Abstract
Iridium(I) compounds featuring bridge-functionalized bis-NHC ligands (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene), [Ir(cod)(bis-NHC)] and [Ir(CO)2(bis-NHC)], have been prepared from the appropriate carboxylate- or hydroxy-functionalized bis-imidazolium salts. The related complexes [Ir(cod)(NHC)2]+ and [IrCl(cod)(NHC)(cod)] have been synthesized from a 3-hydroxypropyl functionalized imidazolium salt. These complexes have been shown to be robust catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation of glycerol to lactate (LA) with dihydrogen release. High activity and selectivity to LA were achieved in an open system under low catalyst loadings using KOH as a base. The hydroxy-functionalized bis-NHC catalysts are much more active than both the carboxylate-functionalized ones and the unbridged bis-NHC iridium(I) catalyst with hydroxyalkyl-functionalized NHC ligands. In general, carbonyl complexes are more active than the related 1,5-cyclooctadiene ones. The catalyst [Ir(CO)2{(MeImCH2)2CHOH}]Br exhibits the highest productivity affording TONs to LA up to 15,000 at very low catalyst loadings.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) based systems are usually exploited in the exploration of catalytic mechanisms and processes in organocatalysis, and homo- and heterogeneous catalysis. However, their molecular structures have not received adequate attention. The NHC proligand methylenebis(N-butylimidazolium) has been synthesized as the acetonitrile solvate of the diiodide salt, C15H26N4(2+)·2I(-)·CH3CN [1,1'-methylenebis(3-butylimidazolium) diiodide acetonitrile monosolvate], and fully characterized. An interesting cation-anion connection pattern has been identified in the crystal lattice, in which three iodide anions interact simultaneously with the cisoid-oriented cation. A Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals the predominance of hydrogen bonding over anion-π interactions. This particular arrangement is observed in different methylene-bridged bis(imidazolium) cations bearing chloride or bromide counter-anions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with acetonitrile as solvent reproduce the geometry of the title cation.

Abstract
Newly synthesized heterometallic trinuclear M2Pt complexes (M = Rh, Ir) containing a platinum moiety having a chelated bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (bisNHC) ligand with a variety of alkylene chain lengths of the bridging part showed two reversible reduction waves in cyclic voltammetry. Only the second reduction potentials were affected by the alkyl chain lengths, which afforded different dihedral angles between the imidazolylidene rings and the platinum coordination plane resulting in the variation of π-back-donation from the platinum center to the carbene carbon atoms.

Abstract
Bis(imidazolium) iodides (bis-Im(+)I(-)s) are synthesized with different substituents and used as electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Three kinds of low-volatility electrolytes are prepared by using 1,1'-methylene bis(3-imidazolium) diiodide (MIDI), 1,1'-methylene bis(3-n-methylimidazolium) diiodide (MMIDI), and 1,1'-methylene-bis(3-n-ethylimidazolium) diiodide (MEIDI) as the iodide sources. The effects of these substituents on the photovoltaic performance of the cells are investigated. It is found that the device shows a lower short-circuit photocurrent (Jsc), higher open-voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF) with the increased cation size in electrolyte. These results are explained by electrostatic interactions between the solvated Im(+) and the negatively charged species. Meanwhile, the explanation is supported by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), open circuit voltage decay (OCVD), and dark current measurements.
