Effect of phenyl numbers in polyphenyl ligand on retention properties of aromatic stationary phases

Aromatic phase, as one type of reversed-phase stationary phases, shows complementary selectivity to the n-alkyl counterparts especially for certain challenging separation tasks. However, effect of phenyl numbers in aromatic ligands on retention behaviors has rarely been addressed compared with the alkyl stationary phases. To illustrate the issue, a series of polyphenyl stationary phases were facially prepared via the coupling chemistry of isocyanate with amine, including aniline (π¹), 4-aminobiphenyl (π²), 4-amino-p-terphenyl (π³) and [1,1':4',1'':4'',1'''-quaterphenyl]-4-amine (π⁴), respectively. The chromatographic behaviors of the new stationary phases as well as the traditional C18 were systematically compared in terms of retention mode, hydrophobic and aromatic selectivity, shape selectivity and π-π interaction by various analytes, including alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons congeners and substituted benzenes with electron-withdrawing groups. Due to the homologous structure of four polyphenyl ligands, the hydrophobic selectivity, aromatic selectivity and shape selectivity of stationary phases increase with phenyl numbers in the bonded polyphenyl ligands, whereas the increment becomes insignificant from U-π³ to U-π⁴. This phenomenon is explained by the insertion degree of analytes in the polyphenyl ligand brushes. Compared with the homemade C18, the polyphenyl phases indicate insignificant changes of shape selectivity with temperature. Notably, the new polyphenyl phases demonstrate the great selective separation towards the electron-deficient compounds through the π-π interaction. These findings make up for the understanding of the retention behavior of aromatic stationary phases.

An assessment of the retention behaviour of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on reversed phase stationary phases: Selectivity and retention on C18 and phenyl-type surfaces

In this manuscript the retention and selectivity of a set of linear and non-linear PAHs were evaluated on five different reversed-phase columns. These phases included C18 and C18 Aqua stationary phases, as well as three phenyl phases: Propyl-phenyl, Synergi polar-RP and Cosmosil 5PBB phase. Overall, the results revealed that the phenyl-type columns offered better separation performance for the linear PAHs, while the separation of the structural isomer PAHs was enhanced on the C18 columns. The Propyl-phenyl column was found to have the highest molecular-stationary phase interactions, as evidenced by the greatest rate of change in 'S' (0.71) as a function of the molecular weight in the PAH homologous series, despite having the lowest surface coverage (3% carbon load) (where S is the slope of a plot of logk versus the solvent composition). In contrast, the C18 Aqua column, having the highest surface coverage (15% carbon load) was found to have the second lowest molecular-stationary phase interactions (rate of change in S=0.61). Interestingly, the Synergi polar-RP column, which also is a phenyl stationary phase behaved more 'C18-like' than 'phenyl-like' in many of the tests undertaken. This is probably not unexpected since all five phases were reversed phase.

Investigations on the chromatographic behavior of hybrid reversed-phase materials containing electron donor–acceptor systems

The chromatographic behavior of three naphthalimide-type stationary phases were elucidated in terms of hydrophobic, silanophilic and pi-pi interaction properties, employing besides common chromatographic column test methods from Engelhardt and Tanaka, also new test mixtures of geometrical and functional aromatic isomers. It was found that the presence of electron donor/acceptor moieties within a reversed phase system did not only increase the overall retention times for aromatic solutes, but also lead to an enhanced shape selectivity of the hybrid stationary phase. In this context, shape discrimination is primarily based on the number of accessible pi-electrons for pi-pi interaction with the embedded electron deficient ligand moieties. The most outstanding results were obtained for the 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimidic selector with its horizontal arrangement on the silica surface, which enables a direct face-to-face pi-pi interaction with aromatic solutes, with only little hydrophobic contribution.

The DIVAM sequence: selective excitation of signals from both rigid and mobile domains in a fluoropolymer

Simulations have been carried out on z-magnetizations produced by (and hence of the resulting spectra from) the dipolar filter (DF) and the recently suggested "Discrimination Induced by Variable-Amplitude Minipulses" (DIVAM) pulse sequences [S. Ando et al., Polymer 42 (2001) 8137; Magn. Reson. Chem. 40 (2002) 97]. The strengths of dipolar interactions have been modelled by introducing different values for transverse relaxation times. The DF case has been extended by allowing the pulse angles to be smaller than 90 degrees. The pulse intervals have also been used as variables. For the DIVAM case, the variables are similarly the minipulse nutation angles and minipulse intervals. The computations show that DIVAM is superior to DF in terms of selectivity for spectra of heterogeneous materials such as semi-crystalline polymers. The effects of the pulse sequences on 19F spectra of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene (p(VDF/TrFE)) are presented, together with fits of the experimental results by the simulations.

New stationary phase for liquid chromatography with chemically bonded pinane ligand: synthesis and characterization by nuclear magnetic resonance and high-performance liquid chromatographic investigations

A new bicyclic phase for liquid chromatography was prepared by solution polymerization approaches. To introduce a C4 spacer the starting molecule 3-formylpinane was reduced to the alcohol followed by a substitution of the hydroxy group through a bromide. The obtained halide reacted with magnesium and allyl bromide to the 3-(but-3'-enyl)pinane which was hydrosilylated with trichlorosilane and finally immobilized to silica gels with different pore sizes using the technique of solution polymerization. To elucidate the structure of 3-(but-3'-enyl)pinane high-resolution two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were carried out. The new phases were characterized, on the one hand by employing 13C and 29Si solid-state NMR spectroscopy and on the other hand, by separating a standard test mixture consisting of mainly monosubstituted aromatic compounds. The results achieved in chromatography were correlated with the information gained from 29Si CP/MAS NMR measurements.

Characterization of polyalkylvinyl ether phases by solid-state and suspended-state nuclear magnetic resonance investigations

Pure organic polyalkvlvinyl ether phases were synthesized by suspension polymerization using different ratios and compositions of n-butylvinyl ether (C4VE) and n-octadecylvinyl ether (C18VE) with triethylene glycol divinyl ether or divinylbenzene as crosslinkers, respectively. These phases were investigated by means of solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and 1H high-resolution magic angle spinning (HR MAS) NMR spectroscopy in suspended-state. A comparison of these two methods showed the substantial advantages of 1H HR MAS NMR measurements. Structure elucidation was achieved using a 2D H,H-COSY NMR experiment performed under MAS conditions enabling full peak assignment of the 1H NMR spectra of these phases. The dynamic behavior of the polyalkylvinyl ether phases was determined by employing temperature-dependent measurements of spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) as well as accumulation of a 2D wide line separation NMR spectrum.
