Novel ion chromatographic stationary phases for the analysis of complex matrices

Ion chromatography (IC) has a proven track record in the determination of inorganic and organic anions and cations in complex matrices. Recently, application of IC to the separation and determination of bio-molecules such as amino acids, carbohydrates, nucleotides, proteins and peptides has also received much attention. The key to the determination of all of the above species in the most analytically challenging complex matrices is the ability to manipulate selectivity through control of stationary phase chemistry, mobile phase chemistry and the choice of detection method. This Tutorial Review summarises some of the most significant recent advances made in IC stationary phase technology. In particular, the review details stationary phases specifically designed for ion analysis in complex sample matrices, and considers in which direction future stationary phase development might proceed.

Using ultrapure water in ion chromatography to run analyses at the ng/L level

Thanks to enhanced capabilities, ion chromatography (IC) occupies an increasing position in many types of applications. Achieving ideal performances for an extended life-time can only be reached, however, if the IC system is operated in optimum experimental conditions. Among the various parameters that need to be controlled, water is particularly important, because it is used throughout the analysis, from sample preparation to column rinsing, elution, and mobile phase preparation. More and more, devices are included in IC systems to generate the eluent in situ, and ultrapure water becomes the major reagent. Data of pre-concentration of high purity water show that detection limits at the ng/L level can be expected with water purified using the right combination of technologies.

Simultaneous determination of six inorganic anions in drinking water by non-suppressed ion chromatography

A non-suppressed ion chromatographic method with conductometric detection is described for the simultaneous determination of six inorganic anions: fluoride, chloride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate and sulphate. The separation was achieved on a low-capacity anion-exchange column Metrohm IC Anion Column Super Sep, with a mobile phase consisting of phtalic acid dissolved in high-purity water, 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propendiol and acetonitrile. In this work computer optimization procedures, using computer programs to select chromatographic conditions have been used, leading to the achievement of a desired separation. By using the different optimization methods in an integrated manner it is, however, possible to both speed method development, by reducing unnecessary experimentation, and to overcome the many shortcomings of each method, because of the different approaches. The purpose of this work is to improve and characterise the method for simultaneous determination of six inorganic anions in drinking water by non-suppressed ion chromatography, using optimization procedures, in order to be applied to the routine analysis. The proposed method has numerous advantages over the other widely used non-suppressed ion chromatography methods: higher selectivity, shorter analysis time, lower quantitation and detection limits. The performance characteristics of the method were established by determining the following validation parameters: precision and accuracy, linearity, detection limits and quantitation limits.

Advances in the determination of inorganic anions by ion chromatography

The time period covered for this review includes articles published from 1997 to 1999, with the addition of a few classic references. The purpose of the review is to include the most relevant works from each topic area of the determination of inorganic anions by ion chromatography, including new sample pretreatments, new separation methods, new detection systems and the latest applications in the field of environmental, water, foods, etc. samples. Experimental conditions such as stationary phase, eluent, detection mode, as well as matrix are summarized in a table.
