD) method. In aqueous solution, the ionization process was found to proceed by way of a clear TS (R(N1-H5) = 1.512 A), which does not exist in the gas phase. The free-energy (FE) of activation for ionization obtained was 14.7 kcal/mol, within the classical approximation, via the QM/MM-MD FEG method, and is found to be in good agreement with 9.57 kcal/mol estimated from the TS theory using the experimental value of the rate constant. Apart from the dynamic correction, it is indicated that the theoretical value would be improved to be 10.28 kcal/mol if the electronic-state calculation could be executed at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory.

Hydrogen bonding interactions between adsorbed polymer molecules and crystal surface of acetaminophen

The objective of this work was to investigate whether or not the hydrogen bonding interaction between polymer and crystal surface can be detected by the etching pattern changes in the presence of polymers. The (010) face of acetaminophen single crystal was used as a model solid surface. The etching patterns on the (010) face of acetaminophen crystal by water are in the directions of a- and c-axes, which are the same as the directions of the dominant attachment energies on the (010) face. In the presence of polymer, the hydrogen bonding interactions between adsorbed polymer and crystal surface can affect surface diffusion of acetaminophen molecules and change the etching patterns in the direction of a-axis, i.e., the direction of one hydrogen bond chain. Studies with 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) showed that polymers, which can form hydrogen bonds with acetaminophen crystal surface, can change etching patterns in the direction of a-axis. Study with Dextran suggested that if a polymer cannot form hydrogen bonds with crystal surface due to steric repulsion, it will not change the etching pattern in the direction of a-axis. Studies with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) further confirmed that only if a polymer can form hydrogen bonds with acetaminophen on crystal surface, the etching patterns in the direction of a-axis will be affected. The study results suggest that in the presence of polymers, the etching pattern change in the direction of hydrogen bond chain, the a-axis of acetaminophen crystals, can be used to indicate the existence of the hydrogen bonding interactions between adsorbed polymers and acetaminophen crystal surface.

Ammonia adsorption on and diffusion into thin ice films grown on Pt(111)

Ammonia adsorption on and diffusion into thin ice films grown on a Pt(111) surface were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal desorption spectroscopy. After exposing the crystalline ice film to ammonia molecules at 45 K (ammonia/ice film), we have detected an intriguing feature at 1470 cm(-1) in the FTIR spectra, which is derived from the adsorption of ammonia on the ice with a characteristic structure which appears in thin film range. The peak intensity of this feature decreases gradually as the thickness of the substrate ice increases. In addition, we have detected a feature at 1260 cm(-1) which appears after annealing the ammonia/ice film. The feature corresponds to the ammonia molecules which reach the ice/Pt(111) interface through the ice film. Intriguingly, the intensity of this feature decreases with the ice thickness and there is a linear relation of the peak intensity of the features at 1470 and 1260 cm(-1). We propose a model in which the solubility of the ammonia molecules is much higher for the thin ice film than that for the ideal ice.
