Spermatic cord liposarcoma in a young boy

[Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord: a case report]

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the article is to summarize experience in the pathology, diagnosis and treatment of spermatic cord liposarcoma (SCL).

METHODS

The clinical data of a patient with liposarcoma of the spermatic cord was reviewed in combination with related literature.

RESULTS

A 24-year-old male presented with a 1-year history of a mass in the right hemiscrotum. The tumor was resected and right inguinal orchidectomy was performed. The tumor had not recurred after 6 months follow-up.

CONCLUSION

Spermatic cord liposarcoma (SCL) is a rare medical condition and it is therefore difficult to establish guidelines for treatment, diagnosis and prognosis. Radical orchidectomy with wide local excision of the mass is the recommended therapy, while adjuvant radiotherapy may be considered in intermediate or high-grade tumors and recurrent liposarcomas. The role of chemotherapy is not well-defined.

Combined myxoid liposarcoma and angiolipoma of the spermatic cord

To date, only 14 cases of myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord have been reported in the literature. The growth is a rare, usually highly differentiated malignancy that tends to recur locally, rarely metastasizes, and has a good prognosis following complete removal. We describe a new case of a highly differentiated myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord, combined with an angiolipoma. Left inguinal orchiectomy with high ligation of the cord was performed. Staging revealed no evidence of regional or distal metastases. By the latest visit, at 30 months, the tumor had not recurred. The diagnosis, management, and prognosis of this oncologic entity are discussed in the light of the literature.

Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord: a report of two cases

Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord usually occurs as a painless slow growing scrotal swelling and can present with sudden enlargement of the mass. Recurrences are frequent, owing to incomplete surgical removal of the tumour.

Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord: report of 6 cases and review of the literature

Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is rare. We report 6 cases with followup ranging from 3 months to 23 years from presentation. Initially 4 liposarcomas were well differentiated and 2 had poorly differentiated components. All 6 patients underwent radical orchiectomy and 3 required additional surgical procedures. Although most liposarcomas of the spermatic cord are of low grade and stage, the propensity for local recurrence is high. The importance of long-term followup cannot be overemphasized.

Spermatic cord liposarcoma: ultrasound for diagnosis and follow-up. Case report

A case of spermatic cord liposarcoma is described in a 48-year-old man. Following local excision, the tumour recurred after 3 years, leading to funiculoorchiectomy. The case is presented, the literature reviewed and the role of ultrasound in the diagnosis discussed.

Well-differentiated liposarcoma of the paratesticular area: report of a case with fine-needle aspiration preoperative diagnosis and review of the literature

This article presents a rare case of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the paratesticular area (spermatic cord) with a preoperative cytological diagnosis. A 0.6-mm fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of a paratesticular lump showed many spindle and polygonal atypical cells with numerous cytoplasmic vacuoles. On the basis of a diagnosis of "malignant mesenchymal neoplasia consistent with liposarcoma," the patient underwent radical orchiectomy. A 8 x 7 x 8.5 cm, whitish mass was found, which was histologically classified as a "well-differentiated liposarcoma" (with lipoma-like, sclerosing, and myxoid areas), according to the classification of Enzinger and Weiss. A review of the literature is presented.
