Comparison and evaluation of copper complex-containing siloxane polymers as stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography

Recent advances in gas chromatography for solid and liquid stationary phases containing metal ions

This review is devoted to the application of metal complexes as column packings and liquid stationary phases in gas chromatography. Particular attention is paid to the stationary phases with nitrogen-containing functional groups (e.g., amine and ketoimine) and beta-diketonates on the modified silica surface. The review also concerns the results of the research on metallomesogenes and chiral stationary phases. The factors influencing the retention mechanism in complexation gas chromatography are discussed. Practical application of the metal chelate-containing chromatographic packings for analytical separation of organic substances is considered.

Separation of dialkyl sulfides by metallo-mesogenic stationary phases for complexation gas chromatography

A copper mesogenic side-chain polymer (P-C(15)CuC(18)) was cross-linked onto the capillary wall as a stationary film for gas chromatography (GC) separation of alkyl sulfides. These organic sulfides are of interest for their large health impact because of their wide range of volatiles and high reactivities toward metals. Different GC parameters for optimal separation efficiency are discussed for use with a mesogenic polymer column along with flame photometric detection (FPD). Both the carrier gas flow-rate and column temperature were studied to determine the relationship of plate height to the chemical structure of the solutes, as well as to determine the morphology of the mesogenic polymer. Van 't Hoff plots show phase transitions of the stationary mesophase as the column temperature was varied. The results reveal that the separation mechanism might be based on ligand exchange and polarity interaction between the analytes and the stationary phase, with the vapor pressure of the analytes also being important. The former interaction dominates in the lamellar crystalline phase and the latter interaction dominates in the hexagonal columnar-discotic phase. With high reproducibility for retention time (RSD< or =0.37%) and for peak area (RSD< or =5.16%), the GC-FPD system produced linear calibration graphs (r> or =0.9918) for the determination of 13 sulfides with a detection limit below 2.5 ng.

Fabrication and characterization of open-tubular CEC modified with tentacle-type metal-chelating polymer chains

A novel stationary phase with tentacle-type metal-chelating polymer chains was fabricated for open-tubular CEC. The preparation procedure of the stationary phase included the synthesis of monomer, silanization of capillary inner wall, in situ polymerization, and metal complexation. The effects of initiator concentration and reaction time on the column capacity were investigated. To compare with the tentacle-type metal-chelating capillary column, a monolayer ligand-modified capillary was also prepared. Immobilized copper(II) capacity of the tentacle-type polymer stationary phase was nearly 900 times higher than that of the monolayer one. The electroosmotic mobility was examined for its dependence on pH as well as phosphate and ACN concentrations. The tentacle-type metal-chelating capillary with high ligand capacity has proven to afford better retention and resolution for the separation of phenylalanine, tryptophan, and tyrosine mixtures and three purine derivatives. The separation was considered to be effected by a combination of ligand exchange and electrophoretic mobility.

Metallomesogenic stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

A synthetic coppermesogenic polymer is prepared and then covalently bonded to the siloxane-based deactivated column as the stationary phases of open-tubular CEC with essentially high phase ratio. The EOF generated from the modified phase is surveyed through conventional aqueous buffers and hydroorganic mobile phases. Zeta potentials, which are computed from the EOF data and the ratio of dielectric constant to viscosity, are plotted as a function of pH, ionic molarity, and compositional range. These plots responsible for the electroosmotic characteristic of the bonded phases are found to be like those of bare fused-silica or deactivated columns through decreasing or increasing the ACN content in the mobile phase, respectively. This two-phase characteristic is basically derived from the polymeric configuration with carboxylato ligands attached onto the polysiloxane backbone. Phthalates and amino acids are suitable probes to examine the two phenomena, more-polar and less-polar mediums, respectively, and to judge whether the chromatographic retention is the major source of separation mechanism. With the mixing modes of Lewis acid-base interaction, dispersive force, and shape discrimination, the chromatographic partition adequately accomplishes the uneasily resolved separations by only CZE mode, although the electrophoretic migration is truly somewhat involved.

Preparation and evaluation of nickelmesogen for micropacked gas chromatography

The preparation and mesomorphic properties of a substituted bis(dithiolene)nickel complex derived from 4, 4'-dimethoxybenzil are reported. The phase transition temperatures were based on data obtained by polarized light microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The mesogenic phase existed over the temperature range from 77 to 175 degrees C. A novel micropacked column (1.5 or 3 m x 1 mm i.d.) prepared from the slurry of bis[1,2-bis(4-n-undecyloxyphenyl)ethane-1,2-dithiolene] nickel(II) (5%, w/w), coated on Chromosorb W was applied for the separation of dialkyl sulfides. The non-linearity (discontinuity) of Van't Hoff plots suggests that the liquid crystal property existed even in the coated phase. Factors affecting the retention and the sample selectivity on the prepared column were examined by using a flame photometric detector (FPD). The separation might be based on the mechanism of ligand exchange, shape selectivity and polarity interaction besides the vapor pressure. LOD for the determination of dialkyl sulfides was below 1 ng for most of the analytes.

Polystyrene monolithic column functionalized with copper-iminodiacetate complex as a stationary phase for open tubular capillary electrochromatography

Polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer functionalized with copper-iminodiacetate complex was prepared in situ for the capillary electrochromatographic separation of amino acids and oligopeptides. The steps included silanization of the fused-silica capillary column, functionalization, polymerization, hydrolysis and complexation. For having a homogeneous polymerization system in the selected porogen, the functional monomer was obtained from the reaction of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride and diethyl iminodiacetate. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the polymeric monolith column was an open tubular column with a thickness of 0.3 microm. Various modes of hydrolysis were investigated via the electroosmatic flow measurement to find the optimization condition prior to introducing the copper ion. The influence of pH, composition and concentration of mobile phase as well as the organic modifier were investigated. Judging from our results, the recognition performance of the prepared stationary phase might be integrated from the mechanisms of ligand exchange, electrophoretic mobility, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding.
