Spectrophotometric study of complexation equilibria with H-point standard addition and H-point curve isolation methods

Study of interaction of metal ions with methylthymol blue by chemometrics and quantum chemical calculations

In this study, we determine the acidity constants of methylthymol blue (MTB) and association constants of its complexes with the ZnII, CuII, and FeII metal ions (MIs), through theoretical and experimental means. The complexes were characterized using UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy combined with soft/hard chemometrics methods and quantum chemical calculations. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that electronic transitions in the UV-Visible spectra of MTB have mixed n → π* and π → π* characters. The results of molar ratio and multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) revealed the formation of successive 1:2 and 1:1 complexes (MI:MTB) for the ZnII and CuII systems. However, the formation of successive 1:1 and 2:1 complexes are suggested for FeII by the molar ratio and MCR-ALS. The majority of transitions observed in the UV-Visible spectra of the Zn(MTB) and Cu(MTB) complexes have ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) characters. However, the transitions in the UV-Visible spectrum of the Fe(MTB) complex have LLCT and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) characters. For the Fe2(MTB) complex, the lowest energy transition of has an LLCT character. However, its higher energy transitions are a mixture of LLCT, MLCT, and metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) characters. The correlation between experimental and computed wavelengths revealed that the 1:1 complexes of ZnII and CuII prefer square pyramidal geometries. However, the FeII complexes always show octahedral geometry.

Chemical speciation of environmentally significant metals with inorganic ligands. Part 5: The Zn2+ + OH–, Cl–, CO32–, SO42–, and PO43– systems (IUPAC Technical Report)

The numerical modeling of ZnII speciation amongst the environmental inorganic ligands Cl–, OH–, CO32–, SO42–, and PO43– requires reliable values for the relevant stability (formation) constants. This paper compiles and provides a critical review of these constants and related thermodynamic data. It recommends values of log10βp,q,r° valid at Im = 0 mol·kg–1 and 25 °C (298.15 K), and reports the empirical reaction ion interaction coefficients, ∆ε, required to calculate log10βp,q,r values at higher ionic strengths using the Brønsted–Guggenheim–Scatchard specific ion interaction theory (SIT). Values for the corresponding reaction enthalpies, ∆rH, are reported where available. There is scope for additional high-quality measurements for the Zn2+ + H+ + CO32– system and for the Zn2+ + OH– and Zn2+ + SO42– systems at I > 0. In acidic and weakly alkaline fresh water systems (pH < 8), in the absence of organic ligands (e.g., humic substances), ZnII speciation is dominated by Zn2+(aq). In this respect, ZnII contrasts with CuII and PbII (the subjects of earlier reviews in this series) for which carbonato- and hydroxido- complex formation become important at pH > 7. The speciation of ZnII is dominated by ZnCO3(aq) only at pH > 8.4. In seawater systems, the speciation at pH = 8.2 is dominated by Zn2+(aq) with ZnCl+, Zn(Cl)2(aq), ZnCO3(aq), and ZnSO4(aq) as minor species. This behaviour contrasts with that for CuII and PbII for which at the pH of seawater in equilibrium with the atmosphere at 25 °C (log10 {[H+]/c°} ≈ 8.2) the MCO3(aq) complex dominates over the MCln(2–n)+ species. The lower stability of the different complexes of ZnII compared with those of CuII, PbII, and CdII is also illustrated by the percentage of uncomplexed M2+ in seawater, which is ca. 55, 3, 2, and 3.3 % of [MII]T, respectively.

Spectrophotometric study of competitive complexation equilibria involving overlapped spectral responding species: Determination of the stability constant of bismuth-pyrophosphate complex

Spectrophotometric study of competitive complex formation equilibria involving overlapped spectral responding species applying a simple and versatile algorithm was carried out. The algorithm involves multivariable regression for calculation of equilibrium concentrations from multiwavelength data and mass action law for the stability constant calculation. The used regression functions are part of common statistical software. Stability constants and complex stoichiometry of competing equilibria were simultaneously determined. The species concentration profiles at several spectral overlapping and α-coefficient of competing reaction were obtained. Non-absorbing bismuth — pyrophosphate (PPh) system was studied as a competitive reaction of bismuth — 4-(2-Pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR) complex. The formation of Bi-PPh complex with 1:1 stoichiometry was proved in the studied concentration region (CBi = 1×10−5 mol L−1; CPPh = 5×10−6 − 1×10−4 mol L−1). The stability constant of the complex at pH 1 and µ = 1.0 have been determined: logβ = 4.2±0.2.

H-point curve isolation method for determination of catechol in complex unknown mixtures

In this work, the combination of H-point curve isolation method (HPCIM) and H-point standard additions method (HPSAM) was used for determination of catechol in the presence of phenolic interferents. Spectrophotometric multivariate calibration data constructed by successive standard additions of an analyte in an unknown matrix was used by the method. A cumulative spectrum for interferents in sample was extracted by HPCIM and then HPSAM is used for determination of the catechol concentration by obtained cumulative interferents spectrum. The method was tested with simulated data set. The spectrum obtained from applying HPCIM to the simulated data well agrees with the cumulative spectra of the interferents. The method was applied to the determination of catechol in the presence of highly overlapping interferents in synthetic ternary mixtures using spectrophotometric data. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully used for determination of catechol in real complicated matrices of tea and urine samples. Percent recoveries were between 95.4 and 113.6.

Simultaneous kinetic determination of levodopa and carbidopa by H-point standard addition method

The kinetic H-point standard addition method (HPSAM) was applied to the simultaneous determination of levodopa and carbidopa. The method was based on the difference in the rate of oxidation of these compounds with Cu(II)-neocuproine system and formation of Cu(I)-neocuproine complex at pH 5.5. The absorbance of the Cu(I)-neocuproine complex was monitored at 453 nm. Experimental conditions such as pH, reagent concentrations, ionic strength and temperature were optimized. Simultaneous determination of levodopa and carbidopa was performed in the range of 0.8-4 and 0.2-1.5 microg ml(-1), respectively. The proposed method was applied to the simultaneous determination of levodopa and carbidopa in pharmaceutical samples, and satisfactory results were obtained.
